Ax-wielding man killed in deputy-involved shooting in Lancaster

LANCASTER – A man armed with a large ax was killed in a deputy-involved shooting in Lancaster Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The shooting happened around 7 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, after Lancaster Sheriff’s Station deputies responded to a “family disturbance call” on the 3000 block of Kaylyn Street, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

“Upon their arrival, they made contact with individuals at the residence. While inside the location, deputies encountered the suspect, who had armed himself with a large ax, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred,” the news release states.

The man was struck multiple times in the upper torso and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff’s news release. His identity has not yet been released pending next of kin notification.

No deputies were injured in the incident.

There is no further information at this time and the investigation is ongoing, sheriff’s officials said.

  1. I’m just dying to know why this idiot Lancaster copper couldn’t just pepper spray or tazer the sixty something year old? Was he or she threatened by the look of anger or mental disturbance on his face? Lancaster cops are easily threatened by face value which is pathetic on their part. Weren’t they taught to look at the assailant from the neck down? Unless the full story comes out, im just gonna speculate that that copper was just a typical punk ignoranus.

Doesn’t matter if he had “mental issues” or not, if there was any danger to the officer or the public these are the consequences, i was a victim of a knife wielding “Mentally Ill” person about a year ago, if the police officer didn’t arrive at the moment he did, and shoot the suspect, i wouldn’t be here today. Granted i completely understand that there are some trigger happy officers, but if there is a weapon involved, i repeat these are the consequences.

    • People who tell citizens to carry guns illegally and shoot homeless people if they rob you have mental issues as well.

      • Just curious: What are you supposed to do if you get robbed? Happily comply? Beg for mercy? Resist and get shot or stabbed?

Ricky was a great guy,he was somebody’s husband,father, brother,he had tons of friends down here in venice.i met Ricky in the second grade at Westminster ave school he was very protective of the smaller kids everyone loved Rick,I think the police killed a hell of a good guy,they should have aquired a mental profile on Rick before going in half cocked,there are ways to generate such a profile.the area super visor should be liable for killing a hell of a wonderful guy

    For a police involved murder I think it makes sense to get as many sides as possible. Based on the comments, the public believes the guy was an ax wielding maniac without knowing the facts of the situation. Mental illness could be involved and for all we know the Sheriffs saw his mental illness as aggression and murdered him.

    • That’s how it works. You get the sanitized agreed upon tale from the LACSD, and you can ask the dead guy all the questions you want. It’s always easier to get away with murder than assault because in a murder there’s one less witness. When the cops shoot someone the only witnesses are always gonna be cops, who will vouch for each other every time no matter what.

    Did the AV TIMES listen to the 911 caller? The Psychiatric Emergency Teams (PET) was called first and was instructed to call 911 due to his condition. The female resident did the right thing but this is what happens, imagine the guilt she may feel…. Mental Health is an ongoing illness which can start at different stages in Life, this man was 62yrs old

I got threatened with six years in prison and lost four months of my life for defending myself against a knife wielding man along with two others on my property and two others on the street in front of my property with a bb gun… A damn bb gun. I didnt have a phone nearby to plead for help. One of their friends called the cops after they ran like a bunch of [removed]less cowards and I became the bad guy because these low life lancaster cop pigs thought that I was the one provoking them when I didnt even know those idiot tweekers nor did I want to. Damn you lancaster cop pigs for that. You took a part of my life away that Ill never get back. You do not deserve to be aknowleged as an entity of authority. Its sad that Im gonna get hurt by you pigs trying to prove that. I should just stay quiet and leave these poor lancaster law men alone. they have so much on their dirty plate that Im just an inconvenience to the justice system that these sodomite commys pretend to uphold.
