LANCASTER – Council member Sherry Marquez submitted her resignation to city officials Tuesday. Marquez is reportedly stepping down to care for her ailing mother. Her resignation will be accepted by the City Council at its September 13th meeting. Marquez was elected to the Lancaster City Council in April 2008. Her resignation comes seven months before her term was scheduled to expire in April 2012.

If Sherry’s mother is terminal, there may be an estate to consider. I know that’s tacky but with people like Marquez, you automatically think the worst.
William says
I forgot to add that it’s perfectly appropriate for her to go back and care for her mother and handle any estate issues. But, that may be an element of the story that is being left out if it’s so. I have a friend who is, frankly, quit greedy about ‘stuff’. When her brother died a while back, she took off a month to travel out-of-state to handle his affairs after he died. She had little good to say about him and they weren’t close but, the gettin’ was good as he had some financial worth. I guess it helped with her ‘grieving’ process.

Hatered and bigotry are what Lancaster is all about.

Andrew:
Bigotry and hatred is the theme of Lancaster.
James P. Biddle says
Sherry has only 7 months left on her term. They could just leave the seat vacant and let the people decide. But we all know that’s not how Rex rolls. He will appoint an insider to fill the vacancy. Once in, come election time that person runs as an incumbent.
Let’s see, who might be in line for the appointment: Jim Vose, Scott Erlich, Randy Hall,Dan Jacobs,April Bartlett,or Kit Yee Szeto. There’s probably other insiders whose names don’t come to mind right now.
But, you know it will be an insider.
Scott Pelka says
I would suggest Darren Parker or Johnathan Ervin. But that would happen when hell freezes over.
William says
I wonder if Rex will appoint one of his employees. Got to keep unanimous votes going on everything.
Jo says
Nice sentiments Andrew, but rex was expecting her resignation back in June, when he announced he would do the appointing for any vacancy on the city council. So I’m not expecting anyone who “who is truly fair, with no hostility towards any group, who can hold their own against the extreme conservative forces running this community.”
Andrew Pari, L.C.S.W. says
This is quite a surprise. I’m sorry for her reasons and wish her and her mother well personally. Politically, this is a very good thing for the city. She openly expressed such hatred and bigotry towards a variety of citizen groups in the Antelope Valley that I often wondered how she became elected at all. Just reading her daily Twitter feed was stomach-turning and I was shocked at how vitriolic she was with no one calling for her resignation.
We need someone in her place who is truly fair, with no hostility towards any group, who can hold their own against the extreme conservative forces running this community.
