This isn’t ancestry.com. This IS a black man that is wanted for residential burglary; it’s that simple.

“The suspect appears to be a black man…”
He is.

This brings up an interesting question. For you, what is it that takes you across the line from “appears to be…” to “is…”? I ask because I was talking to some people the other day about the ethnicity question on the census, and we noted that while it defines all the choices it has no numbers, which makes it pretty much a self-referenced question, ie each respondent is whatever ethnicity they say they are and that’s about all there is to it.
For example, the definition of “white” is “A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa.” Okay, so my mother’s parents came to the US from Europe. I can definitely answer “white” and back my answer up from the definition provided. But, the definition of Native American is “A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central America) and who maintains tribal affiliation or community attachment.” If I went out and established ‘community attachment’ I could answer as that as well, since I do have such ‘origins,’ although they are far more diluted. My father comes from people who have lived in North America for a lot longer than my mother’s people and there was a fair bit of mixing. That mixing may also include some ‘origins’ that qualify me to answer ‘black,’ and/or ‘hispanic’ according to those definitions, and frankly might include space aliens or time travelers for all I know.
So, I always say ‘white’ because I do have at least some ‘European origins,’ in fact mathematically that’s a majority although the question does not say ‘go with the majority.’ I also say ‘white’ because looking in the mirror I certainly look like your basic Scottish clansman so it seems least likely to be argued over.
But you are saying that this suspect IS black…not that they identify themselves on the census as “A person having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa” although I would not be surprised if that would be their answer. You also are clearly not satisfied that they ‘appear black,’ like I ‘appear Scottish.’ So what is your criteria? How do you stick an IS in about someone else, where the definitions on the census basically leave the question at “you (the person being questioned) just choose and that’s the answer.”
Response says
There is no such thing as a Native American. Their DNA goes back to west and central Asia. They migrated to North America by crossing a land bridge between Siberia and Alaska.
Tim Scott says
Yeah. That is another glaring flaw in the “definitions” on the census. The ‘origins’ depend very much on WHEN you declare the “first moment,” don’t they?
But, as I said, in the end the census question on ethnicity winds up as “each participant is whatever they say they are.” Which means that while some people might want to take the AVTimes (which is actually just quoting the sheriff’s department) to task for their “politically correct” ‘appears to be’ description, they aren’t wrong. For census purposes that guy may have said white, or Asian, or anything else. All we can do in a DESCRIPTION is say how he APPEARS.
This should settle it says
Elizabeth Warren is a Native American.
NAtive American says
I am Native American. Native to the AMERICAS. I can not be traced back any other place but north and south America..Hello@!

That depends on what the meaning of “is” is. See, I speak Democrat.
Mandy says
He not only appears to be black, but he is. This isn’t about the census or whether he is a Democrat or a Republican. His family tree doesn’t change the fact that he is wanted for residential burglary. Annoying long winded comments that amount to nothing.
