Lancaster woman fatally struck after getting out of wrecked car on 14 Fwy

PALMDALE – A 25-year-old woman was struck by two vehicles when she got out of her car after it crashed on the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway Monday night, authorities said.

Reina Gonzalez of Lancaster died at the scene of the collision, which was reported around 11:21 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, on northbound SR-14, north of Vincent Summit Bridge, according to a California Highway Patrol report.

Gonzalez was driving a 2016 Toyota Corolla northbound on SR-14 when the vehicle crashed for unknown reasons and became disabled, partially blocking the HOV lane, the CHP report states.

Gonzalez got out of her car and was standing next to it when a 2016 Jeep Cherokee collided with the car, according to the CHP.

“[Gonzalez] was struck, sustaining fatal injuries, coming to rest within the No. 1 lane,” the CHP report states.

Gonzalez was then hit by a northbound 2014 Nissan Sentra, the CHP report states.

The Nissan Sentra’s driver, 25-year-old D. Farnsworth-Toledo of Lancaster, sustained no injuries in the crash.

The Jeep’s driver, 61-year-old James Montgomery of Lancaster, was transported to Henry Mayo Hospital with minor injuries.

A juvenile female passenger riding in Gonzalez’s car suffered major injuries and was transported to Palmdale Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to Children’s Hospital,  Los Angeles, according to the CHP report.

  1. WHY cant this be what it is ? An accident, tragic and sad and for the families of the deceased its the beginning of a nightmare. Why is it you have to tear things apart and come up with the answers the way you all see fit to do. I hear there is a shortage of officers why don’t you know it all judgemental heartless foolish haters get out there and apply. does anybody have any compassion for these human beings that are no longer here. do you care about their families? you are just anxiously waiting until the next accident so you can start bashing more dead people. Why cant you sign your names and phone numbers at the end of these masterpieces? You are all lowlife, bored cowards with too much time on your hands and you love to write comments so you can look at them with pride. This poor girl, the poor drivers who hit her, they left home for the day never expecting the outcome to be this. I’m sure that everyone of you has a squeaky clean record and would never break the law have never looked at your phone while driving, never gotten high when you were a teen and are model citizens in our community. NO you are not. You are an embarrassment. At a time like this these families need all the love and support they can get, even from strangers. I know this because I lost my sister 6 years ago in a horrific accident and haters like you came from everywhere in full attack mode. You should be offering to help, make some food and drop it off to the families. My dad hit a girl on a motorcycle years ago, her fault but he was in agony over it. He visited her every day for the two weeks she was in the hospital and when she was released he took all of us to meet her and her family. They were so grateful that he was around to help them thru it. They helped one another to heal. Do any of you pick apart fools care about the victims or just your lust for talking [removed]?
    You all talk about the tweakers and gangs and you blame everything on them. WHAT ABOUT YOU…..what shall we call you “The [removed] talking slanderers”, why not, then you can take your place in line with the tweakers, gangs, drunks and murderers. You are no better than they are.I am saddened beyond belief for these families and sickened by the hasty foolish comments of my fellow humans. You should all ask for forgiveness and pray for yourselves. There is good to be done, open your eyes and show that it can be done.

  2. Reina was one of my good friends in high school I can’t believe she’s gone. I remember she was one of the only girls that use to skate at the time. She was always moving with her family which was a hard childhood. But God is ready for another angel. Prayers for everyone may God bless us all.

It is devistating to all of our family as we mourn the loss of our beloved mother and daughter, sister and friend.I pray that everyone who has posted something on here find the strength to search for peace within themselves and ask for protection in all you do. We are not promised tomorrow! God comfort our family and help us in this time of grief.

  6. Tough thing to grasp we are always looking for reasons and rationalities why things happened and everyone all of sudden become experts in opinions. There is nothing that can be done at this point and no need to be mean and express negativity to already a difficult situation to all parties involved. My deepest condolences to the victims and their family as well as support for those involved in the accident who have to live with this nightmare for their rest of their lives and could only imagine how terrible they feel for what happened as expressed by the daughter of the driver.

      Yes for the other parties involved in this tragic accident may they find peace. The hardest part for them it’s a nightmare they will live with forever. I speak from experience

  7. Sadly, another reason to stay off your cellphones. People, especially 20-somethings continuously text, browse the web and are messing with Pandora or all sorts of music/media.

    We were at a fatal collision and on the crash victims cell phone a movie was still playing that they had been watching…while driving.

    People don’t realize how much road is travelled in the couple of seconds their eyes are off the road until they hit the center median, or drift off the road and overcorrect, or hit the back of another driver.

    • Have been thinking of getting an air horn and each time I catch a person looking at their lap just blast it at them to wake em up.
      This morning on drive in there were 3 obvious offenders and all three were riding the center line and starting to drift over it.
      When driving, one job, DRIVING. (otherwise go hire Uber/Lyft/Taxi/carpool)

        The article does not state it was a DISTRACTED driver collision, however; now days a cellphone has become just as bad as DUI. The CHP will not know for sure until they check out the cellphone usage. It’s way too common cause of some drivers (non- DUI) for striking objects, like dividers, other vehicles, road debris and motorcycle riders. This story is true tragedy for all involved.

    But please I see so many accidents on the freeway and people stepping out.
    Stay in your car.
    I was driving on the 14 fwy this morning. When i got to a turn on the carpool lane. Right away there was a car that crashed against the divider. The driver was out of the car. I almost hit the car i swirved right away.
    Which i almost hit the car on the other lane.

    Stay in you cars. This was an accident and no hit and run.

  10. My prayers go out to all involved. I was on the Southbound 14 coming from Lancaster to Acton. About 1- offramp before seeing this accident. I was encountered with a wrongway driver on the freeway; driving north on the southbound side. I immediatly slowed down and called 911. I was wondering if any new information has come to light about what caused the initial crash. If maybe the wrong way driver was involved or saw something. Once again my prayers go out to the loved ones of everyone involved.

  13. My husband and I almost hit a car in this same situation one night when we were heading to Disney. The car was a dark blue car that went into the wall in the fast lane. We came around the curve and couldn’t see it until the last minute. No flashers on or anything. Luckily he had just enough time to swerve around it. It is way to dark on Many parts of that freeway.

  14. That stretch of freeway needs lights! It’s terribly dangerous in the best of circumstances let alone when a car has been disabled! How about putting our high taxes to work and making our freeway safer!
    These tragic events may not have happened if drivers had the benefit of proper lighting and therefore more time to react.

    • California loves taking your money and not investing it where it should be. Such as lights on this freeway. It has a lot of dark spots and is extremely dangerous

    • I see just fine, at 65 MPH in the dark using my headlights. Normal headlights are not designed to help the driver at seeds much higher than that. Overhead lights can cause glare causing worse problems. Not to mention light pollution.

      The best solution is to slow down, and pay attention (all drivers have ONE job when behind the wheel, to be a driver paying attention).

  16. May God bless the families of the people involved in this accident. this Freeway is very dark and I have told my children to make sure to look out for cars on the side of the road. I am always concerned when I see them stopped with and without hazard lights on. Praying for the families.

    • Are you serious right now? The woman was blocking lanes on a dark freeway at 11:30 at night. The other drivers probably didn’t expect this so it was an accident. Lesson learned…it is safer to stay in your car until help arrives than get out on a freeway at night.

      • That should be common sense, I think she panicked and didn’t know what do to. Probably stood outside trying to flag down help or call someone. If you ever get into an accident, specially on the freeway and at night turn on your emergency lights and stay put. Best to get hit inside the car than out of it. Sad. Rip to those who died.

      • I know her personally & im 99% sure her daughter was in the back. As a mom the first thing she thought of was her baby & she most likely got out of the car to go & see if her daughter was ok or to get her. It’s not weather it’s common sense or not to stay in the car, it’s about the fact that she had another life to look after & worry about it, she can’t just sit there with the airbags clouding her face & her not being able to look back & check her baby physically. Idk if it’s bc I was closed to her but all these comments about not being a hit & run & about common sense make me mad. 2 freaken people ran her over after she got in a car crash like wtf, not 1 car, not 2 cars but THREE cars took her life away brutally.

        • not only can you not spell, Kat, but you also don’t have any common sense. let’s go through it more more time: if you are standing in traffic lanes at night on the freeway, in the dark, because you crashed yourself into the divider and then got out and stood in traffic, and someone hits you because it’s a freeway for crying out loud, it is your fault. and now her daughter is dead too- that’s also her fault.

          it’s not nice, it’s not pretty, it’s sad, and horrible, and tragic, but it was no ‘hit and run’. how exactly you think people were supposed to see her standing in the dark in the traffic lanes in time to avoid her makes me wonder if you have ever even driven a car. and if you have, you really shouldn’t be- because it’s obvious you know nothing about personal responsibility

          • Allie, accidents happen and we should respect that. Unfortunately two lives were lost and there is no one to blame. It could have been a car problem. I’m not justifying anyone nor saying it was, but it could have been. However, you will never know that. Instead of being concerned about playing a role in spelling bees you should start becoming concerned about what you say on the internet and how it affects others. You have no right to blame anyone or judge anyone.

    • Hey father name Micheal she wasn’t a great mom let me tell u that and herself I know her in person she usto go to arleta high and she was a druggy and never took care of her daughter she would go for days leaving her with my nieghbor she played stepmom to her when she was with her babydad

She was in my house all the time after work Marilyn is what she lived for.Marilyns dad never did [removed] for her,he can’t even help himself his homeless.   24. This is so tragic. My husband almost crashed into the car as well. He was driving on the carpool lane and said it was hard to see the crashed vehicle at night since the emergency lights were not on and it was disabled after the curved road. He swerved to the right lane when he saw someone waving a cell phone.

  25. I am so sorry for the woman and child and for the 2 drivers.. At night it is not easy to see in time to stop and accodent or stalled car in the middle of the road. It is important for those reading to be aware that staying in your car is safer than outside or on any part of the freeway.. This is so sad

She my sister and this hurts my soul my sister and my niece are no longer with us my family is in tears since the coroner’s came at 2:45 to tell me this feels like a movie all I wanted was to spend my birthday wit my niece she was only 5 and her birthday in on the 9th of march 3days after mines this isn’t right I’m [removed] broken…

They all took it hard. We are hoping the kids can celebrate Marilyns birthday for her on the 9th. If that is ok with the family.

  30. This sad to read ,but the jeep drive didn’t have brakes and see in front him ,I like to know his speed that 14 Fwy to fast , they need to ticket that Fwy needs cup all over up and down for a month 20 black and whites 24 /7 this shame

      How do you know the jeep had no brakes?
      How do you know the jeep was speeding?
      Why ticket a fwy?
      Why do we need cups?

      I feel sorry for the two drivers that ran her over! How upsetting that must be for them. It’s important to remail in your car while help comes… it could have saved her life!

        I’m assuming she had airbags all up in her face & maybe she couldn’t see if her baby was okay so she got out to physically check her daughter. She’s a mom, she freaked out bc of her daughter wtf. This makes me mad & idk if it’s cause I was close to her or what but it seems like you & other people are trying to find a way to justify the fact that she got hit TWICE.

    • Yes he had brakes and could see in front of him. That part of the freeway is dark and he couldn’t see her. He was doing the speed limit and happens to be a good driver. This was a tragic accident and trust me mentally he is not ok right now. My dad is a good man who would never do anything to hurt anyone, and knowing 2 people lost lives is hurting him than anyone ever know. To the family who lost their loved ones if there is anything I can do please let me know. And please know this was a tragic accident and the driver the jeep did not mean any harm to anyone. My prayers are with your family and with my dad and the other driver.

      • I was there and I barely missed hitting her. I spoke to your dad until your mom was able to get to him. It was not his fault. It was dark, her car was at an angle you could not see it because her lights were not on. I honestly do not know how I missed her. I immediately pulled over to call for help because once I avoided her I knew she would get hit. It was a tragic accident. I do not know why she initially hit the wall. I still hear the sounds of the crash in my head and I felt so helpless there was nothing I could do to help her.
