PALMDALE – The Palmdale City Library is offering two chess classes for kids in grades kindergarten through sixth.
Hosted by Daa Mahowald, the first class will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 28 from 5:15 to 6:45 p.m., and will teach the basics of the game. The second class will be held Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 5:15 p.m. and covers “winning chess moves.”
Registration for both classes may be made at the Library’s reference desk or by calling 661-267-5600.
“Chess isn’t just a game – it’s a way of learning self-discipline and strategy,” said Library Director Thomas Vose. “Help your kids learn a fun new way to challenge themselves by exposing them to this fascinating game.”
The Palmdale City Library also now offers e-books on its Web site through the 3M Cloud Library and Baker & Taylor’s Axis 360 service.
“We are so appreciative of the donation made by the A.C. Warnack Foundation,” said Vose. “Thanks to them, we’re now able to offer e-books free of charge to our customers, which will help foster the love of reading by using the latest technologies.”
Currently, there are over 800 e-book titles available, with e-readers and more selections coming soon. As with all of the Library’s materials, they are free to check out.
“Check out our selections for yourself on our new kiosk in the Library’s lobby, or browse and download them at home on our Web site either by clicking on the ‘Ebooks’ links or by searching our catalog,” added Vose. “We’re taking suggestions for new titles, too, so let us know what e-books you’d like us to carry.”
The Palmdale City Library is open seven days a week. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 10 am to 8 pm; Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm; and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm.
