Car crashes into utility pole in Lancaster, driver killed [updated]

LANCASTER – A 21-year-old driver died after he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a utility pole late Sunday night in Lancaster, authorities said.

The fatal collision happened around 11:53 p.m. Sunday, June 28, on 20th Street East south of Avenue I, according to Detective Michael Politano of the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station.

“Preliminary information gathered at the scene revealed an adult male driver, and sole occupant of a Honda Accord, was traveling southbound on 20th Street East at a high rate of speed,” Politano stated. “The driver lost control of his vehicle, which collided into [a] street light pole.”

“Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in this collision,” Politano added.

The pole was knocked over and live wires prevented Los Angeles County firefighters from removing the man from his car until Southern California Edison workers arrived to cut power to the wires and take the pole off the car, according to Lt. Derrick Alfred of the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was a 21-year-old Hispanic male, but his name has not yet been released pending next of kin notification, coroner’s officials said Monday morning.

UPDATE: The driver has been identified as 21-year-old Kristian Campos of Lancaster, coroner’s Chief Craig Harvey told City News Service.

  10. First of all it is not even confirmed that it was a DUI accident “Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in this collision,” Politano added. A life is a life. This guy was an only brother to four sisters and had a son. We should thank God no body else was in the car with him and that he also didn’t hurt anyone else but himself. May his soul rest in peace. Best advice for those of assuming things is don’t… we never know who is next. Could be your son/dauther/sister/brother… it’s better if we just pray for all.

  14. I was the first person on the seen last night. And if you would have seen his friend screaming, crying, calling his name, and freaking out, you might, just might have a little more compassion. There is a mother, father, family, and friends out there who has lost their loved one to this tragedy. Not saying we can’t have a freedom of speech, but at least have respect for the dead. because some of these comments are just flat out rude and cruel. I didn’t even know these people, but my heart, prayers and thoughts still goes out to the family.

As much as I would like to give you all a piece of my mind, it’s not right , I simply hope this never happens to a close one of yours. There may may have been avoidable causes to his tragic death, but this was a friend and I’d like to reach out to his family with this message. He was a great kid, I would’ve liked to see him around more. My respects to his family.

  19. First it states a high rate of speed so this is a fact we know. Second it states that alcohol is factor, this we know as well. So when someone comments as to the safety and welfare of themselves or their family then yes whether you like it or not they have that right. It is called free speech. I am sick and tired of being nearly run off the road by a careless driver because they are rudely texting or looking through their car let alone driving under the influence of anything. For god’s sake people if you must drink don’t drive and if must drive don’t drink. Pick one or the other. Further if you do not want to see someones comment then just don’t read it.

    • Wow Jacob….Never rejoice (glad) that this young man lost his life. As careless as he may have been, His life was valuable. He was a human being. He made a bad judgement call. Yes, I am glad that no one else was harmed however He was and his loved ones are with heavy hearts. I bet if he was drinking, he wasn’t drinking alone so the moral responsibility lies on those who didn’t take his keys or drive him home.

Drunk and high drivers are selfish pricks who have no care for anyone else, let alone themselves.   25. Apparently, the police weren’t out at almost midnight, patrolling the streets. Ave I is one of the deadliest streets as far as accidents are concerned.
    I walk in that area, for my health, but now going to start walk out in the desert.

  27. There can be so many factors involved in this accident dont know why they have to say he may have been drunk or speeding.for all we know he could of fell asleep at the wheel after a late night shift .so sad rip

    • Given the damage to the car, it’s fairly safe to say he wasn’t driving anywhere near the speed limit.
