Last year, grants were awarded for water treatment projects aimed aimed at improving the quality of water in Antelope Valley. One award of $350,000 was for a project to remove chemicals formed during disinfection from treated wastewater. The safe treatment of wastewater is vital in any region, but especially in dry areas like Antelope Valley, where drought conditions are common and can increase the stress on smaller water systems. As well as increasing drinking water supply, the safe removal and treatment of wastewater from regional sewer systems, the storage containers of recreational vehicles, and the septic tanks of unconnected homes is vital for a healthy environment. All these systems need regular maintenance and inspections in order to keep them free of blockages and to avoid downtime for repairs.
Regular Maintenance Of Sewage Systems
Although individual septic systems are less prevalent in California, the EPA estimates around 10% of homes use them to manage their wastewater. Regular maintenance of a septic tank and home sewage system is essential in order to avoid any long-term problems. To check drains, sewers and water pipes, both in a domestic setting and as part of a larger public system, visual inspection tools can easily identify potential blockages or necessary repairs. SPI 4mm borescopes can be used with interchangeable probes, and articulated to bend up to 180° degrees. Instruments with greater flexibility and high definition screens can quickly provide plumbers and engineers feedback on the state of pipes and drains, and save unnecessary repair downtime.
Safe Disposal Of Wastewater From RVs
Like some permanent homes, recreational vehicles also have their own storage tanks to hold wastewater, which should be emptied regularly at approved dump stations. The improper disposal of wastewater can be hazardous to health, so it is hoped that a proposed registration system and other innovative solutions could discourage the illegal dumping of wastewater from RVs. In some areas, it may be possible to connect the vehicles to public water and sewage lines for ease of disposal.
Dealing With Sewage Leaks And Spills
Whether due to human error or machine failure, when these sewage systems are compromised, the results can be devastating. In the last six months, there have been two major spillages of sewage in LA County. The most recent in March caused officials to close the area around Newport beach after 1,000 gallons of sewage were spilled from a sewer line. Back in December, a loss of power at a pump station caused a leak of 50 times as much into the Los Cerritos Channel in Long Beach. These leaks highlight the importance of regular inspection and maintenance in order to keep sewage systems working safely and efficiently.
The safe treatment of wastewater is a crucial element of any region’s infrastructure systems. With extra funding for treatment plants, initiatives to encourage the safe disposal of waste, and regular inspection and maintenance of all types of sewage systems, the management of Antelope Valley’s wastewater is improved.
