LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted 4- 1 Tuesday to support legislation seeking to rescind the Trump administration’s executive order temporarily barring immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S. and suspending the county’s refugee program.
Supervisor Hilda Solis recommended sending a letter of support to Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who has sponsored the Senate bill, and the rest of the county’s congressional delegation.
The motion passed 4-1, with Supervisor Kathryn Barger casting the dissenting vote without comment.
Solis called President Donald Trump’s executive order unconstitutional.
“As home to roughly 3.5 million immigrants, Los Angeles must continue to stand for protecting the civil rights, safety and dignity of all people,” Solis said in her motion. “Our founding fathers established our nation on the principle of religious freedom, which is a First Amendment right in the U.S. Constitution. We should not be barring any group from entering the United States based on their religious beliefs.”
The administration and many of its supporters have argued that the executive order does not amount to a ban and does not target people based on religion, but is essential in protecting the nation’s security.
“The Executive Order is a lawful exercise of the president’s authority over the entry of aliens into the United States and the admission of refugees,” according to a brief filed by the U.S. Department of Justice in support of the order.
Lawyers on both sides of the issue were scheduled to argue their case to a three-judge appeals panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals Tuesday afternoon.

Supervisor Barger,
Thank you for continuing to be the voice of reason amongst your peers. I anticipate many 4-1 votes and I appreciate that you are not afraid to be the only dissenting vote as you represent your constituents.
Keep doing what you’re doing!
Tim Scott says
Had Barger commented when she cast her dissenting vote she would have said “The special interests who funded my campaign and who I anticipate funding me in the future have told me to vote this way, and I don’t really care what anyone else says or thinks.”
Les says
Though I’d like to think I’m special I’m not a “special interest” and supported her only with my vote. I have not told her how to vote but I chose her over the other candidates because I believed her votes would be more inline with my beliefs and so far she has shown me that I made the right choice. Imagine that, the little guy with no money or power being satisfied with his representative and it cost him nothing more than a vote!
Tim Scott says
Congrats. If your “little guy” interests occasionally align with the people who own Barger that will give you some highlight moments, no doubt. However, if you watch the big picture you’ll find that these protest votes in the long run just leave our district as the same last line of concern for the county that it has always been.
Uncle Sam says
ha ha, LA County has no authority over immigration, it is always been under Feds.
You guys are…
Tim Scott says
Given how you and your ilk always seem to believe that enforcing immigration law should be the job of local law enforcement I find this sudden shift of position hilarious…mostly because it demonstrates the cluelessness of your blundering about.
Uncle Sam says
Hi clown ) Talking gibberish again? Sober up, buddy!
Tim Scott says
LOL…if you think that’s an effective recovery from your mistake there, “buddy,” you’re the one who is drunk. I could find a half dozen comments you’ve made about various people who have no responsibility to enforce immigration law that you have bitched about for “not doing their job.” Yet here you are now, yammering about how LA County has no authority over immigration…apparently just so you have something to bitch about. Too funny!
Uncle Sam says
What are you even talking about?? You are insane my friend.
Only Feds can decide who can come to the country, and who can’t.
Locals have other responsibilities, such as transferring illegal felons to immigration prison after they do time in local jail, etc.
You really need to get yourself together, stop smoking whatever you smoking, get medical help, talk to someone who can help you. Your mental health is deteriorating fast, especially after elections.. Get better buddy. We worry about you.
Tim Scott says
If I feel the need for a mental health exam, rest assured I won’t be getting it from an anonymous reactionary like you.
Meanwhile, I doubt that anyone else fails to remember your many rants about how various government representatives should be fired for “not following federal laws”…the very “laws” that you just pointed out don’t exist.
Oh, hey, since you seem to want to “help” me and think you are qualified, how about dropping a line to timshatemail at gmx dot com? We could set up a meeting and you could deliver your diagnosis in person!

Having problems with short term memory Uncle?
Tim Scott says
Soooo Uncle Sam…you’re not only a clown, but high as well? Is that what you are trying to get across here?
Laughing says
The real Uncle Sam would be glad to have immigrants…. taxes baby, taxes! The more people there are to tax the more money Uncle Sam has to throw away on stupid things that do not help humanity to succeed and grow.
Uncle Sam says
Taxes, yes, but illegals never pay taxes, and they send all of their money back to mexico, that’s the problem. On top of it, they work for less – stealing jobs from legal citizens.
Educate yourself.
Tim Scott says
LOL…when someone says something that is obviously incorrect, and then ends with “educate yourself” it is one of the funniest combinations the internet has to offer.
Uncle Sam says
You are funny and obviously incorrect, buddy. You are.
Laughing says
All illegal immigrants do pay taxes. Sales taxes. Many pay employment taxes, unfortunately using a citizens SS number. Yes much of the money ends up going to their families back across the border, families with no other income. Our minimum wage or below jobs are a boon to the extreme poor.
As to educating myself, I have worked side by side with illegals in the fields picking produce. Have you? I have known illegals that follow the laws better than citizens do, the reason, they do not want to call attention to themselves and be deported. Wish I could deport the idiots running stop signs and passing me on double yellows this morning, both drivers were really white looking, like me. Jobs are limited everywhere, due to several factors including population sizes, automation, changing work environments, and trade shifts.
If you feel like arguing, let us do it with as much respect, hands on experience, and facts as we can.
Uncle Sam says
“Many pay employment taxes, unfortunately using a citizens SS number” – That was the key sentence in everything you said. That is absolutely correct – many use stolen identities, which is fraud, others ( the most ) simply work for cash and aren’t paying income tax, which is also a fraud. I am an immigrant myself, worked with immigrants a lot. Many I knew were making up to 60K a year, never bothered paying income tax, but were able to build huge villas in Mexico. All that is wrong IMO.
Peace.
