Both have “murder” and “voluntary manslaughter” as prior convictions, and they are out on parole. This is pathetic and disgusting……. I have no words. Way to go “justice system.”
Tim Scott says
Are you suggesting “life without parole” should be a minimum sentence for these crimes?
Not-So-Much says
Well, not in every case. But What I’m seeing, is the first gentleman was convicted of manslaughter, robbery, and murder. And to top it off, he was paroled for grand theft firearm. It raises a red flag for me that he was deemed to be safe to return to society at the young age of 42! It appears that the ol’ 25 to life for murder is now 5-7 years with good behavior.
Tim Scott says
Well, “he was paroled for” means that his most recent conviction was for grand theft, not murder. Without any actual knowledge of the history the only timeline that seems to fit is a big manslaughter/murder/robbery case as a late teens or early twenties youngster, followed by the grand theft as a second strike when he got out.
Now, a convicted murderer getting caught stealing a gun is certainly a red flag, but there is a limit to how much of a sentence can be handed out for grand theft under the law. Should that law be modified somehow? Maybe.
But something else to look at is what purpose is served by taking a youngster who has committed a heinous crime and turning them into a middle aged man who has never had any real life experience outside a prison and turning them loose on society. If we are going to give up on that youngster we need to say so and give him life without parole. If we are going to eventually turn him loose we need to make a citizen out of him while we have him. I can’t say which of those seem like a better idea to me, but I know that either of them is smarter than what we do.
