PALMDALE – The city of Palmdale’s Legacy Commons for Active Seniors will host its inaugural Black History Celebration next week entitled “Faith and Hope.”
The event will take from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, at Legacy Commons, located at 930 East Avenue Q-9 in Palmdale. This event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.
The program will feature oratories of famous African-Americans. The ceremony will be officiated by Betty Smith, and the mistress of ceremony will be Kathryn Wright. Bishop Henry Hearns will offer the opening prayer, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and the anthem “Lift Every Voice” by Ruth Knight. Guest speakers will include Cortez Bundley and Marcia Johnson.
The program will also feature:
- A talent and fashion show
- The Legacy Commons Line Dancers
- A presentation on President Barack Obama by Herman Brown
- The reading of the poem “Maybe” by Bruce Robertson
- The grand finale of “Reach Out and Touch Somebody”
The program was put together by the Legacy Commons Black History Month Committee of Delois Cade, Dorothy Carter, Charlene Coney, Betty Gaines, Marcia Johnson, Brenda Johnson, Ruth Knight, Lemozine Riddick, Betty Smith, Linda Smith, Valerie Smith and Kathryn White.
