Lancaster principal pleads not guilty in deadly alleged DUI crash

LANCASTER – A local elementary school principal pleaded not guilty Monday to driving drunk and killing a woman in a head-on crash in Palmdale last year.

Mary Noel Kruppe, 36, of Pearblossom is being held in lieu of $2 million bail on a murder charge stemming from the death of 29-year-old Lancaster resident Jessica Ordaz.

The fatal crash happened around 6:50 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, on 50th Street East north of Avenue P in Palmdale. Kruppe was behind the wheel of a 2014 Jeep Wrangler that was traveling southbound on 50th Street East when it veered left into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a 2010 Mazda driven by Ordaz, authorities said.

Ordaz was pronounced dead at the scene, and Kruppe, a principal at Enterprise Elementary School in Lancaster, was taken to a hospital for treatment of moderate injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.

After pleading not guilty to murder, Kruppe was ordered to return to court on June 3, when a date is expected to be set for a preliminary hearing to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to proceed to trial.

If convicted as charged, Kruppe could face up to 15 years to life in state prison, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

  4. Tragedy ending for the Ordaz family. But the most tragedy is the DUI driver has not plea guilty and accept her consequence. Yes, she is jail but has not received what deserves. Yes she feels bad but only because she got caught drinking and driving. And to my family and I, this woman deserve life. A lifetime won’t bring our love one back. We pray justice.

    • None of us can even imagine your pain. You have my deepest condolences and prayers for strength.

      What I don’t understand is why the DA has not pushed this case harder to bring some level of closure. The case is clear, but delay after delay is not helping anyone.

      But please know this – Jessica was a gift and a blessing to all who knew her while she was here. I can only pray is is the blessing of her life that you remember and can take solace in.

  5. Let me start by saying what happened here is a tragedy. All caused by irresponsible conduct. I do not excuse what happened. My comments however are for all the haters.
    None of you are Christians obviously. No compassion. Did you know the defendant has 2 children ages 5 and 7….what about them? Should we just say F em? They now have no mother. Of course punishment is warranted. In Matt 7-5 says,”You hypocrites take the plank from your own eye so you may see the speck in your brothers eye” and what that means is that EACH and EVERY one of you is a phony…fake…have done things you are ashamed of. Probably most of you have at least once driven drunk. I am not excusing anyone…..a price will be paid. But to all you hating phony hypocrites….chill out. Take the edge off yourself…look in the mirror….be more loving.

    • Having a drunk for a parent is NOT the best option. My parent was a drunk and it was not fun, sometimes bordered on dangerous. It is better the children go with a responsible family member or even a good foster home (that is a whole other subject about the many crappy foster parents the system has).
      If the drunk can not control itself then the drunk should be relegated to only using Uber/Lyft/Public transport after being released from jail for the death of a person from their own choices.
      The compassion is that the drunk was not given the eye for an eye treatment of the old testament.

            Facts are: Driving while intoxicated is against the law and the particular law has a long history, it is not a new law. A person chose to drive while intoxicated. That same person caused a death by driving intoxicated. A trial happened. A punishment was decided upon by the court.

            Yes, there is a law against driving while intoxicated.
            Kruppe broke that law and someone died as a result. Two families suffered – one of them irreparably. She deserves all the punishment she gets and more.
            No, there has mot yet been a trial. And no punishment has been decided.

            Yeah I realized after typing my statement I had mixed two different cases in my head. Apologies for that gaff.
            Still wondering though, does it really make a difference about how often she drove while intoxicated? One time in this case was one time too many. That is the point I was trying to make. It does not matter if she was habitual about it or not.

            I would opine that we should ALL be looking at the punishment phase a bit more carefully, as WE, the citizens, must deal with the results of said actions… No matter your position regarding “justice” (a relative term, to be sure), two real families and at least two ‘work families’ have been devastated by this person’s stupid action. To further devastate the situation will have no benefit towards the justice for those remaining other than, possibly, to satisfy a few people’s base feelings of vengeance. WE, the living, will still have to deal with all of the eventual consequences to our community as a result of our imposed consequences upon the perpetrator of this act of tragic stupidity.

            Let the punishment heal the crime… at least as much as possible.

            And no offense meant… but we are called to forgive those who have hurt us. That forgiveness is not for the offender…it is for us. It is so we can begin to heal. Otherwise that hate and resentment will eat away at us for the rest of our lives.

    • I worked with her and I don’t hate her at all. I can not say she did not care for them but they were definitely not her priority. Mary Kruppe used to laugh and say her husband was a stay at home mom, so they did not lose their mom. I’m sure he is taking good care of them. I pray for those who do hate her to heal and find forgiveness.

          • I am better the Mary Kruppe. I am not driving drunk risking my life and the life of others. I care about the well-being of others and I especially care about my family, my children, my husband, my mother and many others. I don’t hate her, I don’t know her but I can tell you that her decisions hurt a lot of people and scarred some for life. No, you do not have to delve into my life. I have nothing to hide. But it sounds like you are excusing her because of your own skeletons in your closet. No gossip and no innuendos and the proof is there. She killed someone driving drunk as she has done. The law will decide her faith not her haters as you call them, me, or even you. She alone brought all this on her, no one else is at fault but her.     • Do you understand what the Watson Murder charge actually is and the legal requirements for it? Typically, it requires a prior dui, which is not present in this case.

      What I heard is the judge told the DA their Watson case is weak and the attornies need to discuss a reduced charge.

        Why would there be a Watson Murder Charge if she doesn’t have prior DUIs?

        • There was no previous charge. We all sign a Watson statement when we renew our license. That is the reason they put a Watson Murder charge.

Until one day, they ruin lives. They are drunk drivers. And as bad as it is to drive drunk, and as dangerous as drunk drivers are to all of us on the roads, this is about the worst kind of drunk driver: the repeat offender.

    There are millions of them out there putting you in danger every time you drive down the street.
    Arrests, fines, convictions—nothing seems enough to stop these serial drunk drivers. I know of one man from Iowa who’s had 11 DUI convictions. Another, in New Mexico, has had 14. One man says many of these drunk drivers are not just a nuisance or a tragic annoyance with a weakness for alcohol. He has one word to describe a repeat drunk driver who slammed into his world: murderer.

    Mary Kruppe is a repeat drunk driver. She is driven drunk many times; she just never got caught until that horrible night, Nov. 15th. She should stay in prison. How much time should she receive? “No two cases are the same!” The law will soon let us know.

    • Actually you are spot on. I agree. I think the law must change and also apply to marijuana as well.
      But that includes increased penalties for dui. You drive drunk or high, jail time.

      One question – how do you know she has driven drunk? No, she had never had a violation for it.

      My only argument on here has been that any relationships she may or may not have had, her job performance and what people think of her personally (prior to this incident) have nothing to do with what punishment she receives.

Pushing more than a ton of steel are self-centered people texting, talking, and playing games on their cell phones while driving. How about a GPS system installed in cars that automatically sends a message to the closest police station when a cell phone is in use. The phone is fried, and that eliminates the problem. Considering the alternative is killing someone. This could also work for people that drinks and drives. The car detects alcohol, sending a message to the closest police station.

    • I agree with your comments. But what do you say about reckless drivers who cause loss of life? Those driving 10-15 mph faster than the flow of traffic, zagging in and out and cutting people off?
      By your argument wouldn’t they deserve the same treatment?
      Alcohol impairs your judgement, therefore when you decide to drive your judgement is not normal. But a reckless driver does so intentionally.

      • People plan ahead of time to go drinking. They know they will have to go home after drinking. They know they will be drunk or buzz when going home. That’s is a decision made intentionally. So, intentionally they drank, drove drunk, and intentionally killed someone. Same as those driving recklessly, passing dangerously other drivers, texting while driving. It is against the law to drive under those conditions. Let’s change the law so that stupids can’t stop intentionally committing these crimes and taking the lives of others.     • We cannot treat all offenders equally as no two cases are the same… ever. Kruppe has no convictions. Never been caught drinking and driving. But, she had been drinking and driving prior to Nov 15. This time she was not so lucky. Less fortunate is the Ordaz family. Kruppe forever ruined and changed their lives with her careless behavior. No, we should care about the relationships she may or may not had. But unfortunately the way she behaved and the thing she said or did does contribute to how people react and feel about her current situation. People hate her for many reasons. They only know those reasons. You don’t and I don’t. Can their hatred contribute to her sentence, most likely not. Things will come out when time is right. And if there’s anything, nothing stays hidden forever. We just have to wait and see, and accept whatever comes out of this tragedy.

      I’m always surprised at the lack of answers people have for this, and maybe you will surprise me by having an answer for me:

      When I was in the navy I drove home drunk a couple times. When I was a teenager I drove home drunk a couple times. Just about everyone I know has driven home buzzed, at the very least, at least once or twice. I know there is an arrogance at play, that says “I’m so good at driving that even drunk I made it home,” and that arrogance is pretty common. I know a lot of people believe it, but when you put that aside it is pretty obvious that the vast majority of drunk drivers are lucky enough, and a few aren’t.

      So here’s the question: If we are going to punish the unlucky ones as “murderers,” what do we do with the rest? Given that “the rest” means a huge fraction of the population, this becomes a very tough question. The average person can say “give murderers the death penalty” without having to consider that they are themselves a murderer, or that they have multiple friends and family members who have murdered in the past and may well do so again after the next family barbecue.

      But in all probability you have a personal friend or family member who will commit DUI and get away with it this week. Do you plan to treat them as if they have gotten away with murder?

      She will remain in prison, however June 3 is only a preliminary hearing. She will be sentenced only if she pleads guilty to the current charge.

        • Well our legal system says innocent until proven guilty and that people have a right to a trial. To be sentenced she must either go to trial or plead guilty. Neither of those is likely to happen on Jun 3. But you already know that, you simply choose to troll.

I know too many teachers that drink and drive, also drive while heavily medicated from prescription drugs, etc. These teacher haven’t killed anyone yet, but their (crappy) decisions are made almost on a daily basis. If one of these many teachers, or any one else, kills someone, they also will receive due punishment. I won’t have to make excuses, because I am a licensed driver that hasn’t even had a ticket in 15 years. Maybe the laws should be changed so no drinking is allowed .00, instead of .08.

    Kruppe pleaded not guilty to murder. Had the charge been vehicular manslaughter perhaps the plea would have been different. Learn the legal system before you make ignorant comments.

    If you believe Kruppe should get life, then you must hold that position for anyone who drives drunk and kills another. Perhaps so…but the same must also apply to all those who kill another through negligence. For example, Kate Steinle’s killer.

      NO ONE should plead guilty TO ANYTHING prior to the preliminary hearing, and no lawyer would let them. The media has to report, because it is what they do, but at this hearing the only thing that could have happened that would have been newsworthy would have been a guilty plea…to anything. If someone pleads guilty at this stage the judge would stop them, because they would automatically be able to appeal on grounds of having ineffective counsel.

      This “story” should have been “another step completed in the judicial process in the very usual way, nothing to see here.”

  21. Mary, you have taken the life of a young woman with a bright future ahead of her. You have taken from her family all the hopes and dreams they had for her. They will not get to see Jessica be married. They will not get to see their grandchildren being born. They won’t have the birthday parties, Christmas dinners, soccer games, awards ceremonies at school and all the other wonderful life moments our children and grandchildren give us. You caused this and you need to be held accountable.

    There is nothing you can do to bring Jessica back. That said, there is something you can do to help.

    Don’t drag a grieving family through a long drawn-out process. They did nothing wrong and don’t deserve the anguish you are currently heaping upon them. It’s wrong and many of us wonder how much more pain you want to cause them. From where most of us sit, it looks like you don’t care. You’re simply trying to get the best deal possible for yourself, not them. If the family gets hurt even more in the process, oh well.

    You can change this.

    Attorneys gets paid by the hour. Think long and hard about this. Most likely, the longer you drag this out, the more you’ll pay the attorney. Attorneys aren’t paid to do what’s right and moral. They are paid to get you the most favorable deal. It’s up to you to decide what is right and moral.

    Attorneys aren’t always right. Just because you have been advised to drag the family through a living hell, does not mean it’s the right thing to do. Deep down you may know this. I hope so.

    Out of respect for the family I would suggest you immediately accept responsibility for what you have done. Tell the family you have hurt them in a way unimaginable to most of us. There is nothing you can do to bring Jessica back, but you want to honor her memory by bringing this horrific saga to an end. You’ll admit your guilt and you will accept your punishment.

    Only then will you be able to have true inner peace. Yes, there will be prison time. This is coming anyway. It will be a significant amount of time, but eventually it will end. If you have been honest, and respectful of the family, you will certainly have more more peace and, therefore, a higher quality life in the future. If you accept responsibility for your actions there may be people out there who would come to your side and support you. After all, you are responsible for how this matter plays out.

    If, on the other hand, you choose to accept advice from those who don’t care how the family feels, you’ll have a whole community of people whose anger towards you will continue to be substantial and prolonged.

    It’s your choice. Do what’s right for the family in mourning or do whatever it takes to try and get yourself the best deal possible at their expense. When all is said and done, the attorney will get paid and move on to the next case. You will be the one who has to live with your choices.

She should have plead guilty and faced the music, this all stemmed from her drowning her sorrows away after she got caught having an affair (she’s married) with another principal Pinto. They got in a car accident together and got caught. Then that scandal was exposed. Her life is spinning down the drain, which is sad. But she made a bad choice and needs to own her actions.
