LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to prohibit official travel to Alabama for one year in response to that state’s recently approved abortion ban.
The motion, recommended by Supervisor Hilda Solis, makes exceptions for travel related to emergencies and other matters where the ban would seriously harm county interests.
“This challenge by Alabama and other states would overturn decades of precedent,” Solis said in a statement issued after the vote. “It is an attack not only confined to the residents of those states, but an act of aggression upon all of us. We must stand in solidarity and in opposition against extremist and unconstitutional laws that put the health and well-being of families at risk.”
The four members of the board present at the meeting, all women, voted in favor of the prohibition without comment.
Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas was in Oakland for an event with Gov. Gavin Newsom focused on statewide homelessness.
At least one member of the public opposed the motion, titled “Abortion is Healthcare.”
“Abortion is not health care,” Mark Gallagher told the board. “It is a grave moral evil.”
The supervisors also voted to send a letter to the governors and legislative leaders of Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio and Utah setting out the county’s opposition to legislation restricting access to abortion and calling for the immediate repeal of any such laws.
“Everyone knows that banning abortion won’t stop women from accessing abortion services even when it puts them in unsafe medical situations,” Supervisor Sheila Kuehl said. “In Alabama, women who have the money will be able to safely access abortion, but women who are poor will not. Women across the country must resist legislation that will limit reproductive choices that are essential to every woman’s health.”
The board directed its CEO and county counsel to monitor relevant legislation and look for opportunities to participate as a plaintiff or in filing a friend of the court brief in related lawsuits.
“Los Angeles County will stand against all attempts to dismantle the protections afforded by Roe v. Wade and the U.S. Constitution,” Solis said. “Today’s vote sends a strong signal that infringing upon an individual’s rights to reproductive health and privacy are not American values.”

Soon there will be no more red states or blue states. No more divisive political parties. Come soon Lord to set up your Kingdom.
Alexis says
“If you think the stock market has a fence around it, you might be a redneck,” or a hillbilly. Hillbilly heroin “oxycodone” is a serious problem in California too. Also meth, prescription meds, alcoholism, heroin, spice, etc. A woman can still easily get an abortion though. There are also plenty of free clinics that a woman can acquire birth control.
Roxanne says
Liberals that think “Hollywood” is a beacon of integrity. Powerful men that violate girls, women, boys, and men. They are pro-choice though, except when it comes to their hedonistic lifestyle that violates the naïve. Liberal in destroying others.
Steve Kirkwood says
Hollywood pulling out of Georgia because of repressive laws regarding women? Hollywood doesn’t give a dam about women rights. They just used it as an excuse to keep the revenue in their neighborhood. These same producers since “Hollywood” was born are the same producers using their power to violate women.
Steve Kirkwood says
Seems to me, with the complete lack of ethical standards, and corruption within L.A. County, prohibiting official travel for one year to Alabama is hypocritical on so many levels. Instead of pointing fingers and issuing edicts, why not clean up your own house. There are plenty of acts of aggression going on right here. As for me, I will choose who I align myself with, not Hilda Solis, and the “we” group.
Tim Scott says
As I told someone else, pick your red state paradise and GTFO. Don’t let the door hit ya in the butt.
It’s hilarious to me how you wanna be “conservatives” spew constantly, but you certainly won’t move to one of these paradise islands in flyover country. Don’t talk the talk, walk the walk. Go enjoy the jobless “heartland.” Get yourself some hillbilly heroin and knock yourself out there in your own patch of austerity.
D'Arcy L. says
Now you’re mocking poor people in rural areas using hillbilly heroin. O.K.
Tim Scott says
Actually, I’m mocking yet another “the red states are paradise” claimant who undoubtedly would rather not acknowledge the reality of life in the red states. I am not surprised that you apparently can’t follow that, but maybe this post will provide a map for you.
Hannah says
Tim Scott using a racial slur, “hillbilly.” Putting down poor white folks.
Tim Scott says
If you like it so much, why do you snivel about it so much? This is pretty much paradise, specifically because the red staters you admire so much have zero political power at the state and county levels. If you are gonna claim to “contribute” then do it…don’t just whine out pretense conservatism.
You still haven’t acknowledged the blatant absurdity of your initial claim that “they can just host conventions and if LA County isn’t represented than the largest contingent of money spending attendees just won’t be missed.” Seems like you are more interested in playing to the usual brainless “oh, boy someone thinks they are getting some licks in at Tim” crowd.
Robert says
Tim, no one whines more than you. Poor, poor Tim. How long have you been sniveling about your lot in life? I thought you were leaving because nothing is working out for you here. You left Lancaster because you were unhappy. Now you can’t stand Palmdale because of sellout Steve, Austin Bishop, and all the rest of the politicians in the A.V. You said you were leaving California because it isn’t paradise for you anymore. You cashed in everything, so please leave. You do nothing for this community but complain.
Tim Scott says
What “lot in life” is that, pray tell? I’m pretty satisfied with my life. Had exciting jobs, saw the world, retired by fifty, great kids. I have the economic freedom to move at will…as you said, I’ve removed all investment from the AV…the US actually…so I can leave any time. I really have no personal complaints at all.
I left Lancaster because I was targeted by Wrecks’ goons in code enforcement. Not because I had criticized Wrecks too much, but because guys who are used as thugs by corruption at the top had a little side hustle of their own going and what can you do about that really? They can’t be corrected by people who are using them in their own corrupt schemes. Low level corruption is what you have to expect under leadership like that, so I moved away from it. I wasn’t particularly unhappy about leaving Lancaster, and I’m pretty far under the radar in Palmdale since I don’t own anything here. When the corruption starts leaking down from Sellout Steve it can’t hurt me no matter how bad it gets, because I can just leave.
Hannah says
I agree with you Mr. Kirkwood. Tim, there is no one that complains more than you about the community you live in. You’re also a downright bigot full of hubris. I love California, and I would love to see you and all the sniveling complainers in the A.V. take your miserable lives to some rural area, where you can tell it to the trees.
Hannah says
I’m so sorry Steve, that you can’t post your opinion without some horrible person swearing at you. I guess the time has passed, respectfully disagreeing with one another.
Hank Biscuits says
Obviously, Tim, you have your opinion and I respect that. But here’s a little data for you. Fiscally speaking Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina, all of which you brought up, are ranked 14th, 18th, and 13th. Where does your beloved California tank? 42nd, just behind another great state of New York. And who is last? Illinois. What doe these states have in common? You tell me.
Tim Scott says
Well, to make a guess I would have to know what statistic you are actually referring to with the vague “fiscally speaking,” which I assume you lifted from some right wing echo chamber talking point. In short, you didn’t provide any data despite your claim.
But, that really has nothing to do with the point I was making, which was that for any convention planner to just say “well, we should just ignore the largest county in the country, we don’t need them to attend” would be just flat stupid. Here’s something interesting about the three states you named…not one of them has the population that LA County has, so presumably not one of them has as many county workers available to send to conventions and spend their money.
SaveTheBabies says
Their new logo should be LAC Kills Babies
Lee says
In the same meeting, the LA Co Board of Incompetents derided DCFS for not doing enough to save kids and banned travel to Alabama for not making it easy enough to kill kids.
Which is it, Stuporvisors? Are we trying to save kids or kill them?
Moving into another county or state looks better and better every year…
Travel Ban says
LAC has its own problems to deal with.
Teetsonabull says
This will go a long way in helping us solve our local problems of homelessness, housing, cost of education, environment, and jobs.
Dolts.
Hank Biscuits says
Do they honestly think that Alabama cares about what the LA County board of sups thinks about them? What a joke.
Tim Scott says
Do you have any idea how much revenue is generated by a national convention of, say, sheriffs? Or public safety officials? Or whatever brand of county employed public servants you want to fill in there? Do you think cities in Alabama appreciate being on the “can’t host such an event there” list?
Hank Biscuits says
They can still have their conventions, just without LA County officials. I bet they don’t mind that one bit.
Tim Scott says
LOL…sure man…oh, wait, what’s the SINGLE LARGEST COUNTY IN THE COUNTRY again? Oh, that’s right, Los Angeles.
And, do you seriously think LA county thought this up all by themselves and they are the only one?
Get with the program. Passing repressive laws in a state makes that state a loser, or in Alabama’s case even more of a loser than they already were. North Carolina lost hundreds of millions when the NCAA pulled out over their repressive laws. Atlanta was on the rise towards displacing Hollywood, and then Georgia passed some repressive laws that are costing them BILLIONS.
We don’t need to do anything, the red states are destroying themselves.
Hank Biscuits says
You are delirious Tim Scott. Are you saying that California, with its debt and homelessness running amuck, housing markets that are unaffordable and a governor that taxes us on everything especially gas, is desirable? Why are people flocking to Texas from California? Tell me that? You don’t have all the bs regulations in the name of the environment holding you down. Who cares about being the biggest county anyway? That’s what has turned our valley into what it is today. Growth and size only matters with one thing my friend, and it’s not county size. It’s also not about money, it’s a moral thing and the right thing to do. If you can go to bed at night knowing that innocent lives are being murdered because of irresponsibility, good for you. Watch how these babies are tugged out of the womb and not be stirred, it will show just how cold blooded you actually are. Hank Biscuits out
Tim Scott says
Not far enough out Hank. Pick your favorite red state paradise and GTFO. The sooner the better.
D'Arcy L. says
It’s o.k. to murder babies by the millions, but just don’t kill anyone with a gun. Hypocrite.
D'Arcy L. says
Hank Biscuits: Thank you for your comment. Abortion: The land is full of bloody crimes. This isn’t a red or blue issue; it is a moral issue. You can deceive yourself into thinking you know best what moral issues are.
Steve Kirkwood says
Hollywood in the ethics business? I’m sure it is costing Georgia billions, but Hollywood is an oxymoron. Some examples of hypocrisy: Harvey Weinstein, and who’s that other actor that used his power to molest boys? Well, the list is too long, and my point is, money and power can affect businesses, but will, in the end will destroy this nation. To “Hollywood” it’s acceptable to sexually violate women and men, fill minds with violence, film women being violated, and the disgusting list goes on.

LA County is a joke.
