PALMDALE –The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Palmdale Station will be conducting a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint on Friday, Jan. 16, at an undisclosed location within city limits, between the hours of 6 p.m. and 2 a.m.
Deputies will be contacting drivers passing through the checkpoint and looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment. Officers will also check drivers for proper licensing and will strive to delay motorists only momentarily. When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving.
Recent statistics reveal that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems. A study of active drivers showed more tested positive for drugs that may impair driving (14 percent) than did for alcohol (7.3 percent). Of the drugs, marijuana was most prevalent, at 7.4 percent, slightly more than alcohol.
Drivers caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes, and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent. Nearly 90 percent of California drivers approve of DUI checkpoints. DUI Checkpoints are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, affording the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence. Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public.
Funding for these operations is provided to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Ashley is a hardline radical! Justice is tempered with mercy, so you Ashley with your hardline radical thinking would only make things worse than they already are. Your previous comments over the last few weeks have shown you to be a person that is a name caller, using words like moron and idiot to describe others, while stating just how smart you are. Resorting to name calling, and being condescending to others doesn’t accomplish anything, and only shows that your logic is suspect.
Ashley says
I voice my thoughts and opinions. I don’t need go to agree and don’t need your approval. Just as your opinions are your own.
Good day!
Ashley says
And furthermore I have only posted on this story and the story of the old man that was killed in his scooter.
Ehhh... No. says
Not true.
Ashley says
it isn’t unfair at all when you get a drivers license you take the responsibility that you will operate your motor vehicle in proper working condition.
There should be no excuses and no exceptions that is why people feel so entitled. To many slaps on the hand and not enough consequences for your actions.
If your windshield cracks while you are out pull over and get your car towed to a repair shop or to your home until you are able to fix it, same with a burnt out tail light. you should not be operating your car if it not road worthy and safe for the cars and people around you.
That is the drivers responsibility and if you don’t take care of your responsibility then you shouldn’t benefit from the privilege of driving.
Eric says
Hmm, so the next time you get all flustered and forget to use your turn signal we should take your car?
Are you the exception to the rules? Or are you just so out of touch with reality that you don’t understand how some things work.
Some of us only have 1 car, and spending $200 to replace a windshield immediately can put a family in dire straits. Maybe they just shouldn’t drive into work since they don’t have the money to repair it, can lose their job, start accepting welfare, all until they finally save enough money to fix it right?
Ashley says
I always use my blinker. And I stated that if the car is not road worthy such as a broken windshield.
So you drive with a broken windshield and you get in an accident and kill someone because the sun glares on the crack and momentarily blinds you and the person who dies is dead because you couldn’t afford to fix your windshield?
When you own/operate a car you are responsible for it financially and that means repairs. Don’t have a car if you can’t afford to maintain it. Take the bus or ride a bike.
Seems like a bunch of excuses from people that do not and can not take responsibility.
And yes they shouldn’t drive into work with a car that is not road worthy there are other ways and they shouldn’t drive until the car is in proper working order.
Ashley says
And Eric furthermore it is no concern of mine that a family is in dire straights. Whose fault is that? Mine? I think not so I shouldn’t be subjected to harm because of the carelessness of others.
Poor financially planning or lack of employment or education is the individuals problem not mine.
Eric says
Your lack of empathy towards others just illustrates what a wonderful human being you are, Ashley.
Ashley says
It’s not lack of empathy, it’s lack of leeway for excuses and for people not taking accountability.
Eric says
It’s 100% clear what it is, Ashley. It’s your thought process, so it should be how things are.
It’s also 100% clear that if you wound up on the other side of the argument, you’d be decrying the exact positions you just took.
But hey, it’s the 21st century, hypocrisy is in.
Ashley says
I have been on the other side but I never once thought that I should get a “pass” because I had less and wasn’t able. Instead I worked hard, got an education and gave myself a leg up in life.
That’s what people need to do instead of always saying “I can’t because….”
Haha says
She’s out of touch with herself. She thinks she has it all figured out but she wants to sound like she’s knows more than she really does.
Ashley says
Good I wish they could do more of these more often. Hopefully they will get lots of drunk drivers, uninsured motorists and people with no drivers licenses.
Get all the people that do not abide by the law off the road and impound their cars no matter how minor the offense. They give way to many chances.
PALMDALE661 says
Ashley I agree but the city allows the Palmdale Sheriff Department or vise versa to have like 5-7 DUI checkpoints throughout the year..they do need more theres alot of DUI drivers lately
Ummm.... says
“…and impound their cars no matter how minor the offense.”
Really? No matter how minor? A burned out taillight = impound the car? A headlight is just slightly askew in its aim = impound the car?
Would you like to rephrase that overkilling bumper sticker mentality statement?
Ashley says
No they should impound no matter how minor the offense, it is the owner/operators responsibility to make sure that the vehicle is in safe operating condition and that it is road worthy.
No matter how small the offense.

You sound like an unfair person ashley

Dave Otis—Ashley has major anger problems. Read her other comments and you will see just how mean she is. She made a comment about one of the pictures of a woman and said she looked like Bozo the clown.
Ashley says
How is that being unfair? You don’t follow the law/rules and then you are punished for it seems pretty fair to me.
Greg says
Ashley, your idea of impounding over ‘fix it’ ticketable items is draconian and unfair.
Cars have vibrations, especially around the AV on these badly maintained roads. Light bulbs burn out unexpectedly. License plates can come loose, same with mud flaps, wires, and other items. Windshields can be cracked on a drive across town. Lights can go out of adjustment.
This is why the ‘fix it’ ticket is there, it is not a mere warning, there is a fee that goes with it even if the item is fixed.
Ummm.... says
Ashley, that draconian position leads not to order, but anarchy. A lack of balance in application of law has proven historically to lead to violence and rebellion.
Perhaps you should look further into your position and reconsider where it leads.
“If punishments be very severe, men are naturally led to the perpetration of other crimes, to avoid the punishment due to the first. The countries and times most notorious for severity of punishments were always those in which the most bloody and inhuman actions and the most atrocious crimes were committed; for the hand of the legislator and the assassin were directed by the same spirit of ferocity, which on the throne dictated laws of iron to slaves and savages, and in private instigated the subject to sacrifice one tyrant to make room for another.” – Cesare Beccaria, 1764 (one of the influences of our founding fathers in crafting our country)
