Lancaster – The Antelope Valley Transit Authority’s two new electric buses are ready to “POWER ON”!
Both buses joined their diesel counterparts in providing service to Antelope Valley residents on Wednesday following a ribbon cutting ceremony at Los Angeles County Fire Station 129.
AVTA Board Members, local officials, and Los Angeles County Fifth District Supervisor Michael Antonovich were on hand to officially welcome the buses into the AVTA fleet.
Thanks to Supervisor Antonovich, AVTA received $1.9 million in local funds to purchase the zero emission vehicles. This funding allowed AVTA to acquire two buses through an assignment from the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s contract with BYD, a Lancaster-based, electric bus manufacturing company.
“We are extremely grateful to Supervisor Antonovich and to the Board of Supervisors for their generosity in providing the funds. We are looking forward to putting these buses into service so that our residents can enjoy the benefits of a smooth and quiet, electric bus ride,” said AVTA Executive Director Julie Austin. “If all goes as anticipated, we intend to seek new sources of funding to add more electric buses to the fleet.”
The service kick-off is the next step in a 12-month demonstration project designed to evaluate the performance of the zero emission buses. Both electric buses will undergo testing in all types of conditions, such as extreme weather, long distance travel, and at full weight capacity.
The project is moving forward, and initial tests indicate the electric buses are performing even better than expected, according to AVTA officials.
If the demonstration project continues to prove successful, efforts will be ramped up to procure additional grant funding for future electric buses.
AVTA is also working with WAVE Inc. to install wireless charging stations at the agency’s two major transfer centers in Palmdale and Lancaster. A $670,000 contract has been awarded to the Utah-based company, which relies on new technology that eliminates the need for a hard wire when charging. The hard wire limitation has slowed the inclusion of electric buses into transit fleets nationwide because of the reduced operating time associated with a single battery charge. The WAVE inductive charging system requires a bus to park on top of an electromagnet during its recovery time in order for the wireless charging to occur. As a result, zero emission buses can remain in revenue service as long as their diesel counterparts.
“The Board of Directors strongly supports alternative energy, and electric buses are the logical next step in transit.” stated Board Chair Norm Hickling. “We are confident our analysis is strong and our outcomes will be successful.”
AVTA provides local, commuter and dial-a-ride service to a population of more than 450,000 residents in Lancaster and Palmdale as well as the unincorporated portions of northern Los Angeles County.

So we have to pay almost 2 million for the busses, and then almost 700,000 more for the charging system and then test them for the next 12 months to see how the work out. It would seem to be much better to spend 320,000 each for CNG buses that we can get 6 of and put into service right now that have already proven reliability.

Plus, a half hour later, you want another Chinese bus.

But if you bought CNG busses you wouldn’t have those $1.50 an hour jobs available for 30 people. For now at least. If they don’t sell more than two busses not sure how long the shop will stay open. I guess for $1.50 an hour you can wait it out a bit.

How about those finances though? It looks like county tax money did a nice circle, all to wind up back at BYD, who will be paying what portion of taxes? I’m just trying to figure out how much money just disappeared.
