LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to create a Youth Climate Commission.
Supervisors Hilda Solis and Sheila Kuehl co-authored the motion to establish a 25-member commission with five seats granted to residents of each supervisorial district.
“Young people, especially young people of color, bear the brunt (of the climate crisis),” Solis said. “We must assure that they have a seat at the table.”
More than 2 million Los Angeles County residents are under the age of 18 and Solis pointed out that many teens are already mobilizing to demand action on climate change.
Kuehl quoted Greta Thunberg, the Swedish teen who recently blasted United Nations members for their inaction on climate change, saying “our house is on fire.”
Several students offered their support for the motion.
“Let students, who have the most to lose, help to address the largest crisis facing humanity,” a student from the Marlborough School in Hancock Park urged the board.
The board directed the county’s chief sustainability officer to report back in 60 days on the steps to set up a commission that is representative of the geographic and socioeconomic diversity of the region.
The scope of the commission’s work was not addressed in the motion. View the motion here.

From 1970 -1979 it was all about The Coming ICE Age. In 1970 they said by 1975 we were going to have 100-200 million die from starvation and famine. The oil was going to run out. By 1985 everybody would have to wear gas mask. Look up Google at the 100 predictions they made since 1970 to the present day. None of them came true and you won’t believe some of the silly stuff they predicted in the 70s. You will have a good laugh. I’m 55 so I remember the Ice Age stuff and the Acid Rain that was going to wipe out the Rainforest and kill everybody. So far the scientist been so wrong over the last 50 years. It’s funny to see what people thought 50 years ago. Wow how silly!!!,

I am only a few years younger than you. I do not recall anything about an impending ice age. Of course science now has tools in orbit that measure better and computers that analyze data better, so maybe outlooks changed with knowledge.
Acid rain has mostly been averted by limiting the burning of coal and increasing the scrubbing of smokestack output from fossil fuel producers and the power plants that rely on it. So again, gee things change and CAN have positive outcomes.
Science can be a positive, but the idea of replacing trees with carbon reduction air cleaning units is a stupid idea coming from science. Kind of like big pharma, treat the symptoms, do not treat the problem… equals failed missions, but lots of money earned for the companies.

It was in a Newsweek article on April 28, 1975. Other publications ran similar stories about a cooling world. Science is better today and will be better in ten years, fifty years, 100 years, etc. There is much we both know and don’t know about climate. We do know that clean air and clean water are good. We also know, although some on the fringes won’t admit, that fossil fuels have had an immensely positive impact on our lives.
A common sense approach would be to move forward and explore new ways of creating energy with minimal impact to the environment. That doesn’t mean zero fossil fuels as some on the far end of the spectrum would promote. Some who put all their faith in solar ignore the devastating impacts to the environment that solar brings, from mining, to land use, to disposal. But to think that in fifty, 100, 200 years we couldn’t develop technologies that would allow us to have cleaner energy is selling us short.

This ”Climate Change” initiative is creating nothing but FEAR, unsubstantiated FEAR in our youth… The ”Weather” changes every day, week & year, depending on the Rotation of the Earth… Our kids are becoming PARANOID over this. The World will NOT end in 12 years either …Despite what the Liberals say… There’s a lot of people making money off of this too… Al Gore made a TON of money years back, Global Warming..

Magnetlady. It’s been pointed out a million times that “climate” and “weather” are 2 distinct things. But, somehow you missed it.
“…depending on the Rotation of the Earth”??? You wrote that. So, sometimes the earth rotates one way then the other way or does it speed up and slow down?
You better stay away from that of which you know nothing.
Our youth is better informed than you are. And you are PARANOID of knowledge.
