LANCASTER – A 56-year-old pedestrian was hit and killed by a car while crossing a street in Lancaster Thursday night, authorities said.
The fatal collision happened around 8:49 p.m. Thursday, March 5, on Avenue L at 32nd Street West, according to Sgt. David Jennings of the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station.
“Preliminary information gathered at the scene indicates the driver of a silver 1997 BMW 328i was traveling east on Avenue L when he struck a pedestrian crossing south on Avenue L,” Jennings stated. “Several witnesses to the collision said the pedestrian paused in front of a car in the left turn lane for southbound 32nd Street West, and then stepped in front of the eastbound BMW.”
Jessie Patterson Sr.,56, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, according to Assistant Chief Ed Winter of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
Neither speeding nor alcohol/drugs appeared to be factors in the collision, according to Jennings.
Investigators are asking for the public’s assistance. Anyone who may have witnessed this collision is asked to contact Lancaster Sheriff’s Station traffic detectives at 661-940-8466.

The jaywalking is an epidemic here in the AV. I believe it’s caused by overpopulation. Plus many people don’t drive 1 block just to go to 7-11, etc. I’m always (almost) hitting someone on a dark street and wearing dark clothing. It’s freaky when you see parents with baby or small children. Are the city mayor’s having this horrible tragic event(s) recorded, and monitored? Has anyone checked out if there’s a pattern of some sort? Lately, more than 1 person is run over in the AV while jaywalking. Are there plenty of signals, maybe some speed limits need to be lowered…something has to be done asap.
Jude says
I live in OR & we just had a family of 5 crossing a busy street in the crosswalk & all 3 young children were killed. Mother was unable to attend the funerals of her children as she was still in the hospital. Police say that alcohol was not a factor but speed may have been (speed limit was 30 & he was going about 45 witinesses say). Yes I understand that the driver will have to live with this the rest of his life BUT what about the young family that lost their entire family?
momof1 says
Yes, it is tragic that someone died. And I feel bad for the individual who hit this man. He has to live with this. But
seriously, the laws are there to protect the pedestrians as well as the drivers. If Jessie had been in a crosswalk, and followed the signals, the chances of him being hit would be much lower.

WOW. I sincerely hope you do not have Children. That comment was filled with latent AND blatent Bigotry and hatred. We (Americans) need to STOP these ways of talking, THINKING AND TEACHING.
I truly hope you can become a small part of the SOLUTION, as apposed to continuing to purpetuate the problem.

The jaywalking problem in that area is ridiculous. I see it almost on a daily basis. I live right off of 32nd. There are always people crossing L when getting to and from the liquor store or 7 Eleven. There are times when they see cars coming and keep going thinking traffic is going to stop for them. At night there are people wearing dark clothing jaywalking making their visibility much worse. Pedestrians just don’t care out here.
h says
The sheriff should start handing out those j walking tickets.
Cali Palmdale says
H. They should but I asked a deputy once why they don’t ticket Jay walkers and he responded for what they just go to court and say they where ticketed because they are of color skin and judge dismisses case and all races use the same card now so why even waste paper If they won’t even pay.
As says
I agree!!
ditto says
me too!
james says
[removed] that put a damn cross walk there people are dying [removed] jwalking ticket
Bob says
They jwalk feet away from the crosswalk as well. Look at the Vons shopping center. There is a crosswalk a few feet away but people still jaywalk across from the Apartments there. They are just lazy and arrogant.
Cali Palmdale says
Be carful don’t try and beat a car you wont win,,,,, Last week I was on 10th going N corner of Rex Firm and the light is green for us my wife is driving and there come two F****n guys two white males one had on orange shirt that said NEVADA STATE PRISON walking like the world is theirs taking there sweet time man that piss me off Later that day at like 8pm going W on J I think by 25th or so East like 4 Black guys just running across the street on a red light for them green light for traffic N+E cars going fast had to step on brakes and one was walking slow had his pant down half way his A*s I dint know if he was walking slow Couse had Sh**T or why and then they wonder why they get run over Just Sharing and it has happened other times.

Chandra Stevens I do have kids and believe me i will walk to a crosswalk and will never teach them to jaywalk like I see so many teaching there kids otherwise. And the only hate i have is for people that don’t fallow the rules that’s why they where made so people wouldn’t get hurt. And all Americans like you say should start to teach there kids to respect laws and fallow rules teach them good in all aspects. And sadly A lot of kids are missing that there teaching them wrong how to be thugs bad kids steal gangsters how to wear there pants half way there A$$ there no respect.
Jop says
There is no more common sense, common courtesy of respect being taught to kids. They must also not have an example of what those things are at home. It’s really scary.

Steve says
Sorry for your loss. What a tragedy for you and your family. Prayers for you all.
Jerry H says
I’m sorry I was the guy who stopped traffic and helped him cross the road I thought he was safe because the driver in the number one lane had stopped for Jessie I went into the liqour store to get something to drink. I thought because traffic had stopped he was safe. Then my Fiencee ran into the store and said they hit him. I ran up to the driver who had hit him and asked him if he had been drinking he said no. I could not beleive what had just happened. And feel guilty I didn’t walk him all the way to the store. And people had the nerve to yell at me while I was stopping traffic so they would not hit Jessie. The street is dark and three people have died right there in the vicinity. I’m sorry for your loss and haven’t slept because I feel I could have done more. RIP Jessie
Gh says
Jaywalking is not ok. I have come across people and other vehicles stopping traffic for jaywalkers. They put everyone in danger. Follow the rules and the laws of traffic to avoid accidents as best as possible.
Cali Palmdale says
Jerry H you did your best but it seems like this man you where trying to help couldn’t cross by himself so why even J-walk even more dangerous. He was 56 yrs still a young man was he drunk why did he need help was he sick ? who knows but I can tell you one thing you should of told him its dangerous to cross sir walk down to the light crosswalk about 500 feet and you will be safer and who knows if you had helped him it would have been two not just one your one lucky man you feel bad but think of it as you where born again. No Offence to anyone.
Greg says
Used to live in that house. Saw a few collision aftermaths and deaths. A pedestrian crosswalk with light makes sense in that area since there are only marked crosswalks at 30th and then 50th but there are schools, and convenience stores/liquor stores right there.
Charlotte says
Crossing corner to corner isn’t j walking. And that’s a corner at 37th. A light at 35th. People are lazy and just cross where ever they want. I lived on 37th and rode the bus for over a year.
Just Saying says
You are correct, crossing corner to corner isn’t j walking. However, in the absence of a crosswalk, you don’t have the right-of-way.
Jme says
There are 3 lights between 30th and 50th. One of which is on 35th. Another light wouldn’t make sense. They need something though, 3 pedestrian deaths in just a couple years. It’s less than a half mile to go out of the way to cross at a light. I admit I’ve jaywalked there my self a time or two. Never again!
Greg says
I completely forgot they did put in a light on 35th, thanks for the refresher! Been a few years since I lived there and I rarely head over that way now.
NoAV says
Why do they always mention alcohol or drugs when most car accidents involve sober drivers?
Eric says
Because most of the commentary in this section would hinge on whether the guy was intoxicated or not when this happen.
Bunch of judgmental people around here.
NoAV says
Actually it would NOT hinge on the presence of alcohol or drugs. The presence of alcohol or drugs does not determine fault. Lay off the propaganda.
Steve says
It can hinge on the presence of alcohol or drugs. Not for just the driver but also for the pedestrian.
Eric says
I think you misconstrued what I was saying. I said the statement was included because in 90% of these articles, all the “locals” who just love to discuss things they don’t know about, would’ve implied that it was involved.
Victoria Sifuentes says
my uncle died almost 2 weeks ago because he got hit by a car while crossing… still trying to cope. I know what his family must be going through.. may my uncle and that man rest peacefully.. my condolences.
Brian says
“it gets better” – nice heartless comment seeing as how the family may be reading this. I’m sure the initial impression they want to have from the public is that their loved one killed themself. You don’t know the story so I would recommend zipping your lip until the investigation is concluded.
Bob says
Unfortunately it is a common occurrence in Lancaster where pedestrians like to walk in front of moving vehicles.
It gets better says
Sounds like suicide =,(
Don’t people understand, life has it’s good and bad. IT GETS BETTER!
My condolences to his family!
Sheilasho says
I just today was telling a gentleman that “says” he doesn’t want to live anymore that I believe God loves him and all his other children too much to send to hell when one commits suicide for whatever selfish or mental issues they may have. I believe true punishment cones when you face God and learn how special life really is, the reason why God gave it and his expectations of him and everyone else. The shame one would feel at the feet of God, to me at least, must be hell. Yes, things do get better.
Steve says
You two are Idiots!! The Family does not need to read this garbage you two are writing! Go talk about suicide on another blog.
confused says
How does it sound like suicide? Sounds like the poor man was walking across the street and got hit by a car. How do you get suicide out of an accident?
It gets better says
Merely because it STATES “Several witnesses to the collision said the pedestrian paused in front of a car in the left turn lane” HE STOPED IN FRONT OF THE BMW, but if it wasn’t suicide I apologize!
KayDee says
He paused in front of a car in the LEFT TURN LANE, which means the pedestrian stopped in front of a car that was going west. The BMW was going east. Obviously the car in the left turn lane was stopped for the pedestrian, and that’s why the pedestrian felt confident enough to keep crossing the street. It is quite obvious the BMW did not see the pedestrian and the pedestrian thought the BMW was going to stop for him just like the other car did. It was just an accident. But you people are jumping to conclusions saying the man tried to commit suicide. Smh!
dd says
The car in the left turn lane was not stopped for the pedestrian but stopped before completing the left hand turn because there was a car coming his way. The pedestrian kept going thinking everyone was going to stop for him. I ‘ve seen this happen way too many times. Pedestrians are jaywalking on a very busy street and assume everyone will stop for them. They are putting themselves in danger as well as motorists like the BMW driver.
Family Member says
Yes, apologizes here are necessary only for the insensitive, non-caring and judgmental attitudes expressed in your comments; all with these thoughts and statements need to apologetically bow on their knees in humility and pray for them self. Is any witnesses or you are professional therapists, mind-readers, living a dedicated life to God, or know Jessie Patterson personally. Can one say, without a doubt, his pausing in front of an automobile meant his mind was suicidal? Have we not all experienced times when we paused in our steps… when we forgot something, or to do something or to get something that was important? Can any of you who speculate, being judge and jury, say for certain this did or did not occur with Jessie when he paused and if he paused in front of that car? People are talking here, but do they know if what they are talking about is factual and true, need to seriously stop the messy gossip and those of you who know how to reach God, pray for our Family, and please pray for all involved families and friends. And, again I repeat, those of you who are bent on being inconsiderate to my family’s loss, please don’t forget to pray for yourself for a healing of your thoughts and for your obviously judgmental expressions.
