LOS ANGELES – A bond measure to build a new, state-of-the-art Antelope Valley Hospital to serve the region’s 500,000 residents was defeated Tuesday.
Measure AV would have authorized the Antelope Valley Healthcare District to issue 30-Year General Obligation Bonds to keep Antelope Valley Hospital and its trauma center from closing by building a new hospital meeting California’s Earthquake Standards.
The new hospital would have allowed the region to have access to new technology, a lifesaving trauma center, the best doctors and nurses and reduced Emergency Room wait times, according to AV Hospital officials.
But the majority of voters rejected Measure AV.
According to unofficial results from Tuesday’s election, 50.12% (20,976) voted “No” on Measure AV, and 49.88% (20,876) voted “Yes”.
The measure required at least two-thirds of the vote for approval.

The board just wants something new. If you lived in this valley for some time you will know new big buildings don’t attract high talent or businesses in the AV. Were a town of 500,000 yet the ads claim 140,000 patients seen a year. The numbers dont add up for funding a new hospital yet. Well have a new expensive hospital building with half the rooms empty for years because there will be no money left to higher new staff while tax payers fork out the cash.

As a former health care worker from another city this is urgent. This community needs a state of the art safe hospital if not as another commenter stated we will all be impacted by NOT having our health concerns taken care of. None of us are exempt from a health crisis. Until you have had to travel hours to see your critical loved one or you yourself are so ill that all you want is to feel better now and to be told you have to be transferred away from your community for proper Healthcare will any of you know what a difference it makes to have proper facilities within reach. Instead of us moving forward we are going backwards our local government better deal with this issue because they are not exempt from serious illness.
Alby says
God knows, you’ll create serious illness just to get your state of the art hospital. You are not exempt from your past stupidities with AV patients. And dont use covid-19 as an excuse either.
Carlos says
We have some of the highest taxes in Los Angeles county. Retrofit and move on.
Ignacio P. says
You are correct. I can’t, as most of the AV cannot afford any more taxes. We already pay for the homeless junkies, the politicians, the illegals, the lazy, etc.
Jason Zink says
The AV Health Care Board should all resign with defeated measure in same for not getting support. If we do not build a New State of the Art Hospital our Valley will suffer to attract health care talent to improve and save our lives and keep our kids to stay in AV. We will not be able to attract companies and investor’s to create badly needed AV jobs. What do you the citizens want to do….die waiting and suffering in a ER hell hole or try to improve our Valley for us and our kids? As always our AV Leadership did a terrible job promoting our Valley forward!
Need a better visionary unitied plan for November 2020 Vote our the citizens will vote it down again!
