PALMDALE – Palmdale City Manager Dave Childs has been selected by the Davenport Institute and the Pepperdine School of Public Policy School to serve as its 2015 City Manager in Residence on March 9 and 10.
Childs will be on campus in Malibu to offer students a glimpse into the challenges and rewards of a career in local government. In addition to a lunchtime round-table with students, he will meet one-on-one with students to discuss their plans for a career in local government.
“We’re excited to have Dave as our 2015 City Manager in Residence,” stated Pete Peterson, Executive Director of the Davenport Institute. “We started the program four years ago here at the policy school as a way of connecting our grad students with leaders in municipal government, and Dave’s reputation as a performance-focused city manager precedes him.”
The Davenport Institute for Public Engagement and Civic Leadership introduced the City Manager in Residence Program in 2011, as part of a collaborative effort developed by the California International City Manager Association (Cal-ICMA) to offer students in graduate public policy and public administration programs the opportunity to learn firsthand from some of the best city managers in California.
The city managers in residence share their experiences with the school’s Master of Public Policy candidates over a course of two days on the Malibu campus. In addition to a formal lecture, they serve as a mentor to students specializing in state and local policy, offering career advice and answering questions; addressing classes in the state and local policy track; and meeting with members of the school’s student chapter of the International City/County Manager’s Association (ICMA).
Prior to his appointment as Palmdale City Manager in April 2012, Childs served in numerous key leadership positions in local government, including service as the Assistant County Manager of Washoe County, Nevada as well as the City Manager in the City of South Lake Tahoe, California and additionally serving as the City Manager for the cities of Minnetonka, New Brighton, St. Anthony and Blue Earth in Minnesota.

Palmdale has had a history of good city managers. They don’t get much attention but we can see the positive results.
