I was Troy’s 5th grade teacher. I remember this young man like it was yesterday. I am truly saddened by this. Troy, you will be sorely missed!
Kevin says
Hey. I remember walking back with Troy after getting dropped off from the school bus. This is just beyond shocking.

When did it become so easy to take a life? The only thing I know about this kid, is he’ll never take a another breath. Everybody on here complaining how bad the AV has became. Stop wasting your energy on the comments you leave on this site. Go out and start some peaceful anti crime, and anti violence movements. People can easily say anything, but it’s your actions that make those words true.
This is a saying I heard that fits some of the people commenting
“I wish closed minds, came with closed mouths”
What gives us the right to judge anybody?
tm86 says
Wow people are so quick to judge on appearance these days.that is what is wrong with society…so if I have tattoos I am going to jail…wtf..and really does it matter what race they are or how much money they don’t have they are considered to be criminals…so sad for what some of you think…really?please reconsider what you say and think about someone

Is it an improvement over Sections 1-7?

@William…A young man lost his life and you have to make some flippant comment!
William says
You gave yourself the perfect username, jerk.
Why didn’t you reply to the comment above mine which I was replying to?
sherrill hubbard says
He was born here . he is not on a section 8 anything. His parents own their home thank you and yes the name is Troy Filinow . He is a friend. And he is white so start the race crap. We still do not know what he was doing there or why he was fighting.
ANNON says
My condolences to all who have been touched by this tragic event.
PLEASE, FOR TROY…. STOP THE VIOLENCE.
Jason says
Thank you Sherrill. I don’t know if you remember me, but I was his his brother. I feel like people judge the situation, and blame parents. My mom and my step dad are both really good parents. Its not about how you were raised in some cases, its about where you were raised and the crowd you grew up in.Troy was a good kid, and just got mixed up with the wrong people.I moved from the AV a couple years ago and just last year tried to get him to move with me just to get him away from all of that.. I wish I would have tried harder to get him out here with me. Those chances are gone now though… He was too young, I love you lil bro!
Nancy says
Jason and Sherrill people can be ignorant and judgmental at the wrong time, but I am praying for you all, Troy did not deserve what happen to him and that person was a real cowered for what he did and I’m praying they find him soon. May he rest in peace
ANNON says
Jason…. this happened so close to my home. I want to offer my condolences. Every time a young person in our community passes for what ever reason, it is just a tremendous loss to us all. We are a small community. A family. Brothers and sisters. I’m so sorry Jason, I’m so sorry :( May god bless you and your family.

I hadn’t seen him in years, but your brother was always so sweet to watch my parents’ animals while they traveled. He was a good kid. He will be missed greatly by so many!

Jason I’m truly sorry for your lost I meet Troy 2 years ago he was such an amazing person he didn’t deserve any of this.. if it not to much I would like tho know where you guys as his family were plaining on bearing him
AdolphOliverMuff says
if your kid is listening to Gangster-rap, wants or already has a couple of tattoos, and runs with a crowd that you wouldn’t want to live in your neighborhood, you may have a THUG on your hands and he probably will be in prison in the next few years.
You have no excuse, low income, single-parent, too many kids, you need to take responsibility and move somewhere – another neighborhood – where they might be able to make a fresh start.
WOW says
I cannot believe the ignorance that you are spewing. My husband listens to gangster rap and has tattoos. Guess what? he has never been in trouble, is a kind-heartened, giving member of our society. It’s people like you that is wrong with our society.
Dave otis says
My husband is a sheriff and has a bald head tattoos and listens to rap music does that make him a thug? People like you should move to the south or something . Your and example of ignorance at it’s finest. “Typical av person”

I’m in my 60’s, listen to rap and have tattoos. I am a loving, generous, productive member of this society.
Johny Chingas says
To all you people who replied to the first comment. YES, YOU HAVE OR YOU ARE A THUG. That is the other problem that We have in our Society now. You never accept that you guys have a problem. PERIOD.
You have tatoos…Sorry.. Signs of a NOT a good Citizen..And listening to RAP music.. Even worst…It is what is.
ron says
…”you guys” have the problem …lofl ….
this guy is more of a problem than 10 copys of every rap album, and every tatoo convention ..ever ..combined
Alyssa says
First of all, just because a person has tattoos & listens to rap it does not make them a thug! I’m a female in my early 20’s who has tattoos & listens to rap, that gives you the right to call me a thug? Secondly, having tattoos & listening to rap isn’t the problem, the problem is people like YOU who go around judging people by their looks.
I didn’t know having tattoos & listening to rap made me “NOT a good citizen” and as far as I know it isn’t against the law.
michelle says
I am a retired science teacher, taught chemistry for 13 years in public school, before that I got a degree in microbiology from University of Hawaii and worked there in cancer research. I have tattoos. I am a productive citizen and have never been involved with the police.

You have created your own stereo-type in your ignorance.
Have an open mind and think before you post.

YOU SOUND MORE IGNORANT THAN YOU PROBABLY EVEN REALIZE…. AND THAT RIGHT THERE IS THE REAL PROBLEM, REFFING TO THAT VERY NARROW MINDED AND SHALLOW WAY OF THINKING IN WHICH YOU POSSESS … BY STATING THE COMMENTS THAT YOU HAVE YOU DISPLAY TRAITS OF AN EXTREMELY WEAK MINDED INDIVIDUAL, WHO WOULD RATHER FALLOW THE STEREOTYPICAL ILLUSIONS THAT ANY PERSON WHO PARTAKES IN CERTAIN ACTIVITIES, OR WHO’S PHYSICAL APPEARANCE DEPICTS A LESS THAN “STRAIGHTEDGE, BY THE BOOK” WAY OF DISPLAYING ONESELF, MUST BE A PERSON WHO CAN’T POSSIBLY FUNCTION “ACCEPTABLY” IN SOCIETY, AS FAR AS WHAT IS CONSIDERED SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE, IN THE EYES OF CONFORMITY… IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE ARROGANT ENOUGH TO PASS JUDGEMENT ON ANOTHER PERSON OR GROUP OF PEOPLE, THEN AT LEAST PASS SAID JUDGEMENT BECAUSE OF A PERSON OR GROUP OF PEOPLE’S ACTIONS, NOT WHAT IS ONLY SEEN ON THE SURFACE….
IgnorantOnes says
You crack me up! I have lots of tattoos, a bald head, practice MMA, and love rap music…yet I manage a team of Business Analyst’s for a large corporation. Never have committed a crime, other than a few traffic violations. Born and raised in the A.V. until I moved to Ventura County about 6yrs ago. I personally watched that valley change over the years. I must admit, my new location isn’t perfect by any means, but my family and I feel much safer in our new area. None the less, the A.V. is still my hometown and will always have a place in my heart. There are still plenty of good people out there. Anyhow, before you go judging others, you should work on your ignorance…as well as your spelling. You clearly are not the individual that should be classifying others.
foodforthought says
Dear Johny Chingas: I have crossed paths with people like you many times over the years, and know that your stunted mind set is actually a poor attempt at portraying yourself as a solid citizen, when in actuality it is you that is the real thug. Your cover is blown Johny Chingus.

Jason says
Lol or maybe they were wanting to rid the area where they live of crime so citizens here can live a safe life.
666 metal for life says
Lmfao at all of you. The issue isn’t whether or not you listening to rap is making you look like a thug. The real issue here is why you all listen to crappy garbage music in the first place. Seriously if someone is driving next to me blasting that garbage out of their car speakers, I’ll turn up my speakers even louder and blast hardcore satanic death metal so it’ll drown out the crap from your speakers. Metal > rap any day

Your comment made me think a saying I heard.
“I wish closed minds, came with closed mouths”
Hawk says
Most comments are placing the blame on the rise in crime – especially violent crime – on the migration of Blacks and Latino peoples from Los Angeles. Be careful, there is a growing trend to scapegoat and view all “others” with contempt without proof. Note: the A. V. Times does not identify the origin of criminals. Popular sentiment can never be accepted as scientific fact. My take on the rise in violent crime, here, as elsewhere, has more to do with the recent ( decades long) movement to eradicate God, and prayer, from schools and governmental functions and buildings. Many young people of this generation knows not God, much more, few can recite the 10 Commandments; specifically, THOU SHALL NOT MURDER. As outlined in a book – THE HARBINGER – the author recounts the 1789 inauguration of George Washington, first U.S. President, wherein he took his oath upon a bible and dedicated the newly formed country and government to God. Furthermore, he warned that if this country ever turned against God, then it would suffer judgment. He took this oath and made this consecration to God, not at Washington D.C., but at the then nation’s capital – today we know it as “ground zero”.
Desert rat says
You don’t need a god to know that killing someone is wrong. In fact, most murderers are very devout. Your ramblings are idiotic.

I alway wonder how many of these shooters pay a Mortgage or pay rent with the rental agreement in there names. Where is there address and who do they live with. Talk to me.
elle says
It’s obvious that they don’t have anything better to do. If they had a job to keep them busy they wouldn’t be out there trying to see who they can vandalize or kill next. It’s damn shame parents don’t teach their kids right from wrong at a young age. Then they are half groen making stupid decisions. RIP to this young man

In a 5 weeks time span. So glad crime is down!
Shadow says
I’m sure when the next crime stats come out, crime will be down again. It’s not just the AV; everywhere crime is down statistically and everywhere the people report that it simply is not true. The police and mayor manipulate the stats so they have a talking point. It’s all bogus.
John says
Thank God the crime rate is down. LOL,LOL,LOL!
Dee Dee says
Left the AV 11 years ago today. New city has had 1 that is one shooting in the last 2 decades. And that occurred in a bar from tourist passing through on their way back home. Our cops have nothing much to do but stop people speeding. And yes we gripe that they need more to do. But when reading something like this. I am forever grateful for our cops not having anything to do.
Johny Chingas says
If you left the AV for a better place? How come are you worry about the AV?, Maybe do you want to come back here? Maybe you can’t come back here anymore because you were one of the ones who commuted a crime in your teenage years? Who knows?
William says
@Johny Chingas
I’ve noticed many former residents that comment here trashing the Antelope Valley
But, notice that they almost never say what city they moved to or even which state as though we are gonna track down someone with a username of ‘Dee Dee’ or ‘nevermind’ or whatever.
One person did name a city he moved to last year and I looked up its crime stats. Well, they weren’t that great.
Bottom line. Some people can move to a crummy city and be happy regardless while other people can move to the ‘Best City in the USA’ and whine and complain like they have always done.
Even though Dee Dee moved away 11 years ago, she’s still complaing about the Antelope Valley. Why? What’s really bugging her?
Dee Dee says
We moved due to a job transfer to Buckley WA. Born and raised in the AV for the first 40 years of our lives. And we still have children there so YES we still worry about home and our children. Many many friends still there. Saw that valley go from quiet wonderful place to raise our children to what it is today. But like my mom, who was raised there also, used to say Los Angeles can only come this way because there is no room for it to go any farther south. And no I never committed a crime in my youth, outside of speeding and cruising the Blvd, and maybe a party or two in the desert. I graduated from QHHS, JW Jr Hi, Sierra Elementary, and yes my name is Dee Dee. And I never said I left for a better place just happened to find it with the transfer. And Buckley WA is less than 30 mins from Tacoma WA and less than an hour from Seattle WA. I come home to visit the grandchildren quite frequently. And I NEVER trash the AV. It will always be home. But this isnt about me this about the crime in the AV and the needless taking of another person’s life. What makes people think it is their right or responsibility to take another’s life???
foodforthought says
William…You can’t even interpret the meaning of a comment! Dee Dee wasn’t trashing the A.V., and do you really have to mock someone’s name? You must have a metaphorical belt you put a notch on, every time you antagonize someone. You must wake up in the morning and think, well, who can I be obnoxious to today?
DKeene says
wow.
mark says
I left Palmdale in 1997, it was pretty bad then. Trust me I knew people from Palmdale that were hardcore. Not everybody doing the crime is from LA. Like I said I left Palmdale in the late 90’s. I still love Palmdale, riding my bike up on Eagle Hill (behind tumbleweed school) before they put house there, even the parties in the deserts as a high school teenager. Trust me even in Omaha NE there’s crime and murders. A couple years ago, we had a murder everyday of month July here in the heartland of America.
JustMe says
Does anyone know who it was?

Yes I know the family and this is a sad situation.
Sandy says
Yes…I am a friend and neighbor..for 20 years. He was a good kid. And his parents are good people! They are devastated. We all are.
Justine says
My kids grew up with this young man. He was a good kid. He had a great heart. We are devastated to hear this news! May his family heal with time, and he may rest in peace. All this trash talk of the A.V. doesn’t matter, at all. The fact of the matter is that a young man lost his life, and his family is left with an irreparable hole. THAT is what is important.
Jason says
Yes, he was a good kid. He was my brother, and although I do think he got mixed up in the wrong crowd; he did not deserve this. R.I.P. little brother, you will be missed

Crime in the AV is above the national average:
http://www.sfrealtors.com/US/Neighborhood/CA/Santa-Clarita-Antelope-Valley/Antelope-Valley-Demographics.html#Crime
Often times the “crime is down” is focusing on larceny, arson, or using older statistics (2011, etc) but in 2012 and since there there has been spikes in violent crime:
https://www.theavtimes.com/2012/07/12/report-shows-spike-in-violent-crimes/
Anon says
It’s always something in the Antelope Valley. It disgusts me to the max.
open eyes says
U mean statewide! Violence is everywhere…been to LA lately??
Thomas says
Yes, violence is everywhere, but your statement minimizes this incident thus providing it a backhand ‘okay’. This is a rapidly growing problem here in the AV that didn’t exist before. We don’t live in LA, we live here. Many, if not most if us moved here to get away from the casual criminality of down below and I for one chafe when your “Oh well” attitude is the response to this type of occurence.
lorii says
LA shouldnt be that bad, we are getting the probs here, due to its cheaper here, crime is bad everywhere, even safe cities like Santa Clarita, a 19 day old baby was murdered by her father, after he raped her, its everywhere
valleygirl says
Send lots of Thank You cards for the Early Release Prison Program to Jerry Brown. He’s managed to completely destroy what normalcy was left in the Antelope Valley in less than 5 years.
Ehhh... No. says
@valleygirl: Nice try with another totally ignorant and irrelevant political BS statement.
Jason says
Actually valleygirl has a valid and relevant point. The father charged with raping and killing his daughter was an early release under AB 109. He violated his probation three times in 2014 and was never sent back due to stipulations in AB 109.The guy that attempted to kidnap the 13 year old girl in Santa Clarita, an early release under prop 47. These are just two of many people that were released early to go on to commit violent crimes because of bills signed by Brown.
JJ says
Well said
Obr says
We lived in LA for 3 years without incident. Within 1 month of moving to Palmdale we had our car stolen, twice. Over the next 9 years we had our house broken into twice, 2 bikes, 6 scooters, bike ramps, and a playhouse(!) stolen from our yard. I was also afraid to go running by myself after a few incidents of cars following me around the neighborhood slowly. And we lived in West Palmdale, the ‘nice’ area. We moved back down to LA 2 years ago and haven’t had any issues.
I liked a lot about Palmdale, especially the many sweet people that we grew to love, but their is definitely a crime problem that is specific to the AV :(
Shadow says
Crime is down bro. Look at the stats. It’s all in your head. Read the paper and you’ll see. The AVTimes wouldn’t report a bunch of lies, would they?

I agree, I was raised in Palmdale it was all I knew growing up. I hung around a tougher crowd, so I was caused a little bit of trouble back in the late 90’s. When I moved away from Palmdale. I noticed a much calmer things were in other places. It was weird but nice.
Greg says
Over 475,000 people live here. Overall our crime statistics are not all that bad, not great but not as bad as many other places.
