LANCASTER – During Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Jibraun Asaad, a senior at Quartz Hill High School, was honored with the Mayor’s Athlete of the Month Award for December.
Asaad, the football team captain at Quartz Hill and starting right-fielder for the baseball team, was praised by the Mayor for both his athletic achievements and those in the classroom.
“Jibraun demonstrates that he is the embodiment of a scholar-athlete,” Mayor R. Rex Parris said. “His prowess on the field, his stellar academic success, and his consistent willingness to serve his peers make him worthy of recognition.”
Assad led his varsity high school football team to the playoffs for two consecutive years, steering his team to a second place finish in the Golden League.
In doing so, Asaad has passed for 529 yards and four touchdowns as quarterback. In baseball his batting average has been a consistent .300 with an on base percentage of .462 and 13 runs.
Assad is active in tutoring his classmates, and assists with preparing them for upcoming SAT and ACT tests. He also volunteers with the YMCA, coaching youth basketball, refereeing and scorekeeping.
Asaad holds a 4.6 GPA, and is the valedictorian of his high school class.
While Cornell, Harvard, San Jose State, and UC San Diego have all expressed interest in Asaad, he plans to study Mechanical Engineering at the United States Air Force Academy.

Also, if there is an “Athlete of the Month” shouldn’t there be also a:
– City employee of the month
– Sheriff Deputy of the month
– Outstanding person of the month
an award for anyone who did something outstanding for the community each month.

I’m wondering why all the comments seem to question the Mayor’s motive here.
There is a Saber Award for city employees or first responders, and public can vote on line.
I have seen the Mayor give recognition to Athletes at City Council Meetings. This is nothing new.
Congratulations to this young man. It’s good that he is maintaining his grades while being outstanding in sports.
Good luck in the Air Force.

I was wondering who the other athletes are for the months not mentioned.

Are you thinking “tokenism “like I am.Part of the AV repubs attempt to change their image?

Instead of a what sounds like a negative remark, why not recognize the student for his accomplishments? Congratulations, Jibraun, well done.
