Recall candidate Larry Elder cuts Venice tour short due to hostile crowds

Republican gubernatorial candidate Larry Elder got a rude welcome during a campaign stop Wednesday in Venice, where critics shouted as he walked through the area and a woman wearing a gorilla mask hurled an egg toward him, then threw punches at an aide who intervened.

The conservative talk show host arrived in Venice around 11:50 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8. A crowd gathered as he walked along the street toward a scheduled tour of a homeless encampment.

As the jeers escalated, video from the scene captured by Spectrum News 1 (see below) showed a woman on a bicycle and wearing a gorilla mask throwing an egg toward Elder, although it did not appear to hit anyone. A man believed to be a member of Elder’s staff approached the masked woman, who screamed in response and can be seen throwing at least two punches at the man. At least one other spectator got in the man’s face and hurled expletives at him.

During the altercation, Elder was quickly rushed into a nearby SUV and driven away from the scene. TMZ reported that a pellet gun was fired during the melee, although it was not captured on video.

Los Angeles Police Department Officer Tony Im said the department was looking into the incident, though no further details were released.

Elder, considered the top Republican candidate in the Sept. 14 recall election, told TMZ at a subsequent campaign stop that he wasn’t expecting a “ticker-tape parade” in Venice, and he attributed the incident to community anger over homelessness.

“There’s a lot of anger, a lot of unhappiness there,” Elder said, referring to the homelessness issue.

“People are angry. They’re frustrated. They want something done,” he told TMZ. “Homeowners want something done. Families want something done. Children that live there, they want something done. This is a danger not only to the homeless people but to the non-homeless people.”

  4. I’m a Democrat and I voted for the recall. I’m personally tired of seeing homeless camps and trash everywhere! I was compassionate about the issue at first, but then I learned how the majority of homeless prefer that lifestyle to being productive. As an environmental minded person, one thing I cannot abide is the amount of trash the homeless generate. They are given brand new clothes and they wear them once and abandon them to leave them strung out everywhere. I also feel like homelessness is a cottage industry for so many NGOs now that it is promoted to keep the “problem” alive and keep the government funding coming in. I’m not the only Democrat who feels this way, by the way. It is a very widespread feeling amongst friends, colleagues, acquaintances and co-workers. Now, are the people who feel the same way I do voting for the recall? That, I can’t answer.

    • The obvious flaw in your reasoning is that for it to make sense the GOP would have to have demonstrated that they have any clue whatever about how to deal with the problem, and they never have done so. Every “plan” the GOP has EVER put forward, anywhere, for dealing with homelessness has involved some iteration of “make them go somewhere else.” That buck eventually stops…somewhere.

      That of course assumes that your reasoning matters. It seems more likely that your entire commentary is predicated on a lie, that being that “I’m a democrat” part. Pro tip, real democrats very seldom take their phrasing straight off of Fox News and the right wing echo chamber, and they have been beating that “cottage industry” canard for months now.

        Take homelessness.

        They pretend they are for the vets yet vets make up a large amount of the homeless population.

        That was easy.

        So is their debt/deficit concern only when Dems are in power.

        • William wants a challenge? Demarcates have been running the state and we have highest gas prices, the highest in taxes. California’s schools are 41th out of the 50 states. That’s just the start of what a great Job your party does. Not to mention Biden is supporting him. Defiantly trust what he has to say when he’s leaving US citizens and allies to die in Afghanistan!

The right is lucky to have an endless supply of easy marks like Josh. They mess up the tax structure, then get gullibe people like Josh to get angry at the other side.             By every economic measure, Democrats outperform Republicans, e.g., GDP, Jobs, Median income, Debt to GDP, Stocks, and Unemployment averaged over time.

            In addition, since the 70s, Republican administrations have had over 100 indictments and many convictions and prison sentences compared to only a couple for the Dems. I posted the totals here somewhere.

        • May be if you include some actual content rather than just “I hate you and you are wrong because I say so” over and over and over it would go better for you. I know you conservatives are fueled on outrage and have to manufacture that feeling of being picked on, but honestly; working within the rules just isn’t that hard.

          Thank you for your honesty in admitting that you are merely attempting to bully people, as opposed to having an actual discussion. Seems to me that the AV Times staff are doing their jobs by removing it, then.

          • If honesty is appreciated, then any objective analysis will show that conservative comments and opinion are moderated the same, but censored and just flat out DELETED at a much higher rate.

            If you can’t accept that fact, you have tarnished your credibility.

    • Just the other day, I went to a liquor store in town and I saw someone offer a bunch of bums food in a bag with fresh vegetables that can revitalize any starving individual thats hungry and needs nutrition. When I exited the store, all that food was thrown onto the driveway and they were asking me for a cigarette or change. I told them to go to hell. I’ve seen very few be so grateful for a chance to have a full balanced nutrition to motivate themselves to move forward. They just want booze, crack and fastfood handouts from chumps that seem to have money and like being glorified. I get the impression that its some kind of theatre that’s meant to push away town progress and keep the poverty pimps pimping. A guy like Obama or Gavin gives them handouts, they believe in hope and change as funds are being abused. A guy like Larry wants to give them a chance to work and build themselves up from where they are, hope and change flies out the window just like unwanted healthy groceries. Its sad to see many help wanted signs at stores yet many are hiding in the desert waiting for nightime to pull a trick on someone. This town needs Kennedy democrats, not socialists that want to spread wealths that they’ve done nothing to earn and treat mother nature like a dumpsite. I’m sure many in this town would welcome Larry in hopes of dealing with such hostile crowds in a legally “unconventional” way if you know what I mean.

          • I didn’t go out of my way at all except for when i drove around the stuff that was thrown everywhere. Some things can’t wait to be typed about on a news forum but rather said when need be at the moment. I feel sorry for the owner that has to clean it up and has more unkind words to say.           • Unfortunately no but I am entitled to opinions like anyone else which is far less damaging than scattering nasty trash everywhere and contributing to the deterioration of this town. It will eventually be up to city officials to fine them for littering like they would with anyone thats struggling to keep up financially. As long as bums choose not to make any kind of legal income(even under the table), city officials won’t care to dig into their pockets and get into their business and they’ll keep turning their heads away.

          • The venue matters. This is a comments section of a news site. I expect people to react to my differences with their opinions and make outrageously hateful comments, which I have no problem returning in kind. Alby crowing about having accosted people out of the blue in a parking lot and telling them to go to hell is a different thing entirely, because of the venue. If I go out this afternoon and find some stranger in a parking lot and tell them to go to hell I would expect to get punched in the face.

    • We need to stop giving away free handouts or the problem will continue. How can you care about the homeless when they don’t care about themselves? This valley would be better off without them and all the drug addicted scumbags. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

  5. Most of our local elected City Council members line up behind this inexperienced wanna be. The AV is changing for the better as the hypocrisy has been in charge for way too many years. Let’s try anything different that these self serving leaders.

You think spending $10 million dollars on a spy plane that’s best use was training Lancaster’s former police chief to fly? The AV is changing for the better if you are on team Rex. You will get no bid contracts, business sent your way, and charges dismissed. Our roads are covered with some sort of black paint which does nothing. Homeless people line the BLVD and the desert off 14. We are in the crosshairs of the DOJ thanks to Rex’s big mouth. We are a laughing stock with a mayor who went on TV and lied about a fake sheriff shooting and who thinks birdie sounds lower crime.

        Once the AV is flushed of Rex and his cronies then maybe we will see change for the better. Whatever you are smoking please share………………………

        • “Changing for the better” depends on how long a view you take. For example I can say with absolute certainty that if this was the Antelope Valley of my youth there is nothing that would convince me to live here, or pay the slightest attention. When I left at seventeen I expected to come back once in a while to visit my parents but otherwise I had absolutely no interest in the place.

          Now my home is technically Ridgecrest and I think it is a pretty exact duplicate of the AV circa my time in high school. When people bring me my mail I check to make sure it hasn’t changed. The last time I was actually there was…right after the earthquakes I guess?

  7. larry is the best thing going to save this state; that’s why the dems are scared to death, and pulling out all the dirty tricks possible to stop him. vote yes on recall and larry elder! look at the MILLIONS spent trying to derail the people’s will and choice. oh, and boycott netflix; reed hastings, netflix ceo, is one of the biggest contributors of the no recall crowd.

    • “The people’s will” does not mean the same thing as “the will of the 12% of the population that signed the recall petition.” The last solid indication of “the people’s will” was when Newsom cruised to a twenty point margin. If this Republican stunt somehow pans out for them you can be sure that “the people’s will” is going to come crashing down on whatever GOP hack gets put in office by some tiny sliver of the electorate.

      As for Larry the talk radio guy…does he even claim to have any qualifications, or is he just another GOP ‘tap the outrage’ candidate?
