PALMDALE – A pet cat that went missing 15 years ago was found in Palmdale this week and reunited with its owner, thanks to microchip and the diligence of an animal care officer. The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control shared the good news in a press release issued Thursday. Read it below:
On Feb. 21, 2021, Officer Luis Leal from the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control received a field call to assist an injured stray cat on the front porch of a Palmdale residence. Officer Leal immediately responded and brought the cat back to the Palmdale Animal Care Center where she was cared for and despite her injury, she was found very alert, healthy, happy and friendly, interacting very well with the staff.
Fortunately, Officer Leal scanned the cat and was able to locate a microchip! The microchip traced back to a gentleman named Charles. Initially, Officer Leal made an attempt to contact the owner but was unsuccessful. As a result, Officer Leal left a message for Charles that his cat was found and is being cared for at the Palmdale animal care center.
On Feb. 22, 2021, Charles called back and spoke with Sergeant Valles at the Palmdale animal care center. Charles was very confused and asked why he was receiving a call from animal control because he does not own any pets. Then, Sergeant Valles advised him that a cat was found in the City of Palmdale and her microchip information was linked back him.
Charles was completely shocked to hear that his cat “Brandy” was located as he had not seen her in over 15 years. He was so happy you could hear it in his voice over the phone. Charles was very emotional and continued sharing with Sergeant Valles that “Brandy” went missing over 15 years ago and he never thought he would see her again.
Sergeant Valles then asked Charles if he was interested in picking up “Brandy” and taking her home. His reply was “yes, adoption is forever”.
Charles was very pleased to hear that “Brandy” was alive, alert and in overall good health. When Charles arrived at the Palmdale animal care center, he was greeted and directed by Palmdale’s compassionate and friendly care center staff to spend time with “Brandy” in the “Meet Your Kitty” room. Once reunited with “Brandy” there was an instant connection that appeared to be unbroken even though Charles and “Brandy” only shared a few months before being separated for so long.
It was wonderful to see the beautiful reunion! DACC encourages all pet owners to microchip their pets because without the microchipping of “Brandy” and the diligence of the officer, this reunion would have been impossible.”

Whomever has cared for the cat must be devastated and heart broken. It was probably an indoor cat that got out and picked up by animal control before it could find it’s way back home. If he really cares about the cat he’d try finding the “owners” and return it.

What happened here is an extreme life event. Even 99% of the best luck doesn’t happen this way. One reason is that a 15 year time happenstance allows for even many young people to be deceased by now. And it also suggests that the little cat couldn’t have been too far away throughout the entire marathon ordeal.

I only wish Brandy could talk to say what She’d been doing these past 15 years. Somebody must have taken care of her over the years. I love happy endings!
Seriously says
But kinda bittersweet ending for the person that had taken care of her all those years.

I Agree!! What about the person who invested 15 years of Love, Care, Expenses & Vet bills?? Most cats don’t live that long without really good CARE!! So how long did the person have the cat before it went missing?? A few months?? Seriously!! The bond between the “15 year Owner” and kitty is more profound then a “few months” of care… I’ve gone door to door searching for a pet’s owner multiple times and with success only a few times…yet never have I had anyone knock on my door about their lost pet.
Chipped and not read says
They should have had the chip read and the cat returned 15 years ago then.

That’s really cool.

The cat that was lost for 15 years and reunited with the owner is just so overwhelming and God sent. It’s a miracle for this cat to be found alive, even though it was injured somehow, and thank you to the person to call the animal shelter about a stray cat on their porch. And thank you for the animal shelter officer for responding to that call and the animal care shelter for scanning and finding the microchip and taking good care of the cat and contacting Charles. This is a blessing and a miracle for Charles and his cat “ Brandy”. Please don’t let her out of your sight and just enjoy each other and enjoy every day together. This is so heartwarming and so glad it had a happy ending. This brought happy tears to my eyes. I’ve been a animal lover ever since I was a small child and I still will always be! God bless you both and animal officer and shelter and staff. Amen ❤️
