LA County looks to develop plan for countering misinformation/disinformation

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to develop a countywide strategy for combating and countering misinformation and disinformation across a variety of fronts, including issues such as elections and immigration.

Supervisors Hilda Solis and Sheila Kuehl co-authored the motion, citing well-publicized issues of misinformation surrounding topics such as the 2020 presidential election, COVID-19 and other matters. The motion directs the county CEO to develop a “communications toolkit” that individual departments can use to counter such misinformation campaigns. It also calls for the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s Office to develop a public education campaign aimed at building trust in the electoral process.

“Disinformation has made the COVID-19 pandemic even more deadly,” Kuehl said in a statement. “It has undermined our democratic processes, and created a climate in which attacks on the basis of race, ethnicity, and gender have been alarmingly normalized. Today’s action is a first step in our effort to fight back. It will put in motion several different strategies for ensuring that our democracy, our public health and our public trust are not further undermined by irresponsible individuals trying to make money or gain power by spreading demonstrably false information.”

The motion also calls for the hiring of a consultant to “define the types of misinformation/disinformation that demand a county departmental response.” It also calls for the county to send letters signed by board members to the leaders of “major social media, instant messaging and other relevant companies” to ask that they invest in “online education campaigns and platform product features to increase users’ awareness and resistance to online misinformation, including investments in tackling misinformation in content that is culturally appropriate and available in multiple languages.”

Supervisor Kathryn Barger voted against the motion, saying she agreed with its overall intent, but questioned the plan’s effectiveness. She also suggested that hiring a consultant wasn’t the way to address the issue.

          • At what? There is no world war three in progress and certainly no evidence that “Biden caused it” if it was happening. There is a war in Ukraine, which was clearly directly caused by Putin. If there is any blame on an American president for setting the stage, Russian justifications for their war points to Trump, not Biden. I also see an economy perking along in way better shape than it was when Biden took office.

            So if you wanna back up your name calling with some facts, get to it. Otherwise crawl back in your hole and tell yourself your fantasies.

    The CDC said half of Californians live in high-risk counties. But the agency apparently relied on outdated numbers of COVID infections and patients.

The information from our LA County Public Health Director, who is dictating how you live our lives, has no virologist, molecular biologist, or epidemiologist background or even a medical degree! She has a PhD in Social Welfare so our information will be 100% true honest and correct. That along with the political asperations of the losers on the LA County Board of Stupidvisors, how can you doubt what we say?

            Pointing out that Trump was banned from Twitter for lying constantly is just part of the topic here (combating misinformation and disinformation). Trump didn’t “misspeak”… he lied. He was informed (just in case it was really an honest mistake) and he repeated the lies. We now can see from e-mails exchanged among his staff that he was informed by an immense laundry list of advisors that what he was saying wasn’t true, and he continued to lie. He was suspended from Twitter and was informed that it was for lying and that Twitter was not willing to have their platform used that way, and when he was allowed back on he resumed the same lying.

            We now have access to evidence that this campaign of lies was intentional disinformation and part of a plan of action that can lead to the participants being charged with seditious conspiracy under US law. How you, or anyone, can compare that to a speaker misspeaking a word is honestly baffling.

In fact, this is the key to getting your balance back: Ask yourself, If Obama had (or had not) done it, would I still be okay (or not okay) with it? If the answer is yes, then you’re likely balanced in your position. If the answer is no, then you might want to investigate your position a bit further to even out the equation.

          With a significant potential for a WWIII with a nuclear armed opponent looming, it’s a good time to get back to our commonalities, instead of our differences. Balance can help to get over disagreement without hatred.
