Body found in supermarket entry column identified

LANCASTER – The coroner’s office Tuesday released the name of a man whose decomposing body was found stuck inside a brick pillar at a Lancaster supermarket.

The body of Raymundo Rivera, 35, was found about 2:40 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11,  inside a pillar at Winco Foods, 740 West Avenue K, according to the Los Angeles county coroner’s office and sheriff’s department. His place of residence was not immediately available.

Investigators have said he may have been a man on the run from sheriff’s deputies.

Deputies had chased a man suspected of driving a stolen vehicle on Aug. 6, when a witness says he ran into the supermarket, sprinted up stairs into the offices, and then hid in a crawl space.

Investigators thought he simply got away, but six days later, a store manager complained about a strong smell.

A plumber was called and a couple of bricks were broken to look inside the pillar.

“When they did that they looked down and they could see a shoe and a leg down there at the bottom of the column inside the column,” sheriff’s Lt. John Corina said.

The body was in “advanced stages of decomposition,” according to the sheriff’s department.

Corina said it appeared Rivera fell or climbed into the inside of the column and could not get out.

Corina called it “a horrible way to die.”

An autopsy is still pending, according to the coroner’s office.

I see ppl fighting and arguing when we are all adults the guy made a dumb mistake or a few but truth is he knew no other way to be or I’m sure he would have made better choices fact is he’s human and my heart breaks to think what went on in that poor mans mind in his last moments so why don’t we all have some respect as humanity have mercy on each other R.I.P and I hope his family has strength to recover from this

  5. I don’t know why all of you are talking about the wall. This guy was born and raised in California, more specifically in the San Fernando Valley. So get off the wall comments. He took a family members vehicle without their knowledge and it was reported. Did he make a good decision NO. And yes he had a record of stupid petty offenses as many of you all do also. Nobody is perfect so don’t judge anyone else. All these negative and demeaning remarks need to be refrained from. Nobody knows what thoughts were in his mind and nobody ever will. Those thoughts and the complete truth died with him that day. He had children that has to see and hear these remarks. As adults we will go on with our lives without him, but as his daughter they will be forever without a father. They are also the ones that these remarks will be carried with them forever. Come on have some empathy for these 2 little girls. R.I.P. Raymundo. Your babies will love you forever.

  7. This is the tragic consequence of someone who spent a good portion of his life making crappy decisions and not looking “ahead” to see what could happen.

    I am sorry that his family had to experience his loss, but I am not sad over the situation.

    Look, I have faced horrible discrimination in my life! …Came from a poor/broke family, been denied jobs because of who I am, been lied to by supervisors in the past, been stolen from, been cheated on, etc., but I persisted and got to a place in life where I feel secure. I am 36, so not much older than this guy.

    I chose a path of education, of surrounding myself with good people and making choices that will better my future.

    This guy has had almost the same lifespan as I have, yet he actively chose a life of crime, of running from the cops and then trying to hide in a place where, had he been thinking, would’ve known the Sun was going to rise and bake him to death. But he didn’t think that far ahead.

    None of them ever do.

    So there’s nobody to blame but himself.

  8. Society is a mess. This was just a strange incident that happened. He was human just like all of you folks including my self. He did not make the right choice but he didn’t deserve to die such a terrible death. Walls don’t matter, he was still a father, son, husband and a friend to others. Yeah he shouldn’t have been in a stolen car, but we as humans don’t need to make the family suffer any more then they already are. May he rest !

  10. What a horrible way to die and all I see are rude comments. He has a family and he may have been on the wrong path, but he’s still human and nobody deserves to die that way. You’re an awful person if you think he deserved to die this way. I’m sure you guys wouldn’t appreciate strangers on the internet saying awful things about your loved ones who’ve died, it doesn’t matter if they’re criminals or not, he never killed anybody.     • See here’s the thing. We don’t have to respect him. He chose to do what he did and get himself in that situation. When you go around stealing people’s stuff and then running from the cops, what do you expect? Jail would have been better!

      • Mando, you might notice that the person you are responding to said “respect HIS FAMILY.” No one suggested that you have to respect HIM. Perhaps you just missed that, or perhaps you are among the people so eager to show disrespect whenever you can justify it to yourself that you ignored it.

        I’m not really big on “respect me, just because” myself. If someone wants my respect they have to earn it. However, I don’t go looking to be openly disrespectful just offhand either. That too has to be earned, in my opinion.

  13. 35 is a little late in life to be driving around in a stolen car. Probably a career criminal and worthless to society. He died a horrible death pinned in sweltering concrete box but he chose to flee police so it was his own doing.

  14. KARMA ! That I’m sure was a horrible way to die but……..obviously his life wasn’t especially good if he was out stealing things from other people. At least he saved us taxpayers some money! I bet momma’s proud…..he was such a good man, he never hurt nobody, etc…

  16. HATE is all I hear. That’s why this world is so divided.Sounds like he had made one too many bad choices. If the guy wouldn’t of stole the car he would not be running from the police. He died a horrible way (hes still a human). I feel bad for the person whose car got stolen. Who knows if they couldn’t get to work, or to the doctors, or used all their hard work money for their car. OVERALL its a very bad and sad situation.

    • Agreed. But there is much we don’t know, did he steal the car? Is he on drugs? Inmate info on the La County Jail site shows only misdemeanors but one of his charges shows a DoC hold so its likely he has been in prison, and he was sentenced to probation a few times so he was most likely on it. But what a horrible way to die, pinned, and nobody can hear you. He might have lasted a 3 or 4 hours or 3 or 4 days of hell, hard to tell. I am betting he crawled in there to hide, but did not realize he would be trapped.

  18. If the person kept there hands off other people’s property, it never would have happened, that simple, and a large message to thieves, someone got there car stolen and totalled, where is the sympathy for the first victim of this man?
