Girl dead, 4 injured in 14 Fwy rollover crash [updated]

ACTON – A single-vehicle crash of an SUV on the northbound Antelope Valley (14) Freeway Thursday morning left a year-old girl dead and a woman and three other children badly injured, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The crash was reported about 6:20 a.m. Thursday, July 20, at Red Rover Mine Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. Paramedics and two air ambulances were sent to the scene.

“For reasons being investigated, (the driver) allowed (the SUV) to veer to the right, colliding with the dirt embankment, causing (the SUV) to overturn several times,” a CHP statement said.

The year-old girl was ejected from the black Chevrolet Trailblazer and died at a hospital, the CHP reported.

The driver, 37-year-old Karen Adams of Los Angeles, and the other children who were riding in the SUV with her — an 8-year-old boy, an 8-year-old girl and a 14-year-old — were hospitalized with major injuries.

“Alcohol (and/or) drugs is being investigated in this collision,” the CHP statement said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

UPDATED 7.21.17: The 8-year-old boy died at the hospital of his injuries Thursday, according to broadcast reports.

UPDATED 7.21.17: The SUV’s driver, Karen Adams, 37, of Los Angeles, died at a hospital about 12:45 a.m. Friday, July 21, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

UPDATED 7.24.17: Authorities have identified the two children killed in the crash as Kaylynn Clay-Crawford, who was 9 months of age; and Keion Jones, an 8-year-old boy.

  1. All this speculation. you ignorant sorry people. the mother fell asleep after she had pulled over once and tried to continue to make it home. i know her cousin. so sad you attention seekers always assume the worse.

  2. What the hell is the matter with you to state your speculations and or accusation towards the mother as if you are capable of predictions. On these posts/comments maybe you should keep your speculations to yourselves instead of disrespecting this family.

  3. To the family of the one yr old who was taken, my heart and prayers are with you during these difficult times. May you take courage, strength and comfort in knowing that soon we shall be with our beloved ones whom have only left us for a brief moment in paradise because they are in the memory of our Almighty Heavenly Father of tender mercies who will call them out through our Savior Jesus Christ.   5. Sad story. May that poor sweet angel baby girl rest in peace. I hope her siblings recover. “Drugs & Alcohol” suspected. “Driver allowed SUV to drift into dirt embankment” – were the children restrained? Was the infant in a car seat restrained? I have a suspicion the mother intentionally wrecked her vehicle with the purpose of killing herself & family. Or simply drifted off. My heart goes out to those children.
