LANCASTER – Do you own a smartphone? If so, you may be a target for thieves, according to local law enforcement.
The rise of “street robberies” involving smartphones has prompted the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station to issue the following Community Advisory:
Lancaster Sheriff’s Station has seen a marked increase in “Street Robberies” that involve the theft of cell phones.
During the recent interview of a robbery suspect, the suspect told the detective that “smart phones are a sure thing. “
Cell phones are “high dollar” items that are easily sold, pawned or traded for drugs by the suspects.
Many of the victims have been young adults or teenagers. We would like to remind everyone to be aware of their surroundings while using their phones and encourage parents to talk to their children about the risks of using their phones while in a public place.
Here are a few simple steps you can take to limit your risk of becoming a victim.
- Keep your phone out of public view when not in use.
- If you must use your phone, use a hands free device and always be aware of your surroundings while talking or texting.
- Avoid loud conversations that draw the attention of people around you.
- Remember, don’t be a dummy with a smart phone.
With everyone’s help we can reduce the number of these types of crimes.
