PALMDALE – Dozens of volunteers will descend upon the Joe Davies Heritage Airpark at Palmdale Plant 42 this Saturday, July 12 at 7:30 am to take part in the City of Palmdale’s Adopt-a-Plane program.
“Several volunteer groups have ‘adopted’ aircraft at the park, which means that they commit to cleaning their aircraft display on pretty much a monthly basis,” said Palmdale’s Facility Coordinator Kathleen Whiteside.
Among the “adoption” duties are picking up trash and debris, pulling weeds and keeping dirt and dust off the planes by pressure washing them.
Each group that adopts a plane has a sign displayed next to its adopted aircraft. Currently, groups that have adopted planes at the park include:
- Air Force Association AV Chapter (F-100 Super Sabre),
- A.V. Academy (A-4 Skyhawk),
- AV Riders (A-7 Corsair),
- Antelope Valley Sea Cadet Squadron (F-14 Tomcat),
- Cochran Family (T-33 Starfighter),
- Connect1NG (F-5 Freedom Fighter Tiger),
- Highland High School Air Force Junior ROTC (Phantom II),
- Knight High School Air Force ROTC (C-140 Jetstar),
- Lancaster High School Eagles Robotics Club (F-105 Thunderchief),
- Major McManus Boys Club (T-38 Talon),
- Northrop Grumman AV Recreation Club (B-2 Spirit model),
- The Palmdale Aerospace Academy (F-104),
- The Palmdale Aerospace Academy Robotics Team (C-46 Commando),
- Friends of ‘Skylar James DeSrat’(F-16 Falcon), and
- S.O.A.R.( F-101 Voodoo).
The Antelope Valley Sunrise Rotary will be providing refreshments for the volunteers.
Planes that are available for adoption include: B-52 Stratofortress (for a large group), Triumph 143, F-86 Sabre, X55A ACCA, and Boeing 747 – Shuttle Vehicle Transport (for large group).
“If your group is looking for a way to get involved in the community, this program provides an excellent opportunity with a minimal time commitment,” Whiteside said.
