SUN VILLAGE – A woman was killed Friday afternoon in a single-vehicle rollover crash in Sun Village, authorities said.
The crash was reported about 4:40 p.m. on Palmdale Boulevard near 80th Street East, according to Lt. Ronald Shaffer of the sheriff’s Palmdale Station.
The woman was a passenger in the vehicle, which Shaffer described as an older-model Chevrolet Suburban-type SUV, that left the roadway for an unknown reason and rolled over.
She was pronounced dead at the scene, the lieutenant said.
The woman’s identity has not yet been released pending next of kin notification, coroner’s officials said Friday night.
The vehicle’s driver was transported to the hospital for treatment, but an update on the driver’s condition was not immediately available.
A 2-year-old child was airlifted to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles as a precaution, Shaffer said.
UPDATED 2.8.16:The deceased has been identified as Maria DeJesus Aguilar, 59, of Palmdale, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

Sad. High speed roadway with no pavement to spare on the shoulder. Doesn’t take much more than a blink to drop tires off into the dirt at a speed where that is near impossible to recover from.

When Googling this road I see a 55 MPH two way road with standard 15ft lanes, striped and recently graded shoulders of sturdy dirt (not sand). I don’t really see anything that would make this road less safe then any other rural highway. At 4:40 in the afternoon it’s light out, though a West bound vehicle could have a glare issue, it’s unclear which way this vehicle was going. My best guess here, and it’s a big problem on this road, is an oncoming vehicle was passing unsafely and caused her to lose control avoiding a head on.

I found the exact spot of the roll over in seconds on Google street view, The shoulder is not just of hard dirt but about 3″ of sand before hard dirt, look around and see the impressions left in the sand because it is deep.
