LANCASTER – Child Care Resource Center (CCRC) and the Lancaster JetHawks invite children of all ages, child care professionals, businesses, schools, and community organizations to participate in the third annual Laps 4 Literacy event, which takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the JetHawks Stadium.
“This campaign brings an awareness of illiteracy,” said CCRC Vice President Ellen Cervantes.
The Antelope Valley community event will feature a variety of activities, including:
- A 5k walk/run,
- Kids Fun Run,
- Book drive,
- Story time,
- Music performances,
- Face painting,
- Hands-on science, art and music activities,
- Arts & crafts,
- Goody bags,
- Raffle prizes, and
- A car show featuring AV Corvette Club.
The event will also include 25 vendor booths that showcase community organizations that promote literacy. This year, Laps 4 Literacy is sponsored by DeVry University, Charter College, and the city of Lancaster.
“We have been blessed with so many things and so many gifts that often times we don’t realize those of us that do not have access to that book, do not have access to that book store and for sure don’t have access to a Kindle,” said Lancaster Deputy City Manager Jason Caudle. “Programs like these obviously provide those opportunities.”
Participants are asked to donate new or gently used children’s books, and every child at the event will receive a book, organizers said.
“Let’s get books in everybody’s hands, let’s build an amazing future,” said Mina Creswell of Charter College.
The event kicks off at 9 a.m. with the 5K Walk/Run/Stroll, which will be followed by the Kids Fun Run and pictures with JetHawks mascot KaBoom at 10 a.m.
The free family play day and car show will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information on this event, visit www.ccrcla.org.

Great place for them to get together and network the daycare scams and fraud.
I wonder if there will be a booth to report fraud. Probably not, they don’t really want to know.
