PALMDALE – You are invited to a colorful celebration of Mexican culture and heritage in Palmdale this Sunday.
The inaugural Cinco De Mayo festival will be held from noon to 9 p.m., Sunday May 4 at Desert Sands Park, located at 39117 3rd Street East in Palmdale. General admission is $5, and kids under 12 are free.
The family-friendly event will include live musical performances, folklorico dancers, traditional Mexican fare, and activities for the kids, according to organizer Sam Roman.
“Most people used to drive down below to celebrate Cinco de Mayo because we didn’t have anything like that here,” Roman said. “This year we’re celebrating right here in the Antelope Valley.”
The inaugural Cinco de Mayo festival is presented by the Tavera Foundation.
It will feature dance performances by Grupo Folklorico Antelope Valley, as well at music by Los Incomparables de Tijuana, Los Tajadores De Sinaloa, Jesus Ramon Cordova, Skuadron, Luz del Vale, Yolanda Meza and many more. View a flyer for this event here.

Exactly what are you celebrating?
Alrighty then... says
Mexico borrowed money from France, England and Spain to finance its war with the United States. Mexico owed the French, English and Spanish governments a debt that it did not want to pay, so the three nations came over to occupy it until said debt was paid. The English and the Spanish gave up on collecting and left Mexico. The French stayed. The Mexicans rebelled against the French occupiers and they, too, decamped Mexico on May 5, 1862. Thus, Cinco de Mayo…
The true Mexican Independence Day is in September, actually. That’s when Mexico became independent of Spain.
I have never really understood Cinco de Mayo. I don’t see why you would want to celebrate the fact that you couldn’t pay your debts off and threw a tantrum when the debt collectors came?
Whatever.

I am Caucasian and truthfully, I look forward to such a special event. It’s fun to enjoy different cultures and by doing so we teach our children to accept everyone of every race. I look forward to seeing the folkloric dancers. When I was a little girl I used to love watching these dances – the dresses are incredibly beautiful Educate Everyone: I hope you will seriously come out and enjoy the culture without having prejudice against this event. The kids are so innocent and they proudly show off what they are taught. I hope there will be good food
