LANCASTER- The city of Lancaster’s Department of Public Works recently received an award from the High Desert branch of the American Public Works Association (APWA) for “Best Environmental Project of 2012”, for the City’s new 24 Hour Recycling Center.
“We are honored by this recognition of our efforts and will continue to make Lancaster a city known for taking pride in its ecological stewardship,” said Mayor R. Rex Parris.
The APWA’s Awards Program recognizes outstanding individuals, groups, and chapters representing the best in the public works profession.
The City’s 24 Hour Recycling Center was selected as the recipient of the “Best Environmental Project” due to the direct impact it has made on reducing illegal dumping throughout the Antelope Valley.
The 24 Hour Recycling Center was constructed by the Department of Public Works as the City’s first permanent recycling center to provide a free location for disposal of common illegally dumped materials.
In the past 10 months, the center has conducted several successful collection events, which have recycled more than 258,000 pounds of electronic waste and 8,700 gallons of used motor oil. Currently, the recycling center receives over 6,000 pounds of electronic waste a week, which includes electrical devices such as phones, fax machines, televisions, monitors, fans, lamps, vacuums, computers, and even toys. The center also accepts all forms of oil based automotive products, such as motor oil, gear oil, hydraulic oil, and transmission fluid.
This project has saved the citizens of Lancaster thousands of dollars a year by reducing illegal dumping disposal costs.
“We as a City must continue to do our part to protect and preserve our land, and we will continue to strive for excellence in this field,” concluded Parris.

Would you? says
No! They are toxic waste, hurt the environment and leave a stench that lasts for 4 years.
Take our council, please. says
Does the recycling center accept local politicians?
William says
Yes. Yes it does. I suppose they might deposit Ron Smith there.

This is VERY good for me to see, as a local computer shop owner. We here at AV Computer Doctor ( http://www.avcd.us/ ) use K7 eWaste, another local eWaste company, who has been doing their best to save the world too. Check out there site: http://www.california-ewaste-recycling.com/
John Howard says
Wow, you know you could have just emailed the editors and asked them to do an article about your business… This is like putting flyers under the wiper blade of a car in the parking lot… Or as bad as leaving political ads up around town pushing two months after the election.
Meki says
Not true John.
Casey owns AV Computer Doctor, which deals with a ton of Ewaste products. She commented about 7k Ewaste which is an E waste collection service – which I did their website earlier this month (and as you will notice I mentioned before.)
Unlike troll posters, both Casey and I offered links, information and opinion so that people can see that it’s not spam – and comes from a valuable position that might offer a great opinion that should be listened to. In fact, Casey’s post is a validation of the Lancaster recycling center – and people who provide ewaste recycling. Which – sadly – I truly believe is a very big problem that the world is refusing to open it’s eyes to.
Casey is a responsible computer repair shop and 7kewaste is a conscientious collector. BOTH are very concerned about the environment and the impact their businesses have on the world.
To me that sounds like excellent opinion or commentary when the subject matter is about recycling – and winning awards and being a part of this community. Don’t you?
The Anti-REX says
OK I need to comment on this one.
She is not very good at what she does. I have been called by many of her previous customers to clean up her mess. No she does not walk on water!
You should have seen the mess she left behind after her dad was killed. She went into his business and took only the good items and left behind 100+ computers and stuck the cleanup cost with the landlord. I don’t think she is very concerned about the environment and the impact their businesses have on the world
Stick to your free ads in Craigslist because its NOT wanted here!
Frank Rizzo says
Just throw it away in the trash, it all ensd up in the same place, a land fill.

Computer shop makes electronic waste, story on same. John Howard is rude, op is in right.

Having just completed the new website for 7K eWaste Solutions:
http://www.california-ewaste-recycling.com
I have learned so much about the IMPACT of eWaste – that it astounded me. 7K eWaste is an eWaste collection company that picks up eWaste from hospitals, schools, govt. offices, businesses and even residential customers from across the state. I used to think that these kinds of businesses were just fly by night operations – and just to make money.
Then I had to do the research about it – and work closely with them to understand what it was all about. I was surprised at how uneducated I — and most of the world is about e waste products.
They have a family of 8 – and the whole family has gotten involved.. Yes – it’s a business – however —- they do it because they REALLY CARE about the world – and making a difference. Until very recently – I learned that a lot of America’s electronic waste has been shipped to lower class and economy countries – where the waste just fills up land – and the chemicals leach into the ground – and groundwater – making it hazardous…
But Americans don’t see that – or think about that when they get their new upgraded computer or the newest technology in televisions, computers, stereos or cell phones. They don’t think about what happens when those things are just thrown away. We live in a disposable society – that doesn’t care about the future. Which is why 7K eWaste is completely different. They are choosing to help educate people – and help in the process. Instead of just throwing electronic trash away – they go and collect it – saving people the time – and giving them incentive to actually do something to save the land, environment and help in some small way to recycle the metals, chemicals, etc. in the best fashion.
They’re small right now… But with their commitment, professionalism and the family backing them with a different way to do business and the will to help educate people about this major issue (which most Americans don’t even acknowledge or think about) I believe they will become a larger company soon.
If I hadn’t done this site – I wouldn’t have appreciated this article about ewaste recycling — because now – I actually understand that is an issue that actually AFFECTS the world – and the future or our planet… I wish this center the best of luck – and hope they win tons more awards!
Dave says
ALL these awards and no place to display them. Lancaster needs a new city hall befiting the stature and great success of our mayor and council. We can use the old city hall to store and display all of our well earned awards. Let’s never be critical of these awards as they helped make Lancaster the wonderful and safe community where we all live in peace and harmony.

It would be nice if Palmdale had a similar sort of recycling center. Although some say the entire East side of Palmdale is a dump, but I digress.
sikntired says
how difficult is it to drive up to waste management, they have ewaste disposal.
