PALMDALE – No one was arrested for driving under the influence at a Palmdale Sheriff’s Station sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint this past Friday night and early Saturday morning.
The operation was conducted, from 6 p.m. May 16 to 2 a.m. May 17, on 10th Street West at Technology Drive in Palmdale.
The results of the checkpoint are as follows:
* 1265 vehicles traveled through checkpoint.
* 1265 drivers were checked at the checkpoint.
* One suspended / revoked driver was arrested and sent to court.
* Three unlicensed drivers were arrested and sent to court.
* Two vehicles were impounded for 30 days.
* Two vehicles were released per checkpoint release procedures.
The checkpoint was one of many that have been or will be conducted throughout the year in Palmdale. The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the State of California’s Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) through the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.
The 4th Amendment says
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized
Independent says
DUI checkpoints are an example where SAFETY of the POPULATION is invoked to allow for SEARCH and SEIZURE without a warrant or any probable cause. In my view, a trampling of the 4th amendment (Bill of Rights). When the police inconvenience 1265 people looking to find some DUI drivers, and get none, then it is time to rethink the balance between SAFETY and FREEDOM.
Eric says
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled recently that police no longer need a warrant to search your car. Between The PATRIOT Act, “Probable cause” being ill defined, and the fact that the NSA has been monitoring your emails and calls for a long time, the 4th Amendment has basically been squashed. One of the greatest tragedies going on in America right now, our rights are fast being abolished, and government continues to grow and interfere unchecked.
William says
@Eric
I’m not sure if you and Independent both know that driving is not a right.
It is a privilege.
You need a license to drive.
You can’t just get in a car and go as though it were a ‘right’.
If you don’t pass the driving test, you have no ‘right’ to drive. If you get enough DUIs, you’ll no longer be able to drive.
If you want to drink yourself silly, you still have the right to speak, go to church, marry and exercise other rights but you don’t get to drive like that.
You give up certain rights to obtain that license. You don’t have the ‘right’ to drive on the sidewalk, the left side of road and other ‘freedoms’ and ‘liberties’ that so-called ‘patriots’ are consumed by.
And, if I recall, you give up the right to not produce your license when a cop pulls you over or decline getting out of the car for a sobriety check, etc.
While you two are obsessing over this the Koch brothers are purchasing your representatives in government for their own benefit not yours. If you think DUI checkpoints are bad, just wait till the brothers take over the country.
I’d find a better campaign than DUI checkpoints if I were you two…………unless you are alcoholics and don’t want to get caught.
Eric says
The issue wasn’t the license Bill. I have no problem handing my papers to the police at a checkpoint. I have an issue when they want to search my car with no good reason or without a warrant purely because they have a hunch (probable cause).
As far as your attempt to bring the Koch brothers into this; no worse than any other big money donor on either side of the aisle. Big money trying to force their views on the people. You dislike the Kochs because you don’t like what they do with their money. I don’t see you getting on George Soros.
Eric says
I resent the alcoholic comment Bill. I don’t drink often, and am responsible when I do. I paid $60 the other week for a cab ride to the bar and back. That money could have been spent better by tossing it at the girls, but I sucked it up and paid for the cab instead.
Jason says
Eric dont forget Bloomberg and Steyer as well. Apparently big money is only okay when it benefits the party you belong too.
Eric says
Does anybody really want to be associated with Bloomberg?
Its funny, because Bill watches the Daily Show. Pretty sure Jon Stewart took ol’ Harry Reid to task over his nature of criticizing big donors the Koch brothers, but refusing to criticize local buddy Sheldon Adelson.
William says
@Eric
Your car is also licensed by the state in order to be on the public roads. So, I suspect that in the eyes of the law, your car isn’t treated the same as your castle.
Why do you insist on being on the losing end of arguments?
Comparing the Koch brothers to George Soros is something you’ll always get from the right wing websites you visit.
Is Soros funding campaigns at the state level as do the Koch brothers through Americans for Prosperity?
Methinks you are exaggerating.
William says
@Eric
Jon Stewart goes after hypocrisy anywhere. Unfortunately for the right and Fox News, they are the biggest targets because they are the biggest hypocrites, n’est-ce pas?
Did anyone on the right dig in on Rupert Murdoch’s Newscorp phone hacking scandals in the U.K.? He owns Fox News and the New York Post tabloid.
Heck, the Valley Press barely gave it a line or two because they are ‘fair and balanced’ too.
You seem to ignore all the crapola on the right for some reason. Why is that? It’s way, way worse than anything the Democrats are doing or have done.
Like I wrote in an early comment, while you were in Iraq and Afghanistan, many of us here saw what the right has been doing for years and it ain’t patriotic and it ain’t good. And, the republicans are the ones who cut veterans benefits but you don’t howl at them.
Eric says
You ask why I want to be on the losing end of an argument. I ask why you want to trumpet the State so much.
Methinks your bias is showing. Dirty money in politics is dirty money in politics. Doesn’t matter if it is the side you disagree with, or the side you agree with. Somebody, with a bunch of money, is trying to use THEIR money to push THEIR views. You know what Soros and the Kochs have in common? They both want to use our government, our people, our resources, to make THEM more money.
Eric says
Bill, I don’t let them off any easier. I’ve been over at Infowars the past few days calling out the bigots who were slamming the supposed “homosexual agenda” that Nintendo was supposed pushing. I don’t do the right left thing. If there were more Republicans out of line here, I’d get on them too. You are the only one who continues to argue with me, and you clearly aren’t going to pick up Republican standards just so I can attack them.
Hostility and arguments aside Bill, I like you. Clearly, you are intelligent. We disagree, I can live with that. I’m glad that you are here. People need to make an informed choice, and they get to see at least two of the three sides here.
Eric says
Hey Bill, check this. I got hit in the shoulder my last time out. It hurts occasionally. I got hit in the shoulder in close proximity to an opium field. We weren’t there to destroy it, we were there to protect it. Right, so I got shot in my shoulder protecting an opium field.
If I go to the doctor and complain about the pain (regardless of which party is sponsoring VA care), you know what he’ll give me for the pain? An opium based pill. The irony is not lost.
William says
@Eric
Yes. The irony is quite stunning.
George Soros has been pretty up front about his contributions to various causes. I’ve seen him interviewed before. It’s just a right wing talking point to compare him whenever the Koch brothers are mentioned.
BTW. There’s a movie coming out about the Koch brothers that should be very informative. Meanwhile, Dinesh D’Souza, a right wing favorite who made a trashy movie demonizing President Obama pleaded guilty to campaign finance fraud and may spend some time in the clinker, hopefully, with Bob McDonnell, former governor of Virginia and, even more hopefully with Chris Christie if he is ratted out by one his ‘friends’. Scott Walker, governor of Wisconson is also being investigated. Those 3 were potential presidential hopefuls. How fun time is when you’re having flies.
I have no idea what a Koch brother’s voice sounds like as they do their ‘business’ behind the scenes and it’s not in our interest.
Back in 2009, I concluded that the republicans had gone too far as they did during the Clinton years and as they still are doing. So, I ain’t cutting them any slack even if the Democrats have their own faults which are generally being too passive and unwilling to get down and dirty.
I heard a quote the other day, I think attributed to a Japanese person during the samurai period.
“He who will do what his opponent won’t do, has the advantage”. In the case of the GOP/TP run by the crazies, the Democrats don’t have the gene in their DNA to shut down the government as a threat to repeal Obamacare, for example.
So, given that circumstance, I do what I do to defeat or oppose the republican party. The only exception I have is Mayor Ledford, who you might notice isn’t popular with the ‘good ol’ boys’ in Lancaster because “He who won’t do what the they will do is at a disadvantage” to paraphrase the above quote. So, he lost when he ran for the Assembly, I think it was the Assemby. Same with Jonathan Ervin, a classic example of the difference between the left and the right and the wretched Rex Parris and his minions.
Why do you resent the ‘alcoholic’ comment? Denial is the hallmark of alcoholics. I’m not saying you are one……unless. And, the ‘unless’ is the modifier.
Daniel says
So where might a person learn just how much it costs to run a DUI check point on any given night. That would be interesting to know. Out of 1265 cars six are found to be problematic. That is good but like a low scoring football game, it must have been a boring night. Thanks for the good work officers.
Joe says
I know it costs a lot more than what they’re going to make off of the citations that were given that night.
