LANCASTER – University of Antelope Valley is starting an intercollegiate men’s basketball program, Athletics Director Jeff Bussell announced this week.
UAV is recruiting players immediately, and the inaugural season is slated for winter 2015.
“We are truly excited to add a premier sport like men’s basketball to our athletics program,” Bussell stated. “Basketball is rich in history and we believe UAV can provide a quality opportunity for those looking to play at the college level and get a great education. We look forward to building a top-notch program that attracts new students, impacts the Antelope Valley community and generates more interest in the great things we are doing at UAV.”
The Pioneers are members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), where they currently compete in the Association of Independent Institutions (AII). The Pioneers will enter the California Pacific Conference (CALPAC) for the 2015-16 season of play.
The schedule will feature preseason match-ups against NAIA, NCAA DIII, NCAA DII and NCAA DI programs. The Pioneers will play 14 Cal Pac Conference games. The Cal Pac stretches from Arizona to Northern California, and the Pioneers will match up against California Maritime Academy (Vallejo, CA), Embry-Riddle University (Prescott, AZ), La Sierra University (Riverside, CA), Menlo College (Atherton, CA), Pacific Union College (Angwin, CA), Simpson University (Redding, CA) and the University of California-Merced (Merced, CA).
