LOS ANGELES – A 19-year-old Palmdale man was one of two arrested Friday for the murder of two Chinese graduate students last month near the University of Southern California, according to authorities. Javier Bolden was reportedly arrested around 7:30 p.m. in Palmdale on suspicion of murder. Bryan Barnes, 20, of Los Angeles was arrested three hours earlier. Both men are being held in connection with the double murder of electrical engineering students Ming Qu and Ying Wu from China. Qu and Wu, both 23, were shot to death around 1 a.m. on April 11 as they sat in a BMW about a mile away from the USC campus. Qu reportedly ran from the vehicle to seek help from neighbors before collapsing on the porch of a nearby residence. Wu was reportedly found shot dead in the front passenger seat of the vehicle. Javier and Barnes are not documented gang members but are believed to have gang affiliations, according to Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck. Officials suspect the killings were the result of a street robbery and were part of a string of crimes the two men allegedly committed in Los Angeles. The men are being held without bail and are [...]

PALMDALE – Six-year-old Nathaniel Martinez was on a mission Friday morning. He leaned against the rails, stretched his arms out as far as they would go, and thrust his Palmdale souvenir magazine at every athlete that crossed his path. “Autograph!” he demanded. Martinez was one of hundreds of area residents and cycling fans from around the world who converged on Marie Kerr Park Friday for the rare opportunity to see world class athletes up close and personal at the Amgen Tour of California Stage 6 Start in Palmdale. “It’s a once in a life time thing to see the athletes of the Tour de France,” said Patty Gibson of Lancaster. “I came just to support our local community because this is a really great event that brings everyone from all over the world,” said Palmdale resident Ashley Tapia. “It’s a really great memory to have.” The event also brought massive exposure to the City of Palmdale, said Mayor Jim Ledford. “This is a world class event so we’re getting international exposure, and for our city, that’s the goal,” said Ledford. “It’s to show what we are as a community… We’re not only the home of the space shuttle and the [...]

PALMDALE – Stage 6 of the 2012 Amgen Tour of California kicked off in Palmdale and finished with an intense climb to Big Bear Lake. The cyclists trekked more than 115 miles Friday through the Angeles National Forest, Crestline and Lake Arrowhead, and then onto the Rim of the World Highway. Entering the Big Bear area, the riders took the northern route around Big Bear Lake and then tackled the last ascent to the finish at Snow Summit ski area more than 7,000 feet above sea level. Sylvain Georges (FRA) of AG2R La Mondiale crossed the uphill finish line first, 28 seconds ahead of his nearest rival, Peter Sagan (SVK) of Liquigas-Cannondale. “This is the fifth win of my career – but the biggest win of my life,” said Georges at a post-race press conference. “This is also my biggest win with the biggest team I’ve been a part of. I thought I’d tempt fate on the second KOM because I knew I had the legs, and from that point on, it was all or nothing. I held it in my head and was able to hold it until the end.” STAGE 6 TOP THREE First – Sylvain Georges (FRA), [...]

LANCASTER – Family members of former Army Sergeant Nathen Taylor pleaded with the community Thursday morning to come forth with any information regarding Nathen’s murder. As an incentive, County Supervisor Michael Antonovich proposed a $20,000 reward in exchange for information leading to the capture of those involved. “I really hope this reward will get people to come forward,” said Tiffany Tillman, Nathen’s fiance. “You would be surprised with what small amount of information would help. I ask you to please please come forward…we’re not going to be able to rest until justice is served, so we beg you whoever might know something or who saw something, please come forward. Please help us.” Nathen Taylor was shot and killed in front of his brother’s home at 733 West Avenue H-7 in Lancaster. The sheriff’s department is still investigating the shooting. “More than anything we just need to have whoever did this behind bars,” said Kinnzie Taylor, Nathen’s sister. “My brother, the way he was killed, everyone should take it personal…that could be your father, that could be your brother, your son. So everyone should take it personal and everyone should try their best to get involved.” She added that she’s not sure [...]

LANCASTER – The criminal case has been dropped against a 63-year-old woman whose son was beaten by Lancaster deputies at Antelope Valley Hospital last year. Maria Chiclana had been charged with resisting an officer for her role in a violent altercation between her son, Marco Chiclana, and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies. The fight was caught on tape April 2, 2011 (view the video below). Marco Chiclana, 35, called deputies to the hospital to assist him with his father, Damaso Chiclana, who was disoriented after surgery and trying to leave the hospital against doctors’ wishes. For reasons unclear by the parking lot security footage, Marco ended up in fight with six deputies in the hospital parking lot. Marco, Maria, Damaso, and friend, Ibarra Deleon, were all arrested in connection with the incident. Deputies claim Marco was the aggressor in the scuffle. Marco was charged with eight felony counts, including resisting arrest, battery on an officer and mayhem. Damaso, Maria and Ibarra were each charged with felony resisting an officer. Damaso’s and Ibarra’s cases were dismissed last year. Maria’s charge was reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor during her preliminary hearing, according to her defense attorney Bradley Gage, who took [...]

PALMDALE – The Coffins of Little Hope by Timothy Schaffert is the Palmdale City Library’s Featured Book of the Month for May. When a young country girl is reported to be missing, perhaps whisked away by an itinerant aerial photographer, Essie stumbles onto the story of her life. Or, perhaps it is simply a hoax, or a delusion: the child and child-thief invented from the desperate imagination of a lonely, lovelorn woman. Either way, the story of the girl reaches far and wide, igniting controversy, attracting curiosity seekers and cult worshippers from all over the country to a dying rural town. Schaffert is the author of four novels: The Coffins of Little Hope, Devils in the Sugar Shop, The Singing and Dancing Daughters of God and The Phantom Limbs of the Rollow Sisters (the Nebraska Book Award). He teaches in the English Department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The Coffins of Little Hope is available for check out from the Palmdale City Library. For further information on the Featured Book of the Month, contact the Palmdale City Library at 661-267-5600 or visit www.cityofpalmdale.org/library. -
