PALMDALE – A portion of Palmdale Boulevard was closed for about three hours Thursday afternoon as authorities responded to a pile-up involving at least five vehicles.
No major injuries were reported, according to deputies at the scene.
The incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. in the westbound lanes of Palmdale Boulevard, between 25th and 22nd Street East.
A GMC Sierra pick-up truck was towing a U-Haul trailer when the trailer detached from the pickup truck, stopping traffic, according to deputies at the scene.
Among the vehicles stopped were a Nissan Altima, a blue Ford Focus and a white Saturn.
A Ford F150 pick-up truck towing a horse trailer approached the scene at a high rate of speed and did not brake for the stopped vehicles, according to witnesses.
The Ford pick-up truck slammed into the back of the Ford Focus, sending it into the back of the Nissan Altima, sending the Altima into the back of the Saturn, and sending the Saturn into the back of the U-haul trailer.
The Focus ended up sandwiched between the Ford pick-up and the Altima, and its female driver had to be extricated from the vehicle. She was transported to the hospital with minor bruises.
The names of the drivers were not immediately available Thursday afternoon.
Deputies on the scene conducted a field sobriety test with the Ford pick-up truck’s driver, which proved inconclusive.
He was detained and taken to Palmdale Regional Medical Center for further blood tests.
The investigation is ongoing. Information is preliminary and could change with further investigation, according to deputies at the scene.
* Story updated. The Ford Focus driver was extricated from the vehicle. At least two people were transported to the hospital.

To the person who was offended by those of us who were concerned about horses being in the trailer: Have you ever seen an accident where horses were injured? It’s pretty horrific and traumatic for all involved. The police officer usually has to put the horse down if it’s injured because there are no ambulance services for animals. I have plenty of compassion for injured people but they get help and usually very quickly. Animals don’t.

only in palmdale would there be a person drinking and driving in the afternoon with a uhaul trailer
MR. PERPLEXED IN THE AV says
NOPE! THE U-HAUL TRAILER DRIVER WAS NOT DRINKING AND DRIVING. HOWEVER HE IS THE ONE THAT PROBABLY WANTED TO SAVE A FEW BUCKS AND HITCHED THE TRAILER HIMSELF INSTEAD OF LETTING SOME ONE FROM THE U-HAUL RENTAL DO IT. THE ONE APPAREANTLY THAT WAS DRINKING AND DRIVING OR MAYBE WITH A MEDICAL CONDITION WAS THE OLD MAN WITH THE HORSE AND CARRIAGE.

Is the last vehicle in this chain of cars liable for the accident?

No, it looked like a stand-in for a Sanford and Son junk truck and trailer.
