Drug house raided across street from elementary school

A mother and son were arrested Wednesday morning after deputies found meth, heroin, and a sophisticated surveillance system in their home, which is directly across the street from Valley View Elementary School.

LANCASTER – A 70-year-old woman and her son were busted Wednesday morning for keeping a drug house across the street from a Lancaster elementary school, authorities said.

Katherine Hales and 43-year-old Daniel Hales were arrested after deputies found methamphetamine, tar heroin and several bottles of assorted prescription drugs at the duo’s home in the 3200 block of W Avenue L-8, according to Lancaster Station Community Relations deputy Michael Rust.

The home, which is located directly across the street from Valley View Elementary School, had been the source of several complaints regarding drug sales in the area.

The home was being protected by a sophisticated surveillance system, consisting of mounted cameras connected to several laptops. (LASD)

Deputies from Lancaster Station’s LANCAP team served a search warrant on the home Wednesday morning and found illegal drugs and a sophisticated surveillance system protecting the home, Rust said.

Several security cameras mounted to the outside of the house were linked to multiple laptop computers found in different rooms inside the home, Rust said.

Katherine Hales was arrested on narcotics-related charges, including maintaining a home for drug use. She was booked at the Lancaster Station on $30,000 bail.

Daniel Hales was arrested for selling drugs in a school zone and other narcotics charges and booked on $30,000 bail.

A 17-year-old girl found inside the home was also arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance. The underage female was released to the custody of her parent.

    • We were unable to get an update before the courthouse closed today (Dec. 21). However, according to LASD inmate records it appears that Daniel Hales pleaded not guilty, and his bail was raised to $313,000. He remains in custody and is due back in court on Jan. 4, 2013.

      Katherine Hales was released from custody on Dec. 20 at 4:45 p.m., according to inmate records. Her court date was set for today, but we do not know the outcome.

      We will update the story once we get more information from the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office.

    • He didn’t talk. But not because he couldn’t but because he doesn’t know the latest. He’s out of the loop. He opened his mouth about the wrong people. Got dealt with so to say and had no one basically reached a drought. So he went to the younger college and high school aged, ones who hadn’t tried it before. They busted in during the day because that’s when they’re at home sleeping. I apologize in their behalf for the children and their parents but do know NO activity was done during the day reason why the house was loaded up and there was only three people there. He is getting charged because he has no one else to turn in. But let’s see how much evidence his buddy the watch commander at lancaster station gets rid of… Like always.

My children and all the others at Valley View who where so scared some even crying during the lock down the school was under when the arrested these pillars of the community. So go ahead and talk about this poor woman who I had no doubt is being pushed around by her POS son and forget all about the kids who had this scare not even a week after what happened in Connecticut

        • I agree that any drug house is fair pickens for the cops. I wish more were busted. That being said, there are 24 hrs in a day and they could have picked a better time of day so it didn’t tramatize the students. I don’t have any kids at that school so it didn’t affect anyone I know. We hear about parole and probation or sex offender checks being done in the wee hours, why couldn’t they have done it then?
          As far as “shame on them” for being bad influences on someone and being the reason some other kid did drugs… I wonder where your parents were? What kind of parents don’t know where their kid is at all times. Absentee parents, that’s who. Parents need to keep a closer eye on their kids and stop trying to be their friends. Anything in your kids room is yours and you have the right to look in it. Blah blah.

    • Wouldn’t it have been terrible if the guy in the house started a shoot out with the cops with all the kids in school. What if he was using a weapon that went thru walls? Maybe they should rethink their timing for the safety of the children.

          • No I didn’t go back. I got a restraining order, moved into sober living, and went to rehab. Now I’m clean and have been for over a year. Reason why I wasn’t there. I can’t hold his hand, I have to protect my kids. There came a point where I cleaned up and he went his own path.

Cara I think it’s depressing that she fell victim to Danny’s evil sceams. When I met Danny and when I married him he was clean and doing great and was a bomb ass awesome dad. All of you little dope thirsty girls turned him out and created this monster. Cara I feel for Mom, even though she knew her and I tried numerous times to get him help. The drugs turn people into something else. I pray he wakes up and this tragedy can save his life. I pray that she can finally get away from him and his control and regain a normal life.       Wylda Rose knows what’s going on because she has known them for a long time. I suspect if people could have others arrested and jailed for “knowing” something illegal is going on in their home, someone would have put you in jail a log time ago.
      She is commenting that things are not always as they look to outsiders. You of all people should know that.
      Intimidation by a family member or caregiver is very real. That’s why so many agencies have senior citizens sign statements asking about their well being. Dr. office, pharmacy, etc.
      Maybe you, or your family and friends would go to Jerry Springer to air your dirty laundry. From all her posts, I don’t think she is in that gene pool!

  10. This will be my last post: In a perfect world Danny will spend the rest of his life in jail. Kathy will get therapy and get to live the rest of her life Danny free. This won’t happen, but I can have hope.

  11. Wow! So THIS is where they get the scripts for the reality television shows! Seriously, it seems that on this posting the old woman has a cheering section that say she was beaten/blackmailed/abused into doing what her felon son did so leave her alone. Okay. I can kind of see that, it happens. What I CAN’T fathom is how she would let an underage girl be at her house under the influence of drugs. That illustrates a level of sickness that no one can explain away. Take her away and let the legal system correct this twisted family.

    • The “old woman” worked a full time job and then some to pay the rent. She wasn’t at her home much. She made a HUGE, EPIC mistake in letting her loser son move in with her. But she is his mom and he is her youngest. I know this is going to sound like an excuse, but I honestly think she may not have known about the underage girl (if there actually was one). And let’s face it, 17 year olds out here often have 2 or 3 kids, work as strippers and are not nearly as innocent as you would like to think.
      And I’m the cheering section…one person who knows a whole heck of a lot more about this situation than the papers, the police and some of the other people commenting do.

            Girls get into that business for lots of reasons. One being, they had a Father who did not pay attention to them or was so strict and rigid she felt she could never do anything to please him or get his approval. He was more concerned about how other people saw her than how she felt. It was all about how everything looks to the “neighbors” or his co-workers. God forbid, she did something to embarrass him. so….what better revenge could she have? Be a stripper. :)

      • Totally agree about the teenage girl. Teenage girls are NOT what they used to be. 14 is the new 18. The law just hasn’t caught up with the girls. Just like other with juvenile crime,s their age works for them and against anyone who fools around with them as minors. They can be charged as adults for committing adult crimes, but not mistaken for adults or treated like adults outside of the court system.
        I see how that could happen to the Mother. If he is the manipulating, abusive guy you are saying, she probably was afraid of him and at the same time identified with him as her son and could not turn him in.
        It has been said by a more than afew of the people on this blog, the cops are not here to protect peopl. They are here to clean up after a crime has been committed. You are suppose to protect yourself.
        I understand that no matter what you told the cops about this guy, unless he was breaking the law when they/if they came, they wouldn’t arrest him. Once he was in the house she couldn’t force him out without going to court to evict him.
        I feel bad for her. I hope she is out of jail and home safe. Also hope she didn’t lose her job over this. As long as I’m throwing my hope into the wind, I hope he is back in jail. That $30K bail had to be a mistake.

  13. AV Times: Next time you decide to destroy and/or humiliate someone, get your facts straight. There were NO drugs recovered at the house and there were NO drugs on Kathy. Danny is a career, repeat felon and he wasn’t even at the house at the time, he was already in jail from the day before. Kathy is being held for aiding and abetting because she let her loser son live with her. She has never been arrested or been in any kind of trouble. It was admittedly a very poor choice to let her son live with her but she’s a mom and was hoping she could help him. She has been abused and terrorized by him for years, this damages a person in ways most of us can’t understand. Making her look like some granny drug king pin so your story is more sensational is not only reprehensible but down right wrong and evil. You should be ashamed of yourselves for stooping so low. Whatever happened to journalistic integrity? You’re almost as bad as the vulture reporters who were interviewing Sandy Hook children who had just barely gotten away with their lives. SHAME ON YOU.
    And for all you self righteous haters, the above information is directly from a deputy who was at the scene. Also, the 17 year old is a fabrication according to my source to make the story sound oh so much more horrible.

      If she had alerted authorities to her son’s behavior, things would have been different. But she became a criminal the second she turned a blind eye to the drugs in her home. And across the street from a grade school too. Shame on her!! And SHAME ON YOU for defending her! smh…

      • I spoke to a deputy who was there regardless of the link. And yes, she was wrong to enable her son. But many of the people who are commenting here have no idea what the real story is. It’s easy to get up on your high horse and judge another person. It’s so nice to know that there are so many people here in the AV who have never done anything wrong in their lives.           • She had a restraining order several years ago, he walked right thru it and threatened to kill her. Know what happened??? a couple of days in jail and a stern warning to not do it again.
            And the scooter trash thing is just stupid, no one in this family has ever owned a bike or has ridden one.

          • She works her ass off to keep a roof over her head. Not a sec8 recipient as far as I know. Back in the day, she and her husband owned the largest and most successful auto body place in the AV. They were pillars of the community and everyone took their cars there to be fixed. Then he lost his mind and left her for a gold digging bitch and her life has been in a down hill slide ever since but she’s not white trash and she’s not a drug dealer. She’s doing the best she can and would have been a lot better off if someone had had the balls to get rid of her son. Period. The End.

      • Calling me a liar is not going to change the facts AS I WAS TOLD THEM. Also, I’ve known the family for over 25 years and I’ve seen a different side from a lot of people have seen. From what I saw, Danny’s women, and there were a lot of them, chose to go back to him again and again no matter what he did to them. Not one of those women thought about how he probably did the same things to his mom, the threatening and terrorizing. This breaks a person over time (not to mention what her ex put her through). I’m not saying she’s a angel and that she hasn’t made colossal mistakes but Danny is the real problem here, he’s been an evil POS since he was a little boy. He belongs in prison but for what ever reason that will never happen. This valley is full of some screwed up people and a lot of them are in positions of authority. It’s sad really.

While at the sheriffs station the deputys took me in the back and were helping me call shelters to go to.. and telling me no one can do this to me and not be arrested..but another deputy came in and took the one helping me down the hall, when he returned the deputy told me i had to leave and use the pay phone outside..wtf?

  16. Any one here ever heard of a “bad seed”? Sometimes the best people can end up with the most awful offspring. I know this family and Danny is indeed a world class, evil POS. In fact, if I saw him on the street, I would be VERY tempted to run him over and back up over him. Kathy is a super nice Christian woman who is trapped in a horrible situation with a son who terrifies her and has threatened to kill her many times. The police haven’t helped her, APS hasn’t helped her. The court system has failed Kathy, big surprise (Casey Anthony any one?) Had Danny been my kid I would have smothered him as a child, he was a rotten little sh** even then but Kathy did the best she could with what she had (because from what I understand, that’s what Christians do). Bottom line here, if you haven’t walked in her shoes, STFU.

      • Pretty much missed my point….his rap sheet is 60+ pages long, he’s in and out in no time for what ever the reason. THE COURTS FAILED HERE AGAIN AND AGAIN. As did the police and APS.   26. They were also performing a search in Quartz Hill proper this morning when I was leaving for work. Also across from a school, but that search may have not resulted in finding any illegal activity..
