PALMDALE – Mayor Jim Ledford, Palmdale Chamber Board Chair Laura Gordon, and the Highland High School Marching Band and ROTC helped open the new Walmart Neighborhood Market in Palmdale Wednesday morning.
Located at the corner of Rancho Vista Blvd. and Town Center Dr., the new 24-hour store is Walmart’s first neighborhood market in the Antelope Valley.
It will provide Palmdale residents with low prices on a broad assortment of products and services, including fresh organic produce, meats and dairy products, frozen foods, dry goods, cleaning products, pet supplies, a pharmacy, and health and beauty products, company officials said in a press release.
Customers can shop for additional items, including toys, gifts, electronics and home decor, on Walmart.com and obtain free shipping to the Palmdale Walmart Neighborhood Market for pick-up, according to the press release.
“We are in a wonderful community, providing 24-hour quick, convenient service with everyday low prices,” stated store manager Colleen Webster, who began her Walmart career in 2012 as an assistant manager.
The new store is approximately 41,000 square feet, and it employs up to 95 full- and part-time associates, according to the press release.
The grand-opening celebration Wednesday included presentations of $5,000 in grants from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation to local community groups.
“A Big Family Welcome” Saturday, March 7
The new Walmart Neighborhood Market will host “A Big Family Welcome” for the Palmdale community this Saturday, March 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The celebration will give customers a chance to meet Webster and enjoy fun family activities such as face painting, cupcake decorating and free food samples while supplies last.

Well, Walmart showed its true colors. They presented a “check” for $1500 to the Highland High School Marching Band, for helping “open” the store, then later told them, “sorry, you are not getting any money.” What a scam!!!!! Show but no substance. That is despicable behavior!!! Nothing more than a publicity stunt!

They claim they’re a “neighborhood market”, but still have all the business practices of a big corporation. CANNOT trust them.

RE: Whole Foods
I emailed Whole Foods yesterday regarding looking into a WF in Palmdale.
This morning, I received a personal reply that my request will be forwarded to the appropriate department.
I would paste the reply here but their policy is to not allow distribution of the email without permission.
I also heard from someone who works for the City of Palmdale and they have been looking into a Whole Foods and other stores already.
I’ve only been to a WF once, ever, and it’s not a high priority for me. I checked out the website for Haggens coming to Palmdale soon and they sound like a smaller version of WF.
So, maybe that will suffice for those who want that type of grocery store. Then, we’ll have it all, Walmarts, Trader Joe’s, Haggen, Aldi, Von’s, Albertson’s, Vallarta and Smart n Final for a variety of choices. There are others, I’m sure.
I replied to the lady who emailed me that Palmdale will have a High Speed Rail station in the future with the expected growth and the desire of many residents to have a Whole Foods Market here……eventually.
Vel says
I agree with Mike. Why did the city feel they needed ANOTHER grocery store when you’ve got Vons and Albertsons about a mile in each direction from this new store? Doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense.
William says
My understanding is that that property was zoned for commercial when Rancho Vista was first developed. If homeowners were vigilant, they would have checked it out. My disclosure material when I bought north of Lake Elizabeth Road said there was a landfill south of it over a mile away and other stuff.
I don’t think the city could do much about who bought it to put in a grocery store if that was the original idea.
Anyone know something else.
John says
William, yes that land was zoned commercial when Rancho Vista was created. A grocery store meets all the zoning criteria. Cities can and do their best to develop viable business zones and attract busineses. In the end it is the businesses themselves who make the decision to invest in a particular approved area. A city cannot discriminate and stop a particular business if that business meets all the legal requirements. If they do, they will get sued and they will lose.
William says
Thanks, John
I was just going from memory from what I heard when the Walmart store was first announced.
So, my memory still works. Now, where are my car keys?

When my younger sister and I were little kids, we were whining about WANTING something. I don’t recall what it was. But, here’s what I remember like it was yesterday.
Our mother finally got fed up with our whining about WANTING whatever it was and stood in the living room and repeated in a loud voice….
“I WANT A MILLION DOLLARS. I WANT A MILLION DOLLARS. I WANT A MILLION DOLLARS”.
It shut us up and we laughed. It was quite memorable and taught us a lesson about whining about our WANTS. It’s mostly useless………….unless one takes action, makes requests of people who can do something about it and so on.
Has anyone here who WANTS a Whole Foods contacted Mayor Ledford or any of the city council members and made a request that he/they look into it or gathered signatures or done whatever it takes? Or, even contacted Whole Foods or other businesses.
A couple years ago, when I ate at BJ’s Brewhouse & Restaurant frequently, they had a web address on my receipts and an offer for a free dessert or appetizer if I filled out a survey. So, I did several times. At the time, they only had a steak and ribs on their meat entrees menu. I suggested a couple more items such as pork chops. Lo and behold, many months later, pork chops appeared on the menu. I don’t know if it was solely because of my suggestion or maybe many other people suggested the same thing.
However, I didn’t write a comment on the AV Times saying I wanted pork chops on their menu because something told me that would be useless.
I wanted a high speed rail station in Palmdale and when the HSR Authority decided to consider the alternate route through the Grapevine route, I went to 2 HSR meetings, 1 in Bakersfield where I spoke to the panel along with other supporters and another meeting in Los Angeles. I wrote letters to the Valley Press addressing some of the idiotic things opponents were repeating about the high speed rail.
But, I got what I wanted in the end and not simply by ‘wanting’ it. Mayor Ledford wanted the Palmdale station and, boy, did he work at getting it.
I WANT more annual rainfall in the Antelope Valley so I don’t have to water my lawn. (sarcasm alert)

William says
@Tom
It appears no one really wanted it.
It was zoned for commercial and Walmart bought the property.
What was the city supposed to do?
William says
I checked out the new Walmart Neighborhood Market today.
It’s nice and new, nothing fancy. I was surprised at how big it was once inside because it doesn’t look that massive from the parking lot.
The lot was almost full so I’m guessing someone from the immediate vicinity shops there.
And, I’m pretty sure many Rancho Vista residents shop at the Walmart on 10th Street West (in the middle of the night so no one sees them)
All in all, I would think that if you lived close it to, it would be less of a bother than the noise from the Rancho Vista Freeway. I hate driving that stretch of road. It’s through an almost entirely residential area but everyone drives likes it’s a racetrack.
There are other even busier 4 lane roads in the AV, but that one is the worst for some reason.
Kay says
I DO NOT like Walmart. People have been tricked into thinking that their groceries are less expensive. WRONG! Winco is a far cheaper (with just as good, or even better) products as Walmart. It is far cleaner both inside and outside. The employees have part ownership in the store, so they care about customer service. Even on their slowest of days, they usually have a lot more checkers than Walmart has on their busiest days.
I am glad they put a Walmart in Rancho Vista, and I hope they get one in Quartz Hill, too. Now the people who travel from those areas to shop at one of the other Walmart stores will see what it is like to have one of these disgusting stores in their areas. I know that some people will shop at Walmart no matter what, but for those of you having a choice, DO NOT shop there. Maybe if they lose enough business, they will close shop. Not only is there a lot (I’m not saying ALL of riff raff that shop there, a lot of the employees leave something to be desired as well (not ALL, once again). Many of them are rude and act as if they could care less to help customers. A lot of them don’t even look appropriate to be employed (not ALL, one again) i.e., tattoos all over, body piercings galore, etc.
For those who have seen the movie “It a Wonderful Life,” and remember “Potterville,” we are becoming “Walmartville.” I have lived in Lancaster for almost 50 years, and it is sad to see what the Antelope Valley has become.

Hello Jim L.,
I wonder if you still reside in the East side of town. You know? Many of us paid a fortune for our brand new properties between 60th and 70th East, and on top of our regular property taxes, we paid Mello-Roos. Now tell me Jim, WHY CAN’T WE GET REASONABLE STORES ON THE EAST SIDE OF PALMDALE? Everything is on the West side of town, and I am not crying over What? Mart, I avoid it like the plague because of all the ghetto-licious people that show-up with PJ’s and slippers (and they smell like they haven’t wiped their butt in years) to shop. You know what you’ve given us? Section 8 “neighbors” in our 1/2 a million dollar homes neighborhood. These “neighbors” don’t work, smoke pot in the front yard, party like it’s l999 and don’t give a crap about our community. Jim, come by and see what you’ve done, we are a military family that can’t find a way out and to walk away is not what good people do. Even though most of our neighbors decided it was best to let their homes foreclose than to live next to these “neighbors”. I travel all the way to Edwards to buy my groceries or visit Trader Joe’s once a week, that is a long commute to get food for my household, we already get up at 4a.m. to get to work, God forbid my “neighbors” don’t get their government checks on a timely manner. This is disgusting!!! What? Mart, sorry, Wal-Mart!!!!!!! C’MON.

You’ve heard the expression “If the mountain will not come to Mahomet, Mahomet must go to the mountain.”
You moved to the distance outskirts of Palmdale and are now whining that there aren’t the stores you want there.
Didn’t you notice that most of the shopping, dining, etc was on the west side when you moved out in the hinterlands?
Yet, you moved all the way out there and expect businesses to locate nearby for your convenience.
At least the folks who live in Leona Valley don’t pester us with those kinds of complains. I’ve never heard someone out there say they want a Whole Foods. They know what they go into when they moved far from Palmdale and Lancaster and like it that way.
Eventually, some businesses will go out your way but it won’t be like the west side in your lifetime.
Any questions?
ENOUGH says
@William
Actually William, I am complaining more about the Section 8 sweethearts than the stores. We’ve been accustomed to travel for our groceries and we like our home. I guess I am just tired of working my axx off for my PJ infested neighbors to stay home. Again, Ledford needs to drive by during the evening hours an see the sweethearts at play.
I agree, I am truly salivating to see who owns the section 8 properties around town and I want their names disclosed. Although I am certain they are investors who simply want their money and they don’t care about our community. When we rented our 1st property (East Palmdale), we took our time selecting our renters and we did this mostly for the safety and happiness of our former neighbors. (-:
Lastly, yes, I am familiar with the saying “If the mountain won’t come to Muhammad, then Muhammad must go to the mountain”. Now, can we ask the Section 8 sweethearts to move in with Muhammad? (:
pbr says
Ledford has nothing to do with section 8. Neither does Parris although he did declare war on it which did nothing but bring a department of Justice lawsuit. Section 8 is a federal government program that is handled by the county.
William says
@Enough
I was addressing your statement in all caps with the mountain/Mahomet reference.
“WHY CAN’T WE GET REASONABLE STORES ON THE EAST SIDE OF PALMDALE?
As for Section 8, I don’t think it’s appropriate to allow single family homes even with pools to be used with Section 8 vouchers.
Section 8 should supply decent shelter in apartments, condos, mobile homes, etc. unless there is a special need for a single family home such as a large family or someone with a disabiltiy. It should be the exception.
If the government is going to subsidize the rent for a landlord for a $1,700/month 5 bedroom home with POOL, it could subsidize 2 families in ~$800/month apartments. The program needs an overhaul.
Timmy says
Most of the retail establishments and better restaurants will be built on the west side of Palmdale for two reasons:
1) Because that is where the freeway is and the freeway will always provide foot traffic and sales.
AND…
2) Because that’s where the money is. The 93551 zip code has the highest median income in the A.V. and it also contains the population with the highest number of college degrees above the bachelors level.
If you wanted to enjoy the benefits of the west side of Palmdale, then you should have purchased your home there.
As it stands, the east side of Palmdale has everything they need on 47th Street East.
William says
Thanks, Timmy. The part about being close to the freeway has been written here many times yet people on the east side keep making the same complaints.
The part about the 93551 zip code having the highest median income and college degrees above the bachelors level, I didn’t know before. Mayor Ledford once told me that the median household income on the westside was around $70,000/year but I didn’t know that was the highest in the Valley.
As for people wanting a Whole Foods, they should move to a city down below where they can get the same size house for twice the money. They buy in the Antelope Valley because it’s affordable and expect high end retailers to follow them. Does that make sense?
Seriously, some people commented here a while back that a Whole Foods should have gone in there. If and when a Whole Foods ever comes to the Valley, it will likely locate somewhere around the Mall, if anywhere. Those businesses want the traffic and that is where it is.
Adam Chant says
2014 Household Income by Zip Code – aveconomy.org
Palmdale – $66,390
93550 – $51,165
*93551 – $90,642
93552 – $66,708
Lancaster – $61,996
*93536 – $82,609
93535 – $54,235
93534 – $47,163
*93551 and 93536 are the zip codes for Palmdale and Lancaster west sides respectively.
They have a combined population of 131,000 (of just over 312,000 total) residents and an average household income of over $86,000.
City Councils currently don’t have the ability to say who can and cannot locate a business in a given zone as long as that business meets all of the zoning requirements.
Cities should consider a company/density based zoning rule. Limit the square footage and quantity of a given company within the city limits and it could go a long way toward diversifying the retail landscape by limiting the number and size of retailers.
There is over 1 Million Square Feet of WalMart retail space within the cities of Lancaster and Palmdale. That’s not even counting the over 250,000 Sqft of empty buildings they out grew.
That’s 3.4 sqft of WalMart retail space per resident in Lancaster/Palmdale. Think about that for just a second… Every single resident of Lancaster and Palmdale could easily fit inside of our WalMarts. We could literally have a Flash Mob event where every resident went to a local WalMart and stood inside. And we would all fit..
I digress.. If there was a zoning code that limited the square footage of a given company based on some growth based metric then it could be considered fair and legal. Per capita limits would be one of best ways to control growth and not overbuild. With a little weight toward projected growth it would prevent any shortfall, but still allow for development based on demand.
Is that number 1 sqft/resident or 2.5sqft/resident? I don’t know, but it’s worth giving some serious consideration and creating zoning based on.
Kim Jong Ill says
In North Korea and Cuba that idea of limiting the square feet of a particular company would work. The best way to stop Walmart or any other company is simply not to shop there.
American Factfinder says
Not sure where aveconomy.org got the household income facts from, they seem a bit outdated. If you go to American Fact-finder at http://www.census.gov and use the 5 year estimates, mean household incomes are as follows:
93551 $95,655
93536 $82,640
Didn’t track down the other zip codes.
William says
@Adam Chant
93536 zip code includes Quartz Hill, Lake Hughes and Los Angeles County residents.
93551 includes Palmdale, Leona Valley, Desert View Highlands, Lancaster, Elizabeth Lake, Acton and Los Angeles County residents.
It’s not just the west sides of Palmdale and Lancaster exclusively.
jen says
93536 isn’t lake hughes or elizabeth…. we’re 93532
William says
@jen
Sorry ’bout that. I Googled city profiles for those zip codes and not the actual maps.
Quigley says
ENOUGH already! There are section 8 homes all over the Antelope Valley, east & west have nothing to do with it. The owners collect a nice rent check directly in to their bank, on the 1st of each month, and I do mean nice! So unfortunately that leaves pajama & slippers cruising all over this town east, west, north, south shopping & eating, giving back to the community our tax earned money! And yes, your biggest mistake was buying out on the far east dust bowl because that isall it will ever be, sorry !
William says
@Quigley.
The thing about Section 8 is that the landlords get the money but the renters get all the static.
Think about it. With all the cuts in social services proposed by republicans, why have they left Section 8 alone?
Why is it possible for an owner of a 5 bedroom, 3 bath house with POOL to receive Section 8 money instead of having to rent it on the open market? I’ve seen those type ads in the Valley Press classifieds many times.
It would be nice to see a listing of who owns what Section 8 properties in the Antelope Valley and publish their names, especially if they work for either city.
I’ve called the department that handles Section 8 and they aren’t very cooperative.

nice to see palmdale care more about corporations rather than true neighborhood markets. Why not bring Ben’s corner over to palmdale? $$$ – that’s why.
William says
@Mike
I’ve thought of that as well. I once asked the owner of the cafe a block west of Ben’s Corner in that shopping center why not a place in Palmdale?
Her answer was it’s too expensive. You see, property is cheaper in Lancaster than Palmdale and probably cheaper still in Rosamond. And, cheaper for a reason.
However, even though it’s more expensive, Palmdale does attract business that simply ignores Lancaster’s cheaper land and it’s supposedly ‘business friendly’ PR. Was Macy’s or Dick’s Sporting Goods going to locate in Lancaster? Where?
So, there are advantages and disadvantages. I doubt if a place like Ben’s corner could open in Valencia, for example.
There are little hole in the wall businesses around Palmdale in old neighborhoods, so it’s not all big, rich corporations. And, Lancaster attracts corporations like Walmart. So, there’s that.
pjb says
Palmdale, Lancaster, Littlerock, Quartz Hill, Rosamond, et al have no real power to keep a Walmart or any business out if the business in question meets all legal requirements. If they try to stop them because they don’t want them they will get sued and they will lose. The only reason why Walmart is not built and operating in Quartz Hill is because of a legal challenge on the environmental report. It may never be built because of that. If Lancaster didn’t want it there is little they could do. They do want it however.
William says
@pjb
Re: the Quartz Hill ‘Walmart’. I believe the property was originally zoned for residential single family homes and home buyers purchased their new homes in that area with that understanding.
The person who sold the property to Walmart waited the legal amount of time. Either he owned it or brokered the deal. I don’t know which.
Then, when he went on the planning commission helped change the zoning for Walmart. So, Lancaster did more than simply ‘want’ the Walmart.
I’m just writing this from memory, so if anyone has more accurate information about that shady transaction, please correct my comment.
BTW ‘sowhat’ I went to the location back when QH residents were protesting and joined in the protest while you did what?

Uh…yeah, that’s what the city and county governing boards do to the AV. And let’s not forget the board of realtors or the builders who continue to build while our existing properties struggle to inch back to what we paid for them pre-2007, and we have to ration water because they insist on over-building. That’s some nerve. They continue to screw it up, because that’s been the course for the past the past 3+ decades. Can’t wait to retire and blow this dump.
