PALMDALE – The city of Palmdale has begun road construction to widen Avenue S between 30th and 45th Street East, and work is expected to continue through December 2016.
The project, Avenue S Widening Phase II (Capital Improvement Project 590), was awarded to the R.C. Becker & Son, Inc., of Santa Clarita at the Palmdale City Council meeting on Dec. 2, 2015.
The Avenue S Widening Phase II Improvements will provide three lanes in each direction from 30th Street East to 45th Street East and construct a Class I Bikeway on the south side of Avenue S for the full length of the project.
Improvements will also include traffic signals, road widening, raised medians, signing & striping, street lights, minor drainage improvements, landscaping, and other right-of-way improvements.
During the course of construction, delays along Avenue S from 30th Street East to 45th Street East will occur from mid-March through December 2016.
The project costs $11.1 million and is funded from the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Authority (Metro) and city of Palmdale local funds.
For questions regarding the project, contact R.C. Becker & Son at 661-259-4845.

It is interesting to watch this coming along….it almost appears as if these people don’t know what they are doing, last time I checked the curve was already constructed on both sides of the new road, now it’s all gone….that was alot of cement!

11.1 million???? what in the world!!! that’s a ridiculous amount of money for that little strech of road. I hope they do a better job than the one they did by 55th street, at least refinish the whole thing not just the new road.
Laughing says
Part of the cost is moving those very large utility poles.
Jason says
Considering how much work is going to have be done, $11.1M isn’t all that ridiculous. Relocating utilities, moving dirt, Grading, compaction, paving, concrete work etc. Man power, equipment, materials etc.
Curiosity says
Why wasn’t the project given to a company based in the AV?
Kevin says
Competitive bids for government projects have to be done following certain rules. They can’t choose one bidder over another for reasons like that. Likely the Santa Clarita company came in with the lowest qualified bid.
Truebrit says
$11.1 million is untenable for this job. Mark my words when the project is complete it will have cost the tax payer $15 million+. During the construction phase the contractor will use every trick in the book to charge more money.

Well, well somebody got it right. Can’t wait.
Tim Scott says
Whooooo!
Good project!

It’s about damn time!

Finally some money well spent on the eastside!
Tim Scott says
We’re getting a new park. Our streets, I think, are mostly in better shape than a lot of the west side (this Ave S thing is overdue, but in general the west side is much more congested and has a lot more streets that do double duty as storm drains). Overall, I think we get a pretty fair shake from the city.
What we lack is the appeal to business that the freeway originally gave to the west side. Now there is that ‘commerce begets more commerce’ effect. I think that if the people on the east side make a real widespread commitment to shopping on the east side unless there is really no option at all we will overcome that, in time.

Hell has frozen over, I actually agree with Tim Scott on this one!!

Bro Tim your 100% right I’m off of 30th street west and that road is like riding in a 3rd word country. From Rancho Vista to Ave N it sounds like you’re crossing a Bridge

On the road conditions, it seems like something has changed in how they build them. Back in the 80s, minor residential only needed maintenance every 10 years or so. Now the patches and seals they do don’t seem to last much more than a year. Roads like that section of S just seem to be eroding, after each storm, the holes are wearing deeper, and there’s a bunch of loose gravel from the holes, grinding at the remaining surface every time a car passes. They don’t seem to bother patching with proper sloping after work, so puddles form, etc.
On that section of S, hopefully it includes a signal at 45th, traffic leaving the kaiser offices and the school has real issues making the left turn across the near constant heavy traffic going both ways
