Newsom orders closure of indoor activity at gyms, salons, churches

LOS ANGELES – Citing rising rates of people testing positive for the coronavirus and jumps in hospitalizations, Gov. Gavin Newsom Monday ordered the closure of indoor operations at gyms, hair salons, houses of worship, personal-care services, malls and non-critical office settings.

The order affects all 30 counties on the state’s pandemic monitoring list — including Los Angeles County.

Newsom also ordered the statewide closure of indoor operations at restaurants, wineries, movie theaters, zoos, aquariums, family entertainment centers and card rooms — and the full closure of all bars. Those restrictions were already in place in counties on the state’s monitoring list, but the new order extended them statewide.

Newsom reiterated that the state’s enactment of health-restrictions was being handled with a “dimmer switch,” meaning the severity of the orders can be adjusted upward or downward based on the latest virus statistics and “trendlines.”

The state has been seeing record numbers of infections in recent days, along with increasing hospitalizations. As of Monday, Newsom said 6,485 were hospitalized across the state due to the coronavirus. The seven-day rolling average of people testing positive for the virus was 7.7%, Newsom said.

“This virus is not going away anytime soon,” Newsom said. “I hope all of us recognize that if we were still connected to some notion that somehow when it gets warm it’s going to go away or somehow it’s going to take summer months or weekends off, this virus has done neither. You’ve seen parts of the country with very hot … weather where you’re seeing an increase in positivity rates, an increase in hospitalizations and ICUs. Here in the state of California as we’re seeing triple-digit weather in many parts of our state, we’re still seeing an increase in the positivity rate, the community transmission. We’re seeing an increase in the spread of the virus.”

  2. I’m a conservative and I believe Governor Newsom is doing the best he can. This is something we haven’t dealt with for a very long time. I keep hearing about individual rights, well, why don’t we consider other peoples rights and wear our masks where they are required.

    • Did you know Newsome had Republican backing for awhile? Backed by the Republican party for the low sum of $500.
      Labor leaders disagreed with him. Many of his ideas come straight from the conservative handbook.
      In 2003 he ran as a moderate, but opponents called him a conservative.
      He resisted the sanctuary city rule while mayor.

      Where am I going with this… politicians change ideals often. Politicians often just want power, and may change stride to get it. So feel free to vote “Conservative” based on your definition of “conservative” it may not be the same as the person you are voting for.

        • While I do not like Trump, I also find it distasteful to use peoples death in politics.
          No world leader could have stopped Covid, or its repercussions.

          That said, doing what health officials suggested from the start and enforcing it would have gone a long way to slow the spread, which is the bottom line, slowing it, there is no stopping it at the moment since there is no vaccine.

            Do you recall a shutdown of the economy in previous pandemic?

            Actually, the federal government shutdowns in the last few years have been the Republicans shutting it down to get their way on an issue. But, when it is important to shutdown not only the government but nearly everything, they squawk like Republicans do.

            To save lives, they want to keep things open. To get their way, they shut down the federal govenmment. Upside-down and backward. That’s the GOP.

            The southern red state governors have followed Trump’s lead and now they are paying dearly for it. It’s fun to see videos of Florida’s and Texas’s governors from 2 months ago downplaying the threat and now having to do what was needed 2 months ago. Florida’s DeSantis made a fool of himself. Same with Oklahoma’s governor who later contracted the virus.

            Why do people have to wait for their elected leaders to get sick themselves before they take action. That’s not leadership. It’s the GOP way.

      Have a neighbor, has two small businesses.
      The welding has dropped off.
      The cleaning/support services has taken off.
      Some businesses will close for now, and reopen when things get better.
      Some businesses will close and their owners will work for others.
      On a smaller scale, this happens all the time.
      We are just seeing it all big and scary due to a pandemic scale.
