Man killed in deputy-involved shooting in Lancaster, demonstration follows [updated]

LANCASTER – An investigation is underway into a deadly deputy-involved shooting in Lancaster Friday night.

The shooting happened around 7:48 p.m. Friday, May 29, on the 1700 block of West Avenue K, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

“Deputies observed a suspect, male white adult, walking eastbound on the sidewalk. As deputies contacted the suspect they saw he had a firearm in his hand. An altercation with the suspect ensued and the suspect was taken to the ground, during which time a deputy-involved shooting occurred,” the news release states.

The suspect was hit and taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released.  No deputies were injured in the incident.

“A replica firearm was recovered at the scene,” the sheriff’s news release states.

Shortly after the incident, dozens of demonstrators arrived on the scene, apparently coming from Lancaster Boulevard, where a demonstration against police brutality had been taking place following the police-related death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

The local demonstration was peaceful, no arrests were made, and the crowd was dispersed between 1:30 and  2 a.m. Saturday, May 30, according to a watch commander at the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station.

UPDATE: The deceased has been identified as 39-year-old Robert Colvin of Rosamond, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

  3. I’ve got a lot of issues with this story, so ill try to not go off on a rant and keep it short.

    For starters I’ve read all the comments and can say that a decent amount of people are decent people out there with a good head on there shoulders. Then there’s the other 65% who just perpetuate the same old ignorance year after year.

    Why any group of people who are pretesting against police racism would give two cares about what happened to this man is redundant as he was obviously a racist himself. Running around hooker hotels loaded off dope with a fake gun is a good way to meet your demise.

    Statistically across the nation the majority of law enforcement shootings and actions that result in fatality are white officers shooting white men. I’m aware that’s not a overly popular idea but its reality. It doesn’t sell headlines though, so the media doesn’t play it 24 hours a day.

    As far as looting and peaceful protesting are concerned, they are 2 different animals. People should know looting is wrong and honestly its dangerous. It only takes one time to try and loot the wrong store and you’re gonna come right back out the front door in a body bag with no loot.

    As far as the Black Lives Matter, Blue Lives Matter, All Lives matter I’m calling bs on all of it. We live in a society now a days where NO LIVES MATTER. No one really seems to care to help there fellow man or come up with viable solutions to the problems we face daily. Instead just point a finger at someone who’s the opposite color, call them racist and live in disillusion. It’s a plague and it’s slowly destroying this country. As long as Uncle Sam gets his tax money though he doesn’t care.

    I’m not condoning what occurred in MN but I’m also not gonna condone criminal activity. The main officer who killed that man deserves the strictest punishment available. The police department should also face scrutiny as this man had previously killed someone in a suspicious manner and was cleared to go back to duty and do it again. That doesn’t justify destroying your own community and robbing local businesses in the name of justice.

    Stay safe out there people of all ages, colors, sexual preferences and religions. This is all a ploy to divide a nation and its working perfectly. Once they divide us all and take all of our guns then they can enslave us. On the bright side at least we have something else to watch instead of COVID-19…

I read your post and came to the conclusion that you really don’t understand the problem and are lashing out at the result. As for the protesters, most of them are peaceful and expressing their anger. Then you have the opportunist who are only interested in causing chaos and looting. I agree they should be prosecuted.         • Most so called “criminal acts” committed by police were the result of prior criminal acts committed by those who had to be arrested.

          The police do not seek out lawful black men to shoot them, sit on their necks or suffocate them.

          If you resist arrest, expect enough force to try and get you arrested. If you fight with a police officer expect to get them to fight you back. If you try to steal their guns or shoot at them, expect them to shoot back.

          If you mind your manners, act within the limits of the law, stop when you are ordered to stop,, and deal with those situations like a responsobke human being, you can be certain that you will not have to deal with any “criminal acts committed by the police”!

          If instead, you act like an animal, trust that you will be treated like an animal whereby you can expect consequences that are likely to work against you, not for you.

  14. What that shooting had in common with the Floyd George shooting and why protesters would protest it is beyond me. In the first place, the man was not black. Secondly, he was carrying what appeared to be a weapon, although later it turned out to be a replica. He was instructed numerous times to drop the weapon and did not comply. The man was shot when he pointed the weapon at the Sheriff.

    The entire protests thing makes no sense to me. They arrested the officers responsible for the death of Floyd George and have indicted them for murder. What more do they want to happen? The protests are occurring here in Palmdale today. They were blocking intersections near Marie Kerr Park this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. driving in U turns in the intersection while some cars blocked Westbound Traffic. Fortunately, I was able to make a U turn at the intersection because I was driving East not West. There were over 200 protesters marching with signs headed into and walking near Marie Kerr Park carrying signs saying Black Lives Matter and in support of the Floyd George investigation. Other than blocking traffic the protest seemed peaceful, so far. I am guessing that they converged on Palmdale because Mayor Garcetti of Los Angeles declared a curfew there and no such action has been taken yet in this area.

Crime happens every day..It is not fair we can not depend whole heartedly in officers to do there jobs..Who is patrolling the police?..Who has our backs?..Who can we depend on?..The police Dept has to change..Communities need to be involved..Why not involve Communities to patrol our own areas and Deal with petty crimes..Police do more trainings and deal with hard core crimes..there has to be a middle ground..People have to feel safe..people have to ne involved..People need to help guide the lost children on the right path..People need to help each other..Those guardians who allow the child/dren out after a curfew or even out during this pandemic need to Step Up..Nothing will change without People. There should be no color lines.

    • I cannot comment on your experience, but, where I live here in Palmdale, the Sheriff Deputies have done an excellent job of patrolling and responding. Our crime rate is way down and all my neighbors leave their garage doors open often at night, and children play in the streets here. I am not saying that some areas of Palmdale are not having problems. But, that has not been my experience.

    • It’s not that were afraid, its just that people in the AV don’t care. You go to Santa Clarita and the issue of littering, graffiti, etc is quickly resolved, contrast in the AV, those same problems go unresolved for weeks, despite individuals making complaints. Once upon a time, The Antelope Valley was like Santa Clarita, littering, graffiti, and other issues were rare, nowadays there unfortunately pretty common, yet I wouldn’t say we are at the levels of Compton. Compton is at a whole another level. And I’m hoping the AV never gets to that level, because I honestly LOVE the AV, its a getaway for me from the whole pretend scene of individuals in LA and Santa Clarita.

    • Ron, the AV is nothing like Compton. I’ve done filming in Compton and Compton and the AV are nothing alike. Here in the AV, I can go to most gas station in most parts of the AV (minus some parts of East Palmdale) And not be subjected to a gated kiosk, where I have to give my credit card to an clerk that is behind a bulletproof glass with bullet holes visible to any paying customers and the attendant visibly scared if there is more than two individuals in front of her/him despite us not looking like thugs.

  23. Floyd would have NEVER encountered his horrific fate that day if he chose real money over counterfeit money. He committed a crime. The police officers would not have been called if he was not a criminal. The crime does not fit the punishment, but are you willing to possibly risk your life using fake money? If he were an honest man, this would have never happened.

Big difference. The Officer committed a crime (murder) and WAS arrested. It’s very telling you made no mention of the Officer.   32. This is biased journalism. This was a very scary event. Sounds of gun shots or fireworks went off every so often from 8:00-1:00am. The surrounding neighborhoods were terrified for what was going to happen next. Do you really call, throwing cans and other objects at the police officers as, “friendly protesting”? All of this was happening, meanwhile, target boarded up their walls and loud screeches from cars performing “donuts” around the 17th street intersection commenced. Please write unbiased articles by telling both sides of the story. I would not call that friendly protesting. I’d call that an agitated environment. This article also left out that the deputies tried to resuscitate the adult male by performing CPR until the ambulance arrived, each one of them taking turns. I live close to the area where it happened and I got frightened of the growing crowd especially when they are throwing rocks and bottles at the deputies!!! I have a 2 YEAR OLD daughter in my home and I am unarmed to any harm that can come into my home!!! Even target boarded up their store to be safe! This was not a peaceful protest!!! Our deputies did a good job. Criminals need to stop trying to find an opportunity to loot and destroy businesses who worked hard!!!

  33. The title is inaccurate, a peaceful protest began on The Blvd a hour and a half before the incident. They travelled down 10th to K prior to the shooting. Your title makes it appear the shooting happened then the protest.

  34. My grandson and I were on the way to Lowe’s, when we saw a white male lying on the ground bleeding and two Sherriff’s, just standing there doing nothing. We heard no ambulance but we saw about a dozen police cars coming west on Ave. K towards the area. We left Lowe’s about 45 minutes later, and saw the area blocked off with many many police vehicles, not many pedestrians, but one girl cam running from across the street yelling a blind black mam was shot 5 times, so we yelled out correcting her that the mam was white. We continued going home, but wondered why still no ambulance to help the man, and what he did to deserve this?
