LANCASTER – More than 500 high school seniors were honored for their academic achievements at the 15th annual 4.0 Student Recognition Celebration.
The event took place Tuesday night at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds and was presented by Friends of the Antelope Valley Fair and the Antelope Valley Fair Association.
“Together with the A.V. Fair Association, we are once again excited to celebrate the accomplishments of our local students that maintained a 4.0 and higher GPA throughout high school,” stated Betty Smith, president of the Friends of the Antelope Valley Fair Association.
The event honored 560 seniors who will graduate with a cumulative 4.0 or higher grade-point average from 12 local high schools, including Antelope Valley, Desert Christian, Eastside, Highland, Lancaster, Littlerock, Palmdale, Paraclete, Pete Knight, Quartz Hill, SOAR and The Palmdale Aerospace Academy. Each student was recognized onstage and presented with certificates from local dignitaries. This is the largest number of 4.0 students honored since the inception of the program 15 years ago, according to organizers.

As a former teacher in the local high school system I am very happy to see this statistical improvement. I would like to see it made significantly meaningful for our community by showing how our 4.0 students compare with the avg SAT/ACT scores of the other 4.0 around the country. My hope is that our scholars would score higher than the average, perhaps being the best, given the aerospace environment saturated with STEM professionals, who are also mom and dad.

I’m a big fan of good grades. But I am going to suggest to you that you will find that the skills of a student are of somewhat less use to you once you get out into what is sometimes referred to as ‘the real world.
Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg didn’t finish college. Too much emphasis is placed on formal education.

I highly doubt a single person on this 500+ list is going to fail in the outside world. That’s the way this comment makes things sound. The practical realistic fact is: If you can get a 4.0 through high school, you’re going to get a good job and do fine in the real world. The Zuckerberg’s, Job’s, and Gates’s are the extremely rare exception to the massively general rule. The other 99.9% of students who don’t finish high school are working at low wage jobs, on welfare, or living off their grandma’s. That’s the truth. Remember we’re talking about students who didn’t finish high school.

Where I have a problem with is why is not Rosamond High School and Desert High included in this celebration by Friends of the Antelope Valley Fair and Antelope Valley Fair Association. Both of these schools are involved with the fair

So if we divide it by four year 26k/4 = 6500ish so rounding about 8%. That is much cooler. Of course if we factor in drop outs during the four years, the number goes up. But HOW did I miss those words????

That percentage is exponentially higher at Paraclete and Desert Christian with much much smaller schools. Their curriculum is also much harder too.

The grades should be weighted because there are discrepancies in getting an A in regular classes versus an A in AP classes and discrepancies in getting an A in regular math classes versus getting an A in advanced math classes. During my time in high school our Valedictorian had easy classes but didn’t amount to anything later in life.

They are weighted. I’m one of the students there, and while my weighted GPA is above 4.0, my unweighted GPA isn’t.

As a parent with a master’s degree I beg to differ and will gladly tell you that my daughter is on this list and can guarantee you that her work is not easy and spends countless nights past midnight doing work. Therefore, please give credit to all of these students that I am sure work hard.

I am sure the students did what was required of them for the grade they earned, and congratulations, but if nearly every student in every class in all 4 years of HS get an A in every course it seems odd. Normally some form of bell curve is present.
