LANCASTER – Authorities have identified the man who died in a Lancaster traffic collision Saturday afternoon, saying he had been driving the wrong way down the highway.
Steve H. Gonzalez, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, which happened around 3:20 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, on West Avenue D near 45th Street West, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Gonzalez was driving a 2017 Honda Civic eastbound, but in the westbound lanes of West Avenue D when he collided with a 2009 International Pro Star, driven by 68-year-old Victorville resident Alson R. Hall, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Hall tried to swerve right to avoid the wrong-way driver, but the front left of the Civic slammed into his trailer, killing Gonzalez, according to the CHP.
Authorities are investigating whether drugs or alcohol played a part in the fatal crash. Authorities said the road was dry and the visibility was clear at the time.
“Tragically, another life was lost here in the Antelope Valley,” said Officer B. Taggart, of the Antelope Valley California Highway Patrol. “This is the 24th person killed so far this year.”
A passenger in the Civic, 19-year-old Lancaster resident Gabriella Itovargas, was taken to Antelope Valley Hospital with minor injuries.
Anyone with information regarding this collision is encouraged to contact Officer Taggart at the Antelope Valley CHP Office at 661-948-8541.

Using anothers name to hide behind cruel comments that are even against my standards. All lives matter even when getting verbally dumped on. Whoever you are, you are sick for wishing car accident carnage on someone you dont know. Have you ever witnessed carnage from an accident? Have you witnessed loved ones in devastation? Seeing that aspect of it all can rip the soul out from your knees. You’re mentally disturbed… and challenged.

Calling a white person a “Karen” is racist. You need to be given sensitivity training so you will understand how your micro aggressions hurt people.
AV’er in Idaho says
So David… you think it is stupid. You are right, which is exactly the point. Everything is offensive or racist in today’s world to the point that being called racist doesn’t mean anything. Oh…love that you threw in your assessment of my “privilege “. You have no idea if I’m black or white, male or female, yet your prejudice demands that I am a white male. That highlights your racist view of the world. So David…. who is the real dope here? It’s you David. You took the bait hook, line and sinker.
David says
Check again dope. I didn’t say you’re a white male. You don’t have to be a white male to be privileged. Whose the one highlighting the racist views of the world now Karen?

How do we assume, what race any of the above commentators are? The irony in that, Jeeze!!! The unnecessary hate and, or negativity these days is disturbing, on so many levels!!! I can never read an article, or public feed, without seeing someone, or so many saying things that somehow turn into unrelated nonsense, that gets waaaY off track… Where are we in America today? We’ve become a nation of confusion, feeding off the phantoms, of a nonsensical, distorted, reality… We can’t even have a normal conversation without it turning into some hate debacle, or racial controversy, or even more frustrating, it’s insanely becoming normal to insert politics into, even the simplest of conversations. We could be commenting on (for example) bicycles, and it turns into a hate debate, or some political battle field, of some sort. Ive never seen anything like this, before! We are so far from normalcy, and unity in our nation, that we can’t even justify the argument anymore. The entire country needs a reset, back to reality. The behavior is anything, but American… The values, standards, and morals seem to have taken the wrong turn somewhere… Now off roading, and all but a broken compass, and geographically challenged passengers, with no real certainty or knowledge of where they are or headed… Getting back will take time, patience, and good observation, but its possible. Or proceed further, on that bumpy road, without real direction, and a driver who rather not accept directions and, or advise, from others, or allow someone to take wheel, who can help bring us back to civilization, or familiar territory… Otherwise, may veer off a cliff, without warning, or time to disembark. I can’t take that ride! I’d rather walk. Might be late. But I’ll be home, safe and sound. Humble, whole, and sane! The world is negative, and full of confusion and deceit… Don’t subject yourself to be victim of, or voluntarily add, to the problem.

… same people rioting our cities, looting and shoplifting small business into bankruptcy, for millennials and post-millennials, texting-while-driving is considered a birthright. If people have to die, so be it.
Esther says
What are you talking about? We don’t know how this accident occurred… Be it alcohol, anger, maybe a seizure, mechanical malfunction, or even a 3rd vehicle could of caused it, then took off, and no eye witness of the matter. Or maybe a suicidal rabbit ran out into the road… Regardless, a man is dead! It’s hard to comprehend, the lack of empathy, in today’s society, but the problem is becoming more aggressive and obvious to even those who are clueless to the realm of negativity. But the problem, as a whole, is people tend to go off assumption, opinion, under informed word of mouth, or often unrealistic, manufactured, conspiracy-theories, which usually, lack any basis to reality, or facts. The ignorance today is so extreme, it’s beyond bliss.
Esther says
Or, maybe the dead guy was exercising his freedom rights, and decided that wearing a seatbelt, was violating them… So maybe he wasn’t wearing one, in protest to the safety guidance and laws put in place by the government, which are trying to look out for everyone’s safety and security, which is their sworn obligation. With today’s ridiculous behaviors, even the stupidest possibilities should be explored.
