UPDATED: 7-year-old dies in backyard accident

A 7-year-old child was found hanging from a tree in the backyard of a Lancaster home Friday. The incident was reported around 7 p.m. and appears to have been accidental. Photo Credit: LUIS MEZA

LANCASTER – Detectives Friday night were still investigating the death of a 7-year-old boy in Lancaster, and little details were immediately available.

Around 6 p.m., the youngster was found hanging from a tree in his backyard in the 1000 Block of Angela Court in East Lancaster, according to authorities.

The boy was transported by ambulance with a deputy escort to Antelope Valley Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The youngster had been playing in the tree when the apparent freak accident occurred, officials said.

We will have more information on this incident as it becomes available.

UPDATED 6/16/12 @ 8:35 p.m.

The Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau has just issued a news release with more information about this tragic accident. According to the news release:

Detectives learned that the boy was last seen playing basketball by himself in the backyard of his home in the 1000 block of Angela Court.

At approximately 6:15 p.m., a family member went to the backyard and found the boy hanging from the lower branch of a tree by a martial arts belt that was wrapped around the branch.

Family members summoned emergency assistance and the boy was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives are investigating the boy’s death as accidental. The Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death.

    • My prayers are with you. Our son’s were in the same class and got their hair cuts at the same place. I am beyond heartbroke. I pray for your healing. He’s was the cutest little boy with all the fly haircuts. Especially his mohawk. :) Rest in peace Aaris!!

    • Aaris was in my classroom every day for reading (a half an hour each day to help students improve reading skills) and he was so well behaved and really improved his reading scores! I was shocked and horrified when I found out. Would like help in any way. Please email me rowdycynthia@att.net so I can let my teaching partner who was his reading teacher know too.

  4. I just watched KTLA news and it is who I thought. Aaris was in my son’s class for kindergarden and 1st grade at Jack Northropp. They also both got their haircut at the same place as well. I would often talk to his mom. She loved having 2 boys but was so excitied to have a little girl. My heart is way to broken right now. And now I wonder do I tell my 7 yr old son or do I not. Also I think my son and him went to the same barber in the lancaster swapmeet. Please tell me this isnt him!! My heart ached for this family :(

  7. This is unreal I remember sitting on Aaris gramdmother couch a women I love dearly talking to Aaris and his brother Aaron about girl friends and we all laughed. To hear that hes gone is unreal. A family that I love as if they where my own to see the youngest grand baby of Ms. Davis gone is harder than death it self. My love and prayers go out to there family. God has a plan just be patient.

    Ruth and I are very sad for your loss. I just heard from another parent from our baseball team and our hearts go out to you. Aaris was a wonderful and great kid to coach this year! I picked him up at his home numerous times and took him to practice and he was so very respectful and Nate and him would play and goof around in the the back seat. He became a great little baseball player at the end of the year and he will be missed by Nathan and family.

  11. Aaris is the youngest fallen soldier in our family..my heart has been heavy every since i heard about my great nephew..handsome, respectable quite young guy. I NEVER could imagine burying a child of mine and especially as young as Aaris. All i can say at this moment is Cameron I love you …today is Father’s day but there is nothing happy about it when your child cant tell you Happy Father’s day from this point on. Evelyn my heart goes out to u especially ..U are his mother.
    Stay strong u have other kids that need u as well. My Prayers are with You. And my sis Brenda whom is Aaris’s grandmother i know that u r crying your heart out and it wont b the same w/o Aaris and u stay strong as well. Trust me ..i know its easier said then done.

  14. I just saw the KCAL 9 news story on tv. I can almost guarantee you the mom murdered him. She could barely keep a smile off of her face during the interview. He was playing basketball, what would he need a karate belt for? That wouldn’t even make sense, considering how much that would hinder his movement. Let’s say he was wearing a karate belt, and let’s say that he climbed a tree while wearing it, even though he was seven years old and the general consensus seems to be that the tree was rather big, how would a belt tied around the waste slide all the way to the neck and proceed to tighten itself, especially considering a karate belt is generally tied in a way that prevents sliding of the knot. It doesn’t add up.

He will be playing basket ball one minute and in the blink of an eye he will be standing out side with his friends insisting that they see his new moves. I have seen this before, this type of thing unfortunately it is very common. I know that it is hard mam for you to see such horrible accusations about you and your family.

          I don’t believe she would harm her son. You shouldn’t say such things unless you know for sure. If she didn’t hurt her child, I know as a mother. Just being apart from them for 12hrs can seem like 10 days. You should shut your mouth because you could be so wrong and words alone can break even the strongest of hearts when love is involved. It is foolish to whip your tongue so carelessly. If you can’t control it you should bite it off your self. If this child fell on accident would he want his mother to be spoken to in this way.

          Mam, my condolences to you and your family for such a great loss. I and many people I know are morning with you. Please for give those that think they know, because they have no idea. You are not alone reach out and he will catch you. Life is so fragile so temporary, we a praying for your strength to walk through this. My heart cries out for you as does so many others.

        • How dare you saw look at the facts when there were none. Have you ever played in a tree as a kid. Probably not you just came out your mothers womb as an adult. We have no clue how he got in the tree we can only assume he was standing on his basketball to get there . But that is still an assumption. Children will be children they enjoy playing outside and climbing trees. I climbed a many and so did my ten brothers. His mother who you dont know would give her life for any one of her children. She is the most caring person I know. She is the type of mother who is involved in her kids life 24/7 . This was a horrible accident and we lost a ray of sunshine. You low-life piece of crap you have no clue what this family is going through. The mother is trying to be strong for her other children while the pain which we can not imagine is torturing her daily. The police did investigate and corner . It was a tragic accident just like a child accidentally falling in a pool. Why dont you do some research most accidents that happen at home are children and seniors. Before you open your mouth to make a opioion that no one wants to hear or see. FYI his mother would never harm her babies because she is a good christian woman who loves all kids and if you knew her you would know that a million and one kids love her because she is like the soccer mom who comes and takes all the kids to amusement parks, games, or interactive fun events. Her son Aaris loved his mother thay had a very close and loving relationship. Aaris was a very gentle quite child who never caused a problem . He was well mannered and sweet. Loosing him was like loosing herself. So watch your mouth she is about to bury a part of herself something you can never comprehend.

  15. I have to say that this is very Sad. However what makes this worse is the Fact that Heavy set man along with his son/brother was shooting a small video camera infront of the House. They made this event even worse. I feel sorry for the Family in times such as this. I am not sure why they were doing this, One was doing Video, and the other was taking Pictures… If you are the Media, Then you have to take some lessons in being nice to others, and not act like a idiots !

    • In fact this is my little cousin and I’m so sad to hear this tragical accident but what I’m wondering is how my little cousin got in the tree he’s to small to get up there and can you please find someone to investagate who were the people vidoe tapping this because they might have some part in this investigation.   20. How sad, what a tragedy. That poor baby, same thing happened to the daughter of a class mate. She was playing with a jump rope on the stairs of the apartment or the little boy that was taking his dog for a walk and was hung by the dog leash on his stairs. We can watch our children but as any parent knows kids will be kids. Bad things happen it’s no one fault. I can’t imagine what his Mom and Dad are feeling. I don’t understand why people feel they need to criticize others… Really, like your so perfect or something.

This was a sweet little boy, a dear friend to my daughter, and a very well liked little boy on our street, always there with a smile and a wave Hello, I cannot imagine their loss, I have children of my own and would be inconsolable, I just hope the press can sympathize and let them greeve in peace.

My heart goes out to them and I hope they are able to find some comfort and strength somehow in this very horrible and tragic event.

    wow the picture is creeping me out because on the branch of the tree closest to the deputy closest to the street and right next to the trunk it looks like a little demon person sitting there watching things. I mean i know that it is in reality the shingles from the roof of the house but I still dont like the pic. It scares me. I guess I get a little superstitious when it hits so close to home like this one. I hope th family is able to find the strength and whatever it takes to get thru this.
