Car crashes through Lancaster living room, suspected DUI driver arrested

LANCASTER – A suspected drunken driver was arrested early Sunday morning after crashing his car into an East Lancaster home, authorities said. Luckily, no one was injured.

The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of Norberry Street and 27th Street East, according to Lancaster Community Relations deputy Miguel Ruiz.

Ernesto Carbajal, 21, lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a home on the 44600 block of 27th Street East, Ruiz stated.

The vehicle jumped the curb and crashed through a cinder block wall before crashing through the back wall of the home and into the living room.

“Upon arrival we noticed that a car had breached the wall into the living room of a single family dwelling,” Said Captain Joseph Williams of Los Angeles County Fire Station 117. “All occupants were in bed sleep[ing], so there were no injuries.”

April Chamberlain said she was in the home sleeping at the time of the crash.

“I heard the commotion in the living room. I checked and there was a car in the living room,” Chamberlain said.

Carbajal, who was the only person in his vehicle, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, Ruiz said.

  1. This guy is [removed]! I know him very well! And yes he was drinking and driving. He was at a party that night and there are pictures for proof with beer in his hand! So there is no doubt he was drinking! People drink and drive but this is beyond that! HE CRASHED INTO SOMEONES HOME! Everyone says it’s okay we all make mistakes! But if it was their house that destroyed like that they wouldn’t be saying poor guy and that it was a mistake. Mistake or not he did something stupid! Also he was at a party with “friends”. What friends let you drive home like that? Not good ones. Someone was more afraid about getting vomit In their house instead of offering to give them a ride home or to stay where he was until he was actually well enough to drive! He’s lucky he didn’t kill no one in the accident or else this would have been murder and again people will defend him! But they wouldn’t if their house was the one that got crashed into and destroyed.

  2. I’ll bet almost every person posting on this blog has had drinks before driving home. Every one of you have friends or family who drink and drive everyday. Don’t act like you don’t go toss back a few brews watching the football game, then drive on home. You do it, your friends do it, your family does it, and the cops are doing it too when they aren’t working. It’s about moderation. If you have a car and you drink, then you drink and drive at some point. If you claim you never have then you’re a delusional liar.

    • Oh believe me! He was drunk I know him and he was drunk! There is even pictures of him that very same day drinking so yea!no doubt he was drunk

  4. Of course Ernesto is human, and apparently he has quite a few friends and loved ones backing him up. However, what he did was extremely poor judgement on his behalf and he needs to be held accountable. Even ONE innocent bystander from drunk driving is one too many, and thus the punishment needs to be strong in order to get the message across. At the end of the day, it is impossible to feel remorse for Ernesto considering his extreme selfishness and lack of consideration for the livelihood of others that he showed when he was driving while intoxicated.

    • All he has to do is say “my bad” and it’ll be OK. That’s the thinking of all those of you who defend a guy who got behind the wheel impaired.
      I’ll go out tonight, get drunk, do something asinine to get someone to chase me, then crash into a house, leave a huge hole in their house, and say, “my bad.” It’ll all be OK!

  5. It’s ironic how someone driving under the influence can crash into a house 70 MPH and still be defended because he is a good guy. I understand this could be your family member or friend. This is only okay in your eyes because it is someone you know or love. Take a second to look at the bigger picture though. What about the people he put in harms way? The house he destroyed, the potential lives he could’ve taken. Did you guys know there were two baby’s and a pregnant mother sleeping in the living room nearly ten minutes before he came crashing into that same exact spot? The outcome of this could’ve been way worse, and it cracks me up thinking you guys would still be defending this guy if lives had been taken that night. This kid getting into an altercation and flying down a neighborhood because he was being chased IS NOT a justifiable reason for what happened, let alone what could’ve happened.Just because he is a “good guy” and “been through so much” *someone cue the violins please* does not mean that he shouldn’t take responsibility for the choices he made that night.

    • I know dat my neighbors were messing round and drove their car in our house one time and my lil brother broke his arm but we didn’t trip out or act all foul over it. We were cool. We were glad no one got hurt worse. My baby sister was playing in the living room before the car crashed da house but she had went to da bedroom and was fine. Accidents happen and that’s all I can say. They didn’t put that on the news. But Lake LA is kinda far.

      • Another “are you kidding me comment”! Jaquanda, you all probably didn’t care because, for one, it wasn’t your house and you just moved on. For 2, you have probably never earned a dime and all your life have had money and benefits given to you. Easy money doesn’t ever teach anyone the value of a dollar. For 3, you are so used to seeing your family and peers commit crimes that it doesn’t even faze you. If someone in your circle gets in trouble, everyone rallys around them and makes excuses and says “God got your back”. No accountability regardless of the generation.

I have read comments that are threats of violence. I have read comments by one individual that belonged on a soft porn site.     • I’m so glad no one got hurt. It’s was the grace of God. None of this was ok and I see the bigger picture. No one should drink and drive. I just hate alcohol. He will be accountable by what fair in our judicial system. I think it’s been harder on the family but I’m sure the driver is having a hard time dealing with his actions. Again I’m so glad all the members of the house were saved. I sure hope they get their house repaired soon or already have. Oh my 70 miles per hour down a street with houses is fast. They need speed bumps on that street I hear people speed all the time. We all got to drive a little slower to avoid things like this. I hope next time he just calls the police.

  7. Sad story. Drinking and driving never mix. I think those who drink have a mis guided notion that their ability to do things while even under the influence of 1 beer isn’t impaired and many people lose their lives over this combination. I do how ever feel this young person isn’t a common offender and hope the courts will consider his record. Sounds like he isn’t a trouble maker and this could of been a spruce of something. Just very unfortunate. I’m sure his parents are concerned and upset. Kids ususally don’t want to disappoint their parents and I think this gentleman is no different. I bet he will make better choices in the future.

    If you have good credit you don’t need to pay a down payment and yes they do ask for your license and insurance. It’s been my experience that their policy is no license or insureance equals no car. The dealer didn’t get a penny from me and still required those things

  9. Another salacious story filled with rank speculation and very few facts. Only facts we actually know is that Carbajal crashed through a cinder block wall and through a living room wall. This is not journalism: It’s crap! A real journalist would not be getting his information from a community relations person in a city a dozen miles away. The crash happened in Palmdale so the AV Times quotes someone in Lancaster???. I know from personal experience how WRONG the AV Times can get a “story”. Where are the statements from eye witnesses? And what’s all this crap about “suspicion”? Why couldn’t the author investigate if Carbajal was even given a field sobriety test or a breathalyzer test? There isn’t even a statement about his BAC.

  11. I really thought this was just another drunk driver story. I can remember making judgmental statements about the drive with my friends. I feel so bad after reading all the posts. It must have been scary to know you were being chased by a car after seeing someone pulling out a weapon prior to you driving off. That is so upsetting. Its also upsetting that this poor guy feared for his life and was only trying to get to a safe place, I’m sure. No one wants to crash, no one wants to ruin their car and risk their own life by crashing. What a truly scary story. I also bet he just felt sick about the house he ruined and just hoped he didn’t harm anyone. What is this world coming to. Can’t was just get along and respect others.

  12. I have heard controversial sides to this story but there is overwhelming evidence to support the driver. I’m happy to say that there are honest people out there still. Its just frightening to know someone would rob you when you were just in an accident and furthermore beat you up. I feel so bad for this guy. I also feel bad for the home owners. I hope they fix the house soon. It must be stressful.

    There is a lot of people who feel like I do. There is so much evidence to support what you said. People are coming forward and I’m glad. It would be horrible for someone to go down for something when there was a reason for doing something. I still say drinking and driving don’t mix but I wasn’t there and don’t know if you were or weren’t. I do know I love you and your family and I’m grateful to know you guys. You were raised with awesome supportive parents who taught you well. Stay up my boy.

    • He was making a car payment so I’m sure he does! Can’t buy a sweet car like that and leave the dealer until you provide that info.

      • marc—Dealers don’t care if you have a drivers license or insurance. You just sign a waiver before you drive off.

        • Actually they do. I use to work as a sales person and you could not leave the dealer without Ins. I also have bought several cars and you can not leave without INS. You must show them your current ins card and your license. Then you can add the new car.

          • I just bought 2014 vehicle with no dl or insurance. As long as they see that $$$$ they don’t give two sh**s if you got a dl or insurance all they care about is how much they’re gonna get out of that $3000 you put down..

          • Marc—I too purchased a brand new Chevy 2500HD with no drivers license or insurance. I just needed to sign a waiver saying I did not have a drivers license or insurance. They got their money and went to the next person. I now have a drivers license, insurance, and current tags.

      • These must be unknown dealerships because I just called 4 large named dealers in the AV and all told me you must present a valid Drivers License and Proof of Insurance. They had no clue about any waiver.

        • I got my last 2 cars at Hunter Dodge and you have to have those items….you show them the proof and they verified to make sure it was valid.

          • I told you my personal experience about not only purchasing a new truck, but also a Chevy Malibu without a license or insurance. Makes no difference to me if you don’t believe my comments.

  15. They didn’t take his cell phone and wallet to rob him, they held on to them until the police arrived because he was trying to leave the scene of the accident.

      • Your comment makes no sense. Let’s help you clear up somethings. The guy was being chased by another car. Thus, yesss, he was running away from someone chasing him, PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT!!!!!!!! After the accident he was disoriented from the impact, Duh as anyone would be after hitting a wall at I’m guessing 60 or 70 miles per hour, busting through a brick wall and then through a house. Oh ya and let’s not forget most likely having the airbag deployed at a high rate of speed in the face and head. Aaaaa this tells me he would be disoriented. I work in the medical field and have seen this be the case many times. Running away would not be a conscience nor sub-consicence choice at this moment. That would take place some time after recovery from the impact. So I highly question that the driver would be attempting to flee. again sir or Mam your statement doesn’t make sense.

    • That’s a crock of crap. If they weren’t stealing it why is it that he doesn’t have it in his possession and it was no where to be found. I know for a fact that Heather and Jacob said to the driver after taking his phone and wallet, Jacob said hey that’s a nice watch and tried to physically remove it and the drive said that watch meant so much to him that he rather hold on to that watch and endure being kicked in the ribs because he wouldn’t let it go. Heather and Jacob are liers. And you sound like your trying to make them look good.

    • Oh Lord are you serious! If they were not trying to rob them then he would have his belongings don’t you think. You don’t take something from someone and say the intent was to keep him at the accident and then just forget to return his things. What a lie. And yesss he still hasn’t got his things back and the cops said they don’t have them nor has anyone turned them in. They weren’t at the accident site because I went there and the home owners said they checked and nothing of his was at the scene. Now what excuse do you have or what story are you gona invent.

    • I think there is a lot of dishonesty going on. You would only need to do one or the other. If you were detaining someone so they would not leave then you would only need to hold on to them. You wouldn’t need to beat someone up or take their things. If its true there was only one driver and he was drunk then he wouldn’t be a threat to anyone because of a drunk persons state of mind and they would be easy to manipulate into sticking around. It sounds like to me that the driver was completely coherent There was never any mention about the driver becoming combative so what was the need for such violence if the driver wasn’t being robbed. Sounds to me that the people who say they were helping, saw an easy way to come up on things and took the chance they had. I work with alcoholics and most of them just want to sleep or be left alone. Had this driver been truly drunk after an accident like that, they would have been very calm and laid out as I like to put it. Once the so called good people had the drivers information by means of his cell phone and wallet then there was no need to maintain any physical hold on him because he could be easily located by the information the so called good people obtained. There are many holes in the post above. People you need to read between the lines.

  16. Heather Lopez is a person who is always causing drama. She is a habitual lier and is always up to no good. How can you take the word of someone who is always drunk her self, uses drugs and is constantly partying it up. Through my own observation of Heather And the guys with her, they were only out to use the situation to come up on things that were not their’s. Jacob is a violent person and he is the one who viciously and savagedly attacked the driver of the car. The other witnesses said heather saw the car accident and her goup of people go over there start haggling the car accident victim. Then to hide what they did the story was made up that he was trying to flee. These were not good people.

Ever notice how all accidents in the Antelope Valley are ‘suspected DUI’ yet government statistics show 80% of all car accidents have nothing to do with DUI driving.

  20. Everyone knows there’s two sides to every story and there is the truth from one pair of eyes and then there is truth from another. What if, just what if Ernesto Carbajal was verbally attacked at a party, tried to verbally defend himself, decided it was time to leave and was followed by people out to cause bodily harm. What if he was so scared he excelorated down a lonely residential street and noticed the car chasing him had just sped up. What if as he glance in his rear view mirror and saw them coming closer and then noticed it was to late to turn as he saw the road curve. What if after the accident he exited the car disoriented and felt like, “What am I doing in a living room” due to the force of the accident and most likely the air bag being set off. What if the people who saw the accident and who were also at another party and who were drinking thought it was an opportunity to take advantage of the whole situation. It has been said over and over by many people. This person was hit, beat and kicked. He was robbed and lies were created to make it seem the driver was going to run but the so called good Samaritans needed a cover for their crime. So many what ifs. I think the what ifs could go either way but my gut tells me that this wasn’t just a wild kid at a party getting crazy and had no regard for human life. Something tells me things are not what they seem.

  21. The judicial system will handle it. There is only one person who will decide his punishment. But from all the comments I think as a community we are hastily convicting someone who may have some validity for crashing into that house. Just something to think about folks

    I love you and support you. I am positive this situation or anything like this will ever happen again. You are just an amazing guy and this doesn’t change my view on you at all. Again it was a bad choice and you know that. I’m sure your regretting the whole thing in fact I know you are. Because I know the stand up forthright guy you are, things will work out how their suppose to and you will gradually regain an even better life. As we experience trials and tribulations we learn from our experiences. Use this stepping stone to improve your life and avoid people who will tear you down. We have all made mistakes, some worse than others but we use those bad choices to gain insight about choices in the future. If you need help paying restitution please don’t hesitate to contact me.   24. Ernie was definitely ok when I last saw him like minutes before this. I didn’t see him out of his senses at all. I highly doubt this happened because he was “under the influence” or even that he tried to flee. He’s a good guy, whether you know him or not, you don’t know a person by reading a partial story online, and I’m highly against drinking and driving; I feel there should be a more thorough investigation. And all of you should stfu. No one here knows what really happened besides Ernie himself, and I do hope the truth prevails.

    • You said it well GG. I am also against driving under the influence. This is an isolated case with extenuating circumstances and again like you said only Mr. Carbajal was there. These are all judgmental people throwing out an opinion. I think the supporters of Carbajal know him well and that’s what matters. The truth will be known, I’m sure

  26. It could have been his life had the accident not have happened. People die all the time in Lancaster due to thugs and senseless violence. This very well could have been a life saving event and many people don’t think about that. Had the people in the car that was chasing him caught up to him, they could have shot, stabbed or beat him to death, as it happens all the time. He isn’t the kind of guy to provoke things. Its to bad the female and her friends took advantage to rob and inflict pain on someone. Karma will take its turn. I hope they trace the phone they stole from him. Let the good Samaritans explain why they have his phone at their house. Also if someone was fleeing like they claim, punching someone in the face over and over and kicking them in the ribs is excessive force to hold someone until the cops comes. You can restrain without that type of violence. It seems they got off on doing it and that’s sick minded people. I do feel bad for the occupants and its unfortunate. I am glad that God was watching over them and kept them all safe. They are innocent victims in this hole thing and I feel their worry, concern and stress.

  27. Well let us see at 1:30am. One very drunk driver drives through a living room of someone residence. Someone states, we do not under the situation. He is not a bad guy? Maybe is not a bad guy because he did not KILL some THIS time. But for sure he is a selfish person by put that family at risk of death and injury. We have seen way to many innocent people die because of these DUI drivers. He will have his date in court unlike so many dead victims of DUI drivers. Drinking & driving is NOT A MISTAKE it is POOR SELFISH JUDGEMENT.

People are always naturally inclined to speak harshly negative about a person on news forums without knowing the complete situation or the individual, he didn’t crash into the house because he was madly drunk or angry or depressed he was completely coherent & alert his alcohol level was barely at/over the limit but not even close enough to say that his motor skills were disabled in any way he was not planning on driving either but the predicament he was invloved in made him react quickly & out of fear he was being followed & chased at a high rate of speed, he was heading towards his car to grab some belongings at a friends house when a group of random individuals approached his car & started harassing & taunting him he got in the car shut the door and they came back they got into a verbal argument and a individual seemed to be pulling a weapon out they started rolling there windows down again & at that moment he felt he had no other choice but to drive they started following him & tailgating him at high speeds he took a straight away to fast & before he could react to the hidden turn his breaks locked & that’s when he hit the house & to clarify the so called “hero neighbors” were not regular good Samaritans but thugs having a party who saw him limping out of the car & laying in the rubble he was not trying to flee yet they jumped him & stole his belongings even after he repeatedly told them he wasn’t drunk & that they were chasing him & then they used the “he was fleeing excuse “when the cops arrived to cover their ignorant animalistic behavior it makes me sad that all these people speak in such manner without knowing, I understand things could have been way worse either way but thank God nobody died sometimes things occur in life that you can’t control what’s meant to happen is going to happen, & most of the time to mold you into a better person.

      • Obviously your trying to take everything out of context in a negative manner to favor your personal perspective on the matter, I didn’t mean the residence’s literal neighbors I’m referring to the individuals being called “neighbors” in the situation I know it wasn’t literally the neighbors that beat him they’re being called neighbors because there was a party going on in the general vicinity those individuals that were there happen to see the scene & decided to take advantage of the situation in a Malicious way & I said THEY covered their actions when the police got there by saying he was fleeing never did I say the police were covering up any actual incidents learn how to read before responding.

    • Unfortunately, the circumstance did not result in a positive outcome no matter what side you are in. One person gets chased by an SUV full of people that potentially want to cause bodily harm, and a family is trying to figure out how to fix their home, and also dealing with mental trauma and post stress…

      Thank god nobody got hurt as a result of this accident.

    • Just like the Drunk Driver who crashed into an apartment on ave R and killed a young girl. He was released right after the crash as well. But hey he wasn’t drunk or high right?? I mean like you said they released him right after. Stop defending him. No matter what the story is, they wouldn’t arrest him for suspicion of DUI if they didn’t have cause, Bottom line he drank and drove and now he should be hit with the max so he Never does it again.   31. After finding out what exactly happened. This guy was being chased by a silver extrra. Witnesses have corroborated this. He attempted to get away from them but was unsuccessful clearly. I would like to recant my former statement. I was making an opinion based on what I thought happened. I want to put it out there that a female named Heather Lopez and a guy named Jacob stole the drivers cell phone and attempted to rob him of his wallet and watch while Jacob cowardly beat up the driver to steal his stuff. To taKe advantage of someone who just had an airbag hit his head is just sick. Honest witness accounts and physical evidence proved he was not trying to flee the scene and the driver wasn’t even cited or charged with anything like that. It’s sick how evil people look to take advantage of others. An investigation will prove out in court and I hope the culprits stand accountable. Hopefully the paper will run another story about the events that have unfolded and clear up that it wasn’t just another drunk driver story. I believed him to be upset about something because that’s the only reason I could think of that would make him turn to drinking. I was wrong and apologize for jumping the gun and making a statements without finding out the whole story.

  36. Yes, I am coming to his defense. I know this guy personally and am very close to him. He is a role model no matter what any of you say. He was gong through something horrible and that was the way he was dealing with it. Yes it was a horrible horrible choice and he will be held accountable for it. But none of you are anyone to judge. I would not be standing up for him if he was a loser. I would not waste my time commenting. You can write all the horrible things you want.   39. actually there is in this case, that car that you see there isn’t even his car he drives a white car, and it said suspicion guess what he was released a hour later if he was that drunk and going at a very high speed and acting a fool they would not have released him so soon. So again there is more to this story then you actually know. And he is paying a price for it.

  41. I keep reading that the suspect is a good guy who just made a bad choice. We all make mistakes etc. My mistakes don’t involve demolishing a house. Look at what happened on Easter in Palmdale where the same thing happened. A drunk driver crashed through a house, but in that situation a teenage girl was killed. Thankfully this didn’t happened, but it could easily have.

    This whole culture of “we are all only human”, “we all make mistakes” is a bunch of BS. It allows people to feel it is ok to do horrendous things while the public feels sorry for them.

    • There is nothing more to the story. Guy gets drunk, guy drives car at high rate of speed, guys loses control of car, guys plows thru brick wall AND house wall. Deputies arrive and arrest drunk guy. No ones reading anything into the story. The facts are all right there. In case people are wondering. Police don’t arrest for “Suspicion” of drunk driving. They give sobriety tests, breath tests, & blood tests. The high rate of speed comes from being able to go thru a brick wall and still have enough to make it thru the entire house wall, means, a high rate of speed. That about says it all.

Making a conscious decision to get behind the wheel of a 4,000 lbs piece of steel and driving it, is not a mistake. That’s an “On Purpose” that has the potential to take a life. Good guy? I have since practically disowned them until I see improvement (yes I do help them improve if they want to). the fact is he made the choice to drink and drive. if he learned from it good, if not he’s just another statistic that’s going to be the death of another human being.

        don’t defend people just because you know them. and if you know him why weren’t you there watching over him during this hard time in his life. he should have had people staying over and keeping him company, just for this kind of reason.
