Man kills wife, self in Lancaster [updated]

LANCASTER  – A Lancaster man fatally shot his wife outside a neighbor’s home Monday morning before turning the gun on himself, authorities said.

The woman and her husband were both pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting in the 6300 block of Starview Drive, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies who responded to a medical emergency call found the woman dead of at least one gunshot wound to the upper body. They then found the man inside the couple’s residence with a gunshot wound to his upper body, according to the news release.

The preliminary investigation revealed the couple got into an argument before the shooting, said Lt. Rodney Moore of the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.

“During the course of that altercation, the female attempted to leave and went to a next door neighbor’s house. It appears that she was followed by her husband who was now armed with a firearm,” Moore said. “The husband shot his wife at least once, killing her at the neighbor’s house. The husband then returned to his own residence and shot himself at least once.”

“There were no other individuals inside the residence at the time of this incident,” Moore said. “It appears that the couple do have three juvenile children; however, they are with family members out of state so no other persons were injured.”

The names of the woman and man were not immediately released.

UPDATE: The coroner’s office identified the deceased woman as 35-year-old Jamie Matthews. The name of her husband, who was in his 30s, is still being withheld, pending family notification.

UPDATE: The coroner’s office identified the husband/gunman as 39-year-old Clyde Matthews.

  4. I have know Clyde for over 14 years and NEVER HAS HE EVER RAISED HIS VOICE NOR ACTED IN ANY TYPE OF VIOLENT MANOR TOWARDS ME !!! He was a friendly man a little to friendly … it’s very sad what has happened to all the ppl and children affected by this. For all the ppl being judgmental we all know in society today that ppl suffer from depression amd suicide rates are higher than ever. Clyde was always the type of person to walk away from an argument and literally disappear for a few days until he got over whatever the situation was. So I truly believe something was bothering him that caused him to do this … let’s all learn from this and try to be closer to our loved ones and not ignore signs of depression

I would be the last person to sugar coat [removed] or condone any nonsense from him. In the 21 years I new him he has never laid a hand on me or received any kind of financial gain from me. So if all you wanted was to make him look bad to others as well as his children and family you were not successful. Find recognition in some other way in life to make you feel better about yourself !!!!!

  6. What this family needs is the support of the community! The victim’s mothers work family is shocked and appalled by what this monster has done. They are the average family that feel betrayed by this selfish, monstrous act that has fallen on their footsteps!! Lord I hope you were with Jamie on her final moments as we know you look out for those that are under this duress and protect those that need HIS guidance.

    • As you should as well respect the family and children of not just the young woman’s family but his family and especially his children. They are not the one’s who pulled the trigger he is. So please don’t be a hypocrite. Yes Clyde was wrong. He was not God and should have not tried to play the role. It is not for anyone of us to judge it is for the good Lord too.

      • I’ve known this man for over 15 years.
        He was a little wild but never angry! He never cussed at me and never put his hands on me.
        It’s easy to judge a person based on an article or an event.
        We will never know the truth on what lead up to the end result.
        Although there def is no excusing the acts that occurred.
        My heart hurts for the babies and the families of both people. && her parents .. omg the pain they are all suffering.
        I am hurt, angry and confused and can’t seem to understand how or why.
        But it doesn’t change the love that I have built with him over the course of our years of knowing each other.
        To you all he was a Monster, and I understand that judgment.
        To me, he was a dear friend whom I will miss.

  11. It was very selfish on his end and very cowardly to end her life as well as his own. It is not worth killing someone over nonsense, no one deserves to die , unless they have done something so horrifying, such as murder or rape, RIP to the mother and hope the kids stay strong for themselves and each other…
    We are all human, and sometimes people fall so bad they snap, there are many options to solve a temporary issue.. hopefully others can use this as guidance for theirs.

  12. That man is a cold blooded murderer that stole a mother from her kids because of his own selfish reasons. I don’t care what anyone says about knowing him or how nice he was, he’s a self centered, egotistical monster and I have not one ounce of sadness for the loss of his life. He ruined 3 kids’ lives so he deserves to be dead. It’s too bad he didn’t suffer more than he did. This whole event was on his terms, because of his own butt hurt feelings that he thought he was allowed to play God and end her life and that makes me sick. My heart hurts thinking about every single day those children will cry because they miss their mom. I hope I never have to run into anyone that says what a ‘good guy’ he was, because all he was was a vicious killer and comments to the contrary should be saved for whatever funeral he’s going to get because those are the only people that MIGHT want to hear that crap.       I knew the guy who fatally shot his wife. Best believe he wasn’t a nice guy. I had a VERY out of character experience with him in the past over my own wife. Every word you wrote about that individual who committed that act upon his wife is very so correct. “CONDOLENCES TOO THE THREE CHILDREN & THE FAMILY OF THE WIFE.” No longer will we have to endure the presences of him!

  16. She was an absolute wonderful mother and friend. And to clear up any confusion none of the children are his biological children. The youngest 2 are my god children. She was her kid’s world. This hurts like I could never imagine.

    • I’m sorry for your lost as she was friend to us as well. Chloe is my daughter’s good friend. My heart is sicked with this tragedy. I didn’t k ow it was her I thought it was reversed that it was her neighbor that got shot until this afternoon I couldn’t get a hold of her so I posted to get a name and my nightmare came true.     I knew him personally and this has left me distraught and confused.
    He had a huge heart and loved everyone.
    He was such a people person and loved by so many. He spoke highly of his wife and the children.
    My prayers are with all the families at this time.

  20. A comment from the FB posting states that the husband was not the father of the children. Hopefully the biological father is around and has the ability and desire to step in and take care if them.

    • None of the children were his all though he himself had 3 children. This is truly a tragedy I don’t know her but I do know him. I am truly sorry for both familys but most of all for the children hers and his. They are the ones who are truly suffering. May God be with them all.

  24. I live a minute away and saw the kids playing in the yard while their parents watched, no sign of what was to come. So tragic for these poor children, praying for my nieghbors and their children.

      • No need to name call. I think what she meant was she used to see the kids play in the yard while their parents watched and there was no sign of what was brewing. She didn’t indicate that she saw them that day. Just an awful tragedy.

  25. Devastating!!!!.. .Those poor kids are now left without parents. The best part of the story is that the kids were out of town.
    Thank God they didnt have to witness their father killing their mother..
    Praying they are able to get through this horrible real-life nightmare.
