PALMDALE – Palmdale resident and avid recycler Regina Vital was the first person in 2012 to be caught “green handed” by City of Palmdale officials at the first Thursday Night at the Square (TNOTS) event at Poncitlán Square in Palmdale.
Vital, a 19-year resident of Palmdale, was presented with a free solar-powered backpack valued at $125 and capable of charging a laptop, cell phone, camera or MP3 player, courtesy of Waste Management.
“Regina has been trying to win the backpack every week at TNOTS since we began the ‘Recycling Rocks’ program with Waste Management three years ago,” said Palmdale’s Sponsorship and Marketing Specialist Stella Knight. “This promotion is to help get the word out on the importance of recycling. We caught Regina separating her trash from her recyclables, putting each in its proper container, and for her efforts she won a great solar backpack .”
“If we catch you ‘greenhanded’ this week at TNOTS, you may be our next winner!” said Knight.
TNOTS events begin at 5:30 pm and end at 9 pm in Poncitlán Square on July 12, July 19, July 26, August 2, August 9, August 16 and August 22. Families can come enjoy live music, enticing food, free City activities for kids and an open-air market featuring specialty items.
The theme for July 12 is a “Summer Down Under,” a tribute to Australia. Kids can enjoy making their own rain stick, a personalized painted boomerang and a cute Koala wall pouch. Oldies music will be provided by The Legends.
Weekly free entertainment and activities include:
- Live music in the gazebo until 8:30 pm, sponsored by Valleywide Dental
- The Game Garden featuring a variety of board games for all ages
- The Children’s Art & Activity Center, open while supplies last
- Camp TNOTS, sponsored by High Desert Medical Group, featuring storytelling at 6:30 pm, impromptu and interactive activities, song and dance, easel art and origami, and, back by popular demand, the bubble garden.
The Children’s Art & Activity Center and Camp TNOTS are for children age 12 and under.
Pets are not permitted. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Alcohol is not allowed.
This year’s sponsors include Double D Cupcakes, Energy Upgrade California, High Desert Broadcasting, High Desert Medical Group, Sierra Medical Group, Target, Valleywide Dental and Waste Management.
In addition to TNOTS, the City will celebrate its 50th anniversary of incorporation on Friday, August 24 at Poncitlan Square from 5:30-8:30 pm. This special evening will include fun, food and music.

The article didn’t say she was “19 years old”. It said she was a “19 year resident”.
John Mlynar says
19 year resident is correct.
Rob says
That picture is not of a 19 year old girl. That must be her mother.
