LANCASTER – The Ian Stewart Memorial Committee in conjunction with Antelope Valley Detachment #930 of the Marine Corps League is sponsoring an event next month to raise funds to honor Corporal Ian Stewart with a granite memorial at Quartz Hill High School.
This community event will take place on Monday, June 23, 2014, at Brävery Brewing in Lancaster.
Corporal Stewart was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton, CA. He was killed on December 12, 2004, by enemy action in Anbar Province, Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Stewart was a 2001 graduate of Quartz Hill High School and served in the Marine Corps with fellow Quartz Hill High School graduates Andy Strangio and Wyatt Waldron. Stewart is survived by his parents, Dawn and Dana Stewart and two siblings.
The memorial project was the brainchild of Stewart’s QHHS classmates and former Marines, Andy Strangio and Wyatt Waldron along with classmate Jeremy Evans. Evans, now a San Diego based attorney, is the Memorial Committee Chairman.
Evans expressed that “Ian is a great friend and Marine. He is missed by many. We started the project in March of 2013 and it is a joy to see everything coming together to create the lasting monument to him and our service men and women at Quartz Hill High School.”
Judy Hatcher is the Event Chairperson working in conjunction with the Antelope Valley Detachment #930 of the Marine Corps League.
“The excitement and momentum around building the memorial in honor of Cpl. Ian Stewart is taking hold in the Antelope Valley,” said Judy Hatcher. “As more people in the community learn about the project, we hope to see a greater outpouring of contributions. With the event at Brävery Brewing we are confident we will raise the $6,000.00 needed to erect the memorial to honor Ian.”
