UPDATED: Teen shot dead at Lancaster house party

LANCASTER – A teenager was shot and killed at a house party in Lancaster early Saturday morning, authorities said.

The incident happened around 1 a.m. at a residence in the 700 Block of East Avenue K, according to the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.

The shooting happened after a confrontation erupted in the backyard of the home, witnesses said. Investigators were called to the scene regarding a juvenile being shot in the head, according to a Lancaster Station broadcast.

When officers from the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station, the California Highway Patrol and the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station descended on the scene, several partygoers could be seen running in every direction. Many of them appeared to be minors.

Deputies were able to detain close to 50 of the partygoers at the scene. They sat them on a curb and questioned them one by one. Many of them were released to the custody of waiting parents.

About a dozen were taken to the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station early Saturday morning for further questioning.

Later on, investigators said they still did not have any suspect information and were trying to get in contact with more witnesses.

The victim’s name is not being released pending notification of next of kin, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office. ABC 7 reports he is high school junior, and the house party he attended was posted to facebook and several social media outlets.

Anyone with information on this case is urged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau at (323-890-5500. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.

The victim has been identified as 17-year-old Kevin Tatum of Compton, and the shooting is believed to be gang related, according to the latest report from the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.

Guests were leaving the house party when a fight broke out and an unknown suspect produced and fired a hand gun, according to detectives. Tatum was hit by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene.

Homicide detectives are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500.

  11. I pray that they find the killer of this senseless crime ASAP and get them off of the streets before they harm somebody else. However, I also think that these adults who hold these parties at their house need to be more responsible. You can’t gather a big group of teenagers together and expect everything to run smoothly. This was a grown woman having a party for teenagers to give them something to do. All of her children are grown so I don’t understand why she would want to entertain them at her house. I’m not putting any blame on the home owner but there has been too many incidents where these house parties get out of hand and the home owners should have control over that. Honestly, if that was my child I would have sued. That’s just my oppinion.

  12. I am truly appalled by some of these comments! How dare some of you blame parents, kids being at a party at 1 am, etc.. I am guessing you are adults, shouldn’t you be blaming the killer? Maybe you need a time out to reflect. This is Real Life, not some movie, teenagers should be allowed to hang out with their friends, etc without being killed! Just because you do not agree with the parents that allowed their children to go to this party, doesn’t allow you to blame them for this unfortunate event. Kevin’s parents didn’t send their son off to be killed, common sense. How can you possibly have the adacity to write such rude comments when these parents are grieving for their son? The should have, could have, would have is too late at this point. I find it disturbing that blame is being placed everywhere but where it should be. I, myself wouldn’t allow my daughters to go..only because I have lived through some of these tragic things. However, if they were allowed to go and i chose to let them stay until 1 am, I dont think that makes me a bad parent or deserving of losing my child to murder! Murder is a senseless act that we cannot wrap our minds around, it will never make sense. Regardless of your parenting skills, occupations, bad kids, good kids, etc..no one deserves to lose their life! Maybe people should reach out to those suffering instead of judging based on their own standards..which are probably lie infested anyway.

I used to go to house parties when I was that age, the main diffrence I see now is, back then, my parents knew the address of where the party was. All of that is irrelevant. The fact is, this genenration is growing up with a “you owe us” mentality or “lazy” or “i want to be the man, and I have to prove myself to be fearful to others, not speaking ill of Kevin but more-so of the suspect. The reality is, these kids are cowards and lazy yet we cant get mad at them, are only followers of the previous generation. Anyways, I am not going to go on with my rant. Whether he was innocent or not, another young life was taken and that is sad within itself. The Tatums and those who knew Keving (including my sis and my cousin) are in my prayers!

      I have had the pleasure of meeting Kevin and am more than glad he was my son’s friend.
      I am truly and deeply saddened by his death.
      My heart goes to his family and all his friends.

  16. Since they were minors the adults of the home where the party was held should be responsible for the young mans death also. This city is going backwards again and getting out of control. There was the same type of thing less than a mile away in my track the prior week end and all young kids running everywhere after shots rang out. Rex sure doesn’t seem to be doing much except hiding. What ever happened to his A.V. WAR ON GANGS program?

      All those sitting on the curb, under the age of 18, should have been cited for breaking curfew. Great they called the parents, but they needed to be cited.

  18. How many people made calls to the Lancaster Station about this party? Why wasn’t it broken up by law enforcement?
    It reminds me of a few years back when the young girl was shot at the party held over Labor Day weekend. Cops were called for hours and never came untill after shots rang out. That’s when Sherry Marques made the ridiculous statement that neighbors need to step out of their comfort zone and call the cops when something is going on.
    If cops had been called, why wasn’t the “eye in the sky” watching the party goers.
    This IS NOT THE FAULT OF THE POLICE, let me make that clear. That is not what I am saying. I wonder why no cops had gone by the house to break up the large party. Were there some big emergencies going on in the city? Or were they all busy at the DUI check point?

    • Gladys, the cops working the DUI checkpoint are not the same ones assigned to work the streets that night. Those checkpoints are paid for with grant money from the state. In other words, cops who would otherwise be off that night. It is possible someone called about the loud party. Lancaster used to have cars that would respoond on Fri&Sat nights to those parties, but those cars were cut in the latest budget. Now, the regular patrol cars will get the party calls, but those parties have to take a back seat to calls with higher priority. Unfortunately, left ununattended, if the party is attended by ghetto dwellers, the occasional shooting will occur. On the flip side, when the party car cops were working and asking folks to turn down the music, or disperse the large crowd, many on this site complained “don’t they have anything better to do?”

  21. In my opinion, the parents of the minors who were out past curfew and arrested should have to appear before a judge and maybe spend a night or two in either jail or the morgue. Then, just maybe, they will show a lot more concern as to where their innocent “babies” are after curfew and act like parents. My dad waited up for me the one night I was late coming home, and it wasn’t pretty. When my kids were growing up I set a time for them to be home and imposed penalties for future activities if they were late even one minute. The parents are NOT raising these kids, the kids are raising themselves with no rules. Too bad for the parents of the kid shot, but it was inevitable that he would be a victim sooner or later. And yes, the person giving the party will probably be held responsible for this, but probably has nothing monetarily to lose.

  25. y son is an Army Soldier, I am very proud of him. I never let him out of my sight, I always knew where he was, even with both his Dad and I working, I knew what he was doing and where he was and with whom. Children are not capable of judging situations, even as teens, the parents have to set boundaries, limitations rules and expectations, other wise the kids just follow those that have no expectations in life, not the good path set down by the parents. These children should not have been allowed at this party, no matter what. I understand the womans wanting to help youth, this is not helping, thisis enabling children to break the law, curfew, underage drinking, drugs, what ever else was at the home. Plus guns and other weapons, she is just one woman, I wish we could do more for our kids, I drive this route most days on the way to and from my kid’s home. The kids that come from the school south of Ave K and Challenger are rude, nasty, cross the street into traffic, step off the curb causing drivers to swerve to miss them, I stopped at the McDonalds at Challenger and Ave K to use the bathroom and get an Iced coffee. All of at once about 30 kids descended on the store. They were loud rude sitting on the tables not the chairs or seats. causing the patrons to hurry up and finish their food and leave. They were demanding of the workers for their orders, yelling at each other, loud music. I was so shaken by this that I left. I don’t do well in loud crowds, and left, 2 women who were parked next to me said they had not seen anything like that, not a group of kids taking over a business and running off patrons. That McDonald’s is on the way home from my kid’s. I will not stop there.

        Everything is all about them. They go through life (sometimes short), acting like their life is a music video or movie.

If she indeed does frequent this side of town as much as she claims, she would know the kids she is talking about are a bunch of middle school kids. The young man killed here is a junior in high school. Hardly the same social circles.
          I take offense to her generalization, because it reflects an ignorance that takes no consideration for the young life lost. This young man was not a gang member, he was a victim of a crime committed by one though.

            I remember my days growing up here, remember all of us teens pushing the limits of teenage parties. And a good number of the city officials in BOTH towns were right there with us.
            Reading these comments, I never realized how many adults spend their time rewriting their personal histories.
            Only difference back then was every teen was white. Unless you hung with Frank Zappa’s group, who stayed busy playing guitar with our African American community in Sun Village. And there was a bit of partying going on there to.
            We had our share of tragedies. Less guns (although they were in most of our parents bedroom drawers)
            Lot’s and lot’s of drunk driving deaths, beat downs, running people off the road for entertainment purposes, date rapes, child molesters, pushers and users and every other social ill we see now.
            People just spent more time trying to hide it.
            We need to parent our children? Duh! Nothing like stating the obvious.
            But we also need to remember what we did. If for no other reason then to let your kid know you know! About what goes on. About how you pulled the wool over your parents eyes! You know how it’s done.
            And if you’re honest with them, they just might listen to you when you tell them how to protect themselves from dangerous situations they may find themselves in after they’ve pulled the wool over YOUR eyes, and end up somewhere they hadn’t planned for.

            And if you’re not a hypocrite, they just might call you for a ride when a party gets dangerous. Or the driver shouldn’t be behind the wheel. Or when your kid decides they want to see what it’s like and drink or take something they shouldn’t take. At that party they shouldn’t be at. At a time they should be home in bed. With people you wouldn’t approve of.
            You might save a kid’s life.
            And the life you save just might be your kid’s.

      • My posting has to do with children who are not taught respect for themselves or others, and this is in the neighborhood where the shooting took place, The reason I am not posting to Facebook is because this pertains to the shooting, a death of a child with potential and my outlook on the incident. I have the right to post here and since I am not using any offensive language or references and am not banned by the moderator then I will continue to post. I did not generalize that the kids were either middle school or high school. I did not state that the young murder victim was a gang member, what I said is there is no respect taught for either themselves or others, the shooter had no respect for another life,and the kids have no respect for the patrons of the restaurant. NO I am not trying to rewrite my childhood. I was not allowed to party, I was not allowed to date or drink or any of the stuff kids do. I was expected home from school, did my chores, school work and if I did go out it was to a school function or church function.   29. The things I’m reading is why I’m so disappointed in this valley. It didnt say this young man was in a gang but I can almost guarentee that the person that shot into the crowd was as they were with known gang members. One of the kids the shooter was with, my son had an issue with when he went to school. My other son was at that party, he went with a neighbor around the corner and the parent dropped them off and there was an adult there so no one thinks twice about it and trusts the other parents. I cant discuss all that happened but I can say with the help of all these kids doing the right thing they will get them. These kids that just went to have fun weren’t all bad kids but they endoured something very tragic, something extremely life changing and something no child should have to endure. Think about that when you’re giving your opinions. Think about these kids…think about that poor family that lost their child the day before Easter…think about how you can HELP in this community!

We have taken the boys to parties before and met the parents from the time they were in elementary school. For sleep overs and birthday parties and over night at the bowling alley. If you think for one minute you can personally know every parent at the high school you are out of your mind! That doesn’t mean that you lock children in the closet, they aren’t PETS! Protect your children…YES! Try to keep this from happening again…YES! But you must not have children because you would know for a fact that it’s impossible to shield them from everything in this horrible world without taking them into the forest and living a sheltered from the world life! My kids get to do fun things because they earned it! I can trust them and they are open with me. They don’t cuss or do drugs or get bad grades or get in trouble at school. I trust them because they give me every reason to. I personally wouldn’t have let him go but i’m not going to start pointing fingers for it! I’m gonna deal with what is facing me now and worry about what’s most important and that’s these kids. They don’t think this crap is cool! They’re scared! They are banning together in support of someone half of them didn’t even know because they know it could have been any one of them! For the one’s that weren’t so good and snuck out it’s a wake up call but I can tell you this…they’re talking…all of them are talking. This won’t be something they forget or that I as a parent forget. No one walked away from this without a lesson to learn and they don’t need you or any other adult for that matter making them feel like it’s their fault or their parents fault. The fault is on the person that shot that gun! So the only person that needs to grow up is you! When you all walk around pointing fingers get the whole story first not just what you read in the damn paper!

    • While you want to sit and say he was influenced by gangs because of his red bandana. You should go check out some of the schools today. Hundreds of kids are wearing bandanas in support of Kevin. Bandanas was Kevin’s thing. I had no problem letting my child wear a bandana in memory of his friend.
      People need to know what they are talking about before they open their big mouths.

I realize that there are lots of people here in the AV, and growing strong, this is the nest were all the Lame ass parents that kids can’t really handle LA because they badd isn’t really that bad, so they come here to showcase there talent and call themselves clicks, real thugs are thugs for life. Yes the parent isn’t the blame for there kids picking up a gun and shooting but there sure ass hell the blame for not telling they kids there bad, there messing up there lives, and there headed for prison. This particular house has been the party spot for at least 10 years. Yes she has parties I believe it started as something for the teens to do she has a wonderful heart but she hasn’t realized yet, that all the riff raff has moved up here and they want to be gangsters, but it’s very easy to be a gangster in Lancaster/Palmdale because there isn’t any real gangsters to shut this young generation of misfits down.
    No don’t get it twisted I’m not saying any form of gang banging is correct. If you know your kid is gang affiliated and yes it’s obvious, you as a parent should try and put an end to the [removed] because you know next is gun violence and heartache, I don’t know many gang bangers that don’t carry guns, or hang with rude boys. The reality of it all is yes someone should answer but does it fall on the home owner because she gave a party?
    The selling drinks to minors is questionable, but did anybody ask that question, we can point the finger but there is still lil Kevin’s life that will not be returned! Life is precious should the Daycare go on no the city should not allow any daycare or any other kids to stay there. The city should impose a fine on the owner and forbid her to have any functions at this property other than immediate family and if you say how will you know it’s immediate family, well because there wouldn’t be 200 teens and only 40 cars!
    To Rhenda you are a wonderful person you always been loyal and you want to see the best in everybody but stop trying to see the good in people especially the young, you always trying to help, think about for a minute there are so many teens homeless, living from pillow to post and you always taking somebody in, there parents have given up that’s why there homeless, what about you think about you from this point on. What could you have done different, simple you don’t have any teen age kids why keep having parties for the teens.

  34. This is so sad. I sat and watched a mother take her child and 3 friends to the party. SMH..and at least one of the other mothers did not know that her child went. Crazy…
    I am Thankful that I raise my kids the way I do. I do shelter my kids…but you have to anymore. Every house party you hear about out in the A.V. there is a fight or shooting. Sad!!

    • Lots of crazy stuff happens under the roofs label “Daycare”. Lots of things, except actual the actual care of children. They are mostly fronts for frauding the CCRC and other federal, county and state programs that pay costs for the baby mommas. I wonder how long it has been since the Daycare Licensing people have been out for an inspection? They seem to pass even the filthiest homes.

        • Concerned, the daycares I am talking about don’t really take care of kids…they just do the time sheets to get paid. The addresses are filthy houses that have often been abandoned (nobody really living there) once they get their license and know that no one is really gonna check on them. Paying agencies DO NOT COMMUNICATE with the licensing division, so the fraud goes UNDETECTED for years because everyone passes the buck. ITS A FACT!

    • Not sure how old you are, but when I was growing up I never ever disrespected what my parents said, nor did I ever even think about sneaking out at night.   39. Honestly, the fault starts with the parents/guardians. Also, the owner of the house involved with party, shooting, etc., should be held accountable. In my day we had adult supervision and someone watching who came in…the worst thing to happen at any teen parties (in my day) were fights.
    Apparently, the murdered teen was a good student, etc., he was just out with friends and I’m sure that he was expecting to die; shot to death. And many know the murderer(s).
    I drove by the crime scene earlier (I hadn’t heard the news yet). Too bad we don’t have current news coverage like in other parts of the world…But at 1 a.m. I was sound asleep.
    R.I.P. young man, and my sincere condolences to the family.

  41. This house is well known for throwing big parties and charging teens to get in.. There is alcohol and under age drinking. No Id required. I feel the adults throwing this party should be charged with murder. If he was my son I would be pursing them as well as the shooter! To the family Im so sorry for your loss. ONLY, The State of California, Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division has something to do with licensing. Good luck trying to get anyone to look into anything.

This will continue to happen in Lanscaster as this area is now known as the northern LA getto and all the low life’s are moving into this valley, such as gang members, drug dealers, section 8, etc. Best advise I can give you is to pack your bags and get out of this valley. I’ve made it mandatory that my children move away from here as soon as they graduated high school as they are not safe here.

    • Honestly, this is the worst advice you could give anyone! What are you going to do…run to the next town? or the next state? Got news for you, you can’t keep running! Its too costly and the “trash” will just keep following you. wherever you go. My cousin moved to Phoenix to get away from Section 8 people and now her new housing tract in Phoenix is full of them ….all from Compton, San Bernardino and Moreno Valley. Big lesson for her was her Palmdale neighborhood that was had just one Section 8 house actually cleaned up and got better after the problem-causing family moved.

      That’s the thing people have to keep in mind. Section 8 is not permanant. It provides a TEMPORARY house or apartment until the owner decides they want to sell the property or terminate their agreement with HUD and the housing authority. Section 8 renters are at the whim of the property owner and most of them are too stupid or shortsighted to try to buy anything when the market was at the bottom. Now prices are climbing again and they are being shifted again. So yeah they are enjoying their Lancaster/Palmdale McMansions right now but they wont be forever. One more bump in the housing market and they’ll be in Kern County or Victorville and good riddance!

      Stay where you, support crime fighting efforts, support law enforcement and support office holders who support law enforcement. Thats the only way anything will ever get better. Time is not on their side, finances are not on their side because they were never taught good financial sense and the housing market is definitely NOT on their side and will inevitably force them to go elsewhere.

        That being said, not all bad tenants are Sec 8. Some are home owners that got approved for bad loans, so the governement helped them refi. Now their payments have gone from $3000 down to $1200. Their houses are dumps, with broken down cars in the driveway and yards full of broken toys.
        I agree we all need to stay put.

  45. My guess is the person who did the shooting was not even in school either older or a drop out. The gun was most likely stolen. As for the kids not talking, I think one eventually will, but if they spill the beans in front of everyone they are also putting themselves and their families at risk. Many of these kids probably said they were spending the night at a friends house, or just snuck out. They said this party was posted on FB .. this is why if your kids are on FB you MUST have access to their accounts and at the very least monitor their walls and postings.

I disagree about the killing himself part it was a party, teens go to parties I use to go to them and lived out there and my curfew was not because my parent trusted me enough and it wasn’t as bad out there as it is now. I do blame the parents who allowed any and everyone to come to that party without proper security. Especially because it sounds like it was a minors party which is sad. Parents need to have more security at these parties if that was my child I’d make an issue over the parents allowing guns in their resident

  52. Most all shootings are a senseless act of violence. I am sure that this one was just as UNJUSTIFIED as most shootings involving a child. (you looked at my girlfriend, you bumped into me, you are wearing the wrong colors etc…). I have to question though the parents. Why are 16 and 17 year old children out at 1am AND at a party, where I am sure there was alcohol and possibly drugs involved. Do parents not keep a watchful eye on their children anymore?

    • What do normal people do at 1 a.m. ? I am sure that the parent’s where asleep, while the teen’s left their houses. Parent’s can only do so much; their all individuals that make their own individual choices. The younger generations just have a really messed up mindset.

      • Parents can do a lot more than they are doing. Parents need to stop being selfish. If you can make a child, you better learn to raise your child.

    • The parents of the kid having the party should be charge with contributing to the delinquency of minors. I thought there was a curfew in Lancaster? The parents of the party goers should also be investigated for not abiding with the teen curfew and making sure their child was home before the curfew time. Parents need to held accountable, a responsible parents makes better chances to have a responsible child.

Repeated parties that endanger children, held at the same house, resulting in death, should be second degree murder or accessory to murder!

          • Yes they were. And were at the house when the shooting happened waiting for back up for a fight that had already happened on side yard.. And they get called to that house,all the time for the parties. Talk what you know. There hands were tied because of stupid “parents chaperones” and “security” only at front.
