      You will find a recently developed strip mall or commercial center surrounded by vast stretches of empty scrub.
      Intolerably hot in summer, chilled in the winter, the residents there are hardy folk, but hardly classify as Polyannas.
      Whatever Polyanna is, one thing I can say for shure…she is not among them.

  9. A friend in Louisian knows a guy who noticed someone was stealing his firewood from his backyard. So, he drilled a hole in a log and stuffed it with gunpowder and put it back in the pile.

    I like that kind of thinking. Cajun justice.

    Reminds me of the Democrats promoting the craziest Republicans in their primaries so they could win and be easier to beat in the general. The Republicans took the logs loaded with gunpowder and voila. They’re so easy.

    • That would make a nifty momentary plume of flame, but unless he backfilled it with cement the powder in the wooden chamber would never come under enough pressure to rupture the wood fibers.

      You see, wood is a great building material because of it’s strength to weight ratio, which is among very respectable numbers as the density of the lignin becomes greater.

      It is possible to change a softwood to a chemically modified, higher lignin material and make the resulting properties as durable as stone. The process is similar to what happens in nature and the result in nature is called “petrified wood’.

    • If the AV forms it’s own county, then the voters of Lancaster and Palmdale, who vastly outnumber the residents in the unincorporated areas, would effectively be electing the board of supervisors for this new county. If you lived in an unincorporated area and looked t the city governments those people have been electing would you trust them to do that?

He is more concerned about giving Chinese companies opportunities to open businesses in an area long known for national defense than the security of the country. Don’t underestimate the power of Parris. He has a lot of money for this area and uses it to buy influence, council seats, board seats, congressional seats, protection, and his form of loyalty. Unless the people wake up, his dominance will continue.

  14. Tonight will be a beautiful moment in Palmdale’s history. The mayor who gave the keys to the city to Rex and the Fern Street Mafia will no longer be in office. After taking money and direction from Rex, he faithfully executed his directed duties and had the city attorney fired, pushed through the new power agreement where Lancaster would rake in money from Palmdale ratepayers, and helped direct $7.6 million dollars from Palmdale to Lancaster for projects. Once Rex was done with him, he dumped him. He leaves the city in disarray with million dollar lawsuits by former employees and no direction at all. Larry Chimbole is spinning in his grave. Now he is AV Hospital’s headache. Good riddance.

    • Actually a quick check of the campaign filings showed that whole group there now is loaded down with Lancaster bucks! Word is Bettencourt scored something like 35 grand from Fern Street syndicate, and how much more from the ledbottom money laundering cabal. And that’s just the money they want you to see. They are experts at the laundromat game.

      • Actually a quick check shows Bettencourt got about $5,700 in contributions, and none of it was from Lancaster. Lancaster politicians and the sham AV Taxpayers group did donate to Hoffbauer in the past until they were done with him. Hof screwed up even beyond what the Fern Street Mafia could have hoped for. Now they just pay for Loa, Bishop, Alacarn and Ohlson. They also pay for every other pol in the AV except Michael Rives.

      • I just checked online and Bettencourt didn’t get any money from Lancaster politicians. The rest of them have. Looks like they cut off Hofbauer too. Word is he drove everyone crazy even his own council. You have to be pretty pathetic to have your own council have you removed.

          • Mdme Bettencourt would have to account for her initial coziness with Rex and his gang. I have not forgotten her first campaign, which opened the door for Rex in Palmdale.

            I want the inside scoop on that, first, then I can determine her intentions better. To be fair: Since then, it appears that she has distanced herself a bit from him. I actually hope it turns out to have been an first-timer error for her and she learned what he is in time to separate from his ilk. Her background in criminology would be very valuable for local policymaking IF she is able to keep relatively untainted by Rex & Co.’s corruption(s).

  18. So we have a congressman, and I mean that literally, he is the congressman representing about half of the residents of the AV, who is facing an investigation by the house ethics committee. Does it really make sense to elect him as speaker of the house when one of his first duties if elected is to appoint the members of the house ethics committee? I mean, conflict of interest there seems obvious enough that even a dim bulb should see it.

      • There is some tiny flickering hope somewhere deep in me that wants this to be the moment where some sliver of the elected GOP congress has a moment of clarity and says “forget our insane extremists, lets elect a speaker that will actually try to make the house relevant.” Imagine bills coming out of the house that passed even though bar tramp Boebert and the rest of the freedom caucus opposed them, and the extremist democrat progressives opposed them, but they passed anyway. Such bills would actually have to be taken up and voted on in the senate and the legislative branch of the government would actually be functional for the first time in decades.

  26. Looks like Rex is going to war again. First it was his War on Gangs where he had thousands of pit bulls killed. That didn’t work. Gangs are all over Lancaster. Even Snoop Dogg knows that.

    Then it was the War on Section 8. All that did was cost the taxpayer several million dollars on account of rex’s big fat mouth.

    At the last Lancaster council meeting, Rex said that Lancaster would be ‘invaded’ by homeless from LA, sent here by Mayor Karen Bass.

    “I’m moving that we declare a state of emergency to counter the City of Los Angeles’ stated intent to invade our city with their homeless,” Parris said.

    It is true that Bass said in an interview that she would work with the county to create clinics for people with mental illness.

    “There’s a big chunk of land in Palmdale and maybe we could create a village out there,” the article quoted Bass as saying.

    She was referring to the land next to Plant 42 which is owned by LAWA. So as usual, rex and the gang found another scapegoat to blame for their failures on crime, graffiti, failed businesses, poor roads, and addressing the homeless problem. (Don’t forget the County gave Lancaster a million bucks for the homeless shelter. Rex accepted the money and then shut it down.)

    The article in the AV Press said: “Today, she directed them to look at all the land that they have and that they own, that they could start building, and they own thousands of acres in Palmdale,” Vice Mayor Marvin Crist said.
    In her mayoral campaign, Bass pledged to house 15,000 people by the end of her first year in office, end street encampments, dramatically reduce street homelessness and lead on mental health and substance abuse treatment, her website said.

    “She just announced the invasion,” Parris said at Tuesday’s meeting. “And that’s what it is, it’s an invasion.”
    Sigh. Oh rex. First it was 67 people a day being sent to Lancaster on the train from LA. That obviously was a lie because there would be more than 25,000 homeless people in Lancaster. Then they lowered the number to 18 or so a day. Still no. If Rex and his west side council would come out to the homeless encampments, they would learn that many of them are local, veterans, seniors, and didn’t get here on the train from LA. When you fail as much as Rex, you need a scapegoat.

      Republicans chose to celebrate the reduction of 1/2 of American’s (q.v., women’s) basic bodily autonomy as a victory, hard won in over 50 years of effort, but voters with a uterus sent them a clear message about what a huge mistake it was to waste time – 50 years – in trying to direct other people’s family formation decisions.
      When they campaigned in 2020, their platform was a single page primarily attacking media, promoting Drumpf and just ‘rolling over’ what they had published in the 2016 agenda.
      Lazy and resistant is no way to run a country.

          We cannot know the long term outcome in the state by state legislation, but I doubt it will go the way of conservative preference.

          People – women and men – are basically lazy and basically horny and so they are gonna do what they want and hope to institute whatever gets them to it faster, easier, even if it means they compromise some morals.

          • There is some accuracy in this. The SCOTUS took up the Roe v Wade case mostly because congress at the time was refusing to do their jobs and pass legislation addressing the issue so the US was turning into a hodgepodge of vastly divergent local laws (much as it is becoming now). There was some belief at the time that people would start electing responsible people to congress who would do their jobs. Instead the congress just took that as a sign that they could abdicate any and all responsibility and we have been governed by a combination of SCOTUS manipulation and executive order overreach for half a century instead.

            I suspect we will see this come to full flower starting in January. The House of Representatives may very well say “our first order of business is electing a speaker, and with a GOP majority we are incapable of doing that.” They might cause a constitutional crisis by completely failing to even exist as a legislative body.

When the Lancaster and Palmdale City Councils met together on May 18, 2021, to discuss projects and programs that the two cities could work together on, it appeared on the surface to be a 50/50 relationship in terms of splitting costs and receiving the benefits.     The list of current joint programs has been anything but even so far.
    According to a report in the Antelope Valley Press, the Palmdale City Council approved Mayor Pro Tem Richard Loa’s suggestion to spend $2.5 million in Palmdale’s unallocated ARPA funds to match the city of Lancaster’s $2.5 million for the Multi- Agency Regional Resiliency Center planned to be built for use in an emergency. The two cities agreed to finance, oversee and manage planning and studies necessary to open the new facility. That’s fine and dandy until you start asking questions: why is it being built in a location closer to Rosamond than East Palmdale? In an emergency, Palmdale residents need and deserve an emergency center closer to where they live. The $2.5 million could have been spent on facilities in Palmdale.

    Then there is the proposed “Wellness Center.” According to a story in the AV Press on June 19, both cities agreed to contribute $5 million for a wellness center to house a drug treatment program located in…you guessed it…Lancaster. Where in Lancaster will it be housed? Who owns the property? If you’re counting, it’s now $7.5 million dollars leaving Palmdale for facilities to be built in Lancaster, miles away from Palmdale residents.

    The AV Fair, held at the Fairgrounds in Lancaster, was a recipient of a $100K sponsorship by the City of Palmdale. While Palmdale residents could benefit from attending the fair, all the benefits from ticket, concession and concert sales went to …. drum roll please… Lancaster. We’re now up to $7.6 million.

    On a smaller scale, you have the fireworks shows. There have been two shows in Lancaster, and only one in Palmdale. Palmdale sent $60K for fireworks shows in Lancaster. What did Lancaster contribute to Palmdale’s show?

    Then there is the controversial EPIC power program that came to Palmdale by way of…you guessed it…Lancaster. EPIC is part of Cal Choice, which is led by executive director Jason Caudle, Lancaster City Manager, and the Board made up of Mayor R. Rex Parris and his City Council.     A deep dig into Lancaster’s budget reveals that 19 percent of Lancaster’s General Fund Revenue comes from CalChoice. (See page 18 (25 on the PDF) of this link:

    The two cities also agreed to work on a joint recreational complex in Palmdale. No funding was agreed upon, and PCF is unaware of any money that has come forth from Lancaster. Not a peep has been heard about this project for months. Is it quietly going away because it is in Palmdale?

    Lastly (for now), there are rumors swirling around Palmdale City Hall that Palmdale will be sending $50K to sponsor Lancaster’s Poppy Festival. Like the fair, while Palmdale residents can enjoy the event, all the financial benefit from ticket sales, food, beverages and fees will stay in Lancaster. $50K would go a long way in creating programs for Palmdale residents in their city.

    Why is Lancaster seemingly so desperate for Palmdale taxpayer money? Could the answer lie in the data on the State of California’s Local Government High Risk page? (Link: https://www.auditor.ca.gov/bsa/cities_risk_all ) Lancaster came in 229th out of 471 cities, with the higher the score, the better the fiscal condition. Two areas came up problematic for Lancaster: Pension Funding and OPEB (Other Post-Employment Benefits) Funding. Both were high risk. As a comparison, Palmdale came in at 405 out of 471, with no areas of high risk.

    Whatever the reason is, $7.6 million dollars is leaving Palmdale and going to Lancaster with the approval of the Palmdale City Council. Why are they ok with this? Working together is one thing but sending millions of dollars to a neighboring city when the money could be better spent in Palmdale is another.

    Think of it like this. We all have neighbors, right? No matter how well we get along with them, few of us, if any, are paying their mortgage or rent. Why are Palmdale taxpayers seeing their money go to their neighbors to the north?

    • This is ridiculous. We have a lot of needs in Palmdale and we’re sending millions to Lancaster? Good thing Hoffbauer is gone. Now it’s time to get rid of Loa and Biship, the other two Lancaster robots.

    So the Warnok campaign in Georgia is spending large money running a TV ad against Walker. They are just playing the clip of Donald Trump endorsing him. Nothing else. Political professionals have recognized that outside the dead heads of MAGAts there is no kiss of death deadlier than a Trump endorsement.

    That looks to be aging more like fine wine. Something that you probably don’t serve at Sonya’s MAGAt Dive. More the Thunderbird type of establishment I would guess.

    • It would be wise at this point to relax, offer no criticism, no retort, no observations about their varying tactics and possibilities. That only feeds them with sentiments they can lever or try to resolve in order to become popular or tolerable.
      Instead, allow the Republican party to decay from infighting and cannibalism among the MAGAts who are rupturing the bloated carcass of the swamp creature by eating it from within.
      It is a fulfillment of an old Soviet disinformation tactic, and a Sun Tzu strategy: set the divides the opponent by setting them against each other, then win the war by never lifting a weapon, watching them self destruct.

      So they follow simple rules, like “if a democrat votes for it, even if it is emergency disaster relief to my own district I oppose it. This gives me a chance to rant to the cameras on the capitol steps, and tweet out false nonsensical claims about the “secret pizza eating pedophile funding hidden in the proposal by blood consuming democrats that eat children.”

      If they face discipline in the house, like being stripped of committee assignments, so what? It gives them something else to rant to the cameras about, and more time to do it.

      Guaranteed, sometime before the end of February, the speaker will bring something to the floor certain that they have the votes, and someone like Bar Trash Boebert will unexpectedly vote no, or just not vote at all, or otherwise throw everything into chaos…just to bask in the headlines.

      No speaker, no matter how talented, can work with that.

    School boards across the country who were being frequently threatened and sometimes outright attacked by right wingers asked the Justice Department if there was anything they could do about it, and the DoJ responded. The incoming chair of the judiciary committee announced that he would be investigating why the DoJ would have time for answering such questions. Jordan, best known in his home state of Ohio for turning a blind eye to sex offenders, stated privately: “If good republicans had been in charge of DoJ they would have been too busy watching porn on Hunter Biden’s laptop to be bothered with questions from constituents. We have to get to the bottom of this doing of their jobs.”

    • If Garland gets around to the 1/6 issue, will he subpoena Jim Jordan who was talking to Trump that day?

      If you ever saw Jordan trying to answer that question while stammering and stuttering, it should be fun watching him testify under oath.

    What if the Democrats nominate Rep. Jeffries for Speaker of the House and a few sane Republicans also join in while the Freedom Caucus led crazies don’t have the 218 votes, I’d love to see the rabid Jim Jordan foaming at the mouth.

    At this point, anything is possible in DC.

    • Too much to hope for. Even sane republicans can’t afford to vote for a democrat when they have the majority, no matter how thin. What I would like to see the democrats do is nominate a sane republican, then let their members vote present. If they nominate David Joyce of Ohio, who has a long tenure and well established moderate leadership, there would be republicans that vote for him. Once the GOP fails to put 218 together for McCarthy, Joyce could be positioned as a compromise candidate that could freeze out the nutbar wing of the GOP by getting support from moderate democrats.

        Bill Clinton had upwards of 65% or higher job approval during his impeachment so the same might happen with Biden if the Republicans bite off too much, too soon, too often which is their inclination. They never learn that it backfires on them.

      As of Tuesday, there have been just a bit more than 120,000 votes counted.
      In the 2020 election, the total vote count was 338.943. That represents about 45% of all eligible voters.
      The margin then was a 0.0982% difference – a mere 333 votes.
      In this election there are issues like women’s rights that are anticipated to stimulate higher participation, greater than the 338,943 in the last election.
      So, uh, declaring victory is a bit premature when only 1/3 of the vote has been counted.

    Florida Man Knows How to Vote – and Count
    Complicated, untrustworthy elections lead the population to a more psychologically fragile place, far more easily manipulated and controlled

    Rather often, when one sees the word “Florida” in a headline one can expect a story about a shirtless drunken man who was hauled out by cops from underneath a trailer while his meth addled paramour stood on the stoop screaming about the python in the bathtub she may or may not be hallucinating.

    Stories about California, however, tend to focus on the wonders of a progressive high-tech green paradise at the cutting edge of the planetary zeitgeist.

    How, then, is Florida Man so incredibly good at counting votes quickly and accurately while California Man is sooooo incredibly bad at it?

    Let’s find out –

    This is how you vote in Florida:

    You register and if you want an absentee ballot – anyone can get one – you ask for it at least 10 days before the election and it must be returned – not postmarked by – election day. If you want, you can drop it off at one of the many, many early voting sites (which is where, as the name implies, anyone can go to vote earlier than election day.)

    If you can’t quite make it to the post office to drop off your ballot, someone else can do it for you provided you follow the rules:

    “You may designate someone to pick up your vote-by-mail ballot on Election Day or 9 days before Election Day. The designee may only pick up 2 vote-by-mail ballots per election, other than his or her own ballot or ballots for members of his or her immediate family. Designees must have written authorization from the voter, present a picture I.D. and sign an affidavit. Candidates may pick up vote-by-mail ballots only for members of their immediate family.”

    As for day-of voting, Florida uses a paper ballot system – fill in the ovals – for everyone unless they are disabled and feel more comfortable using an electronic console.

    Oh, and every vote requires valid identification documents and signatures that match those on file.

    This is how the ballots are counted in Florida:

    The day-of ballots are run through tabulating machines that have been thrice-checked in the month leading up to the election, including on the day of the election. Every ballot (even the electronics produce a paper trail) is kept secure in case of a recount. Double-password protected files/drives are then used to secure the tabulation results which are then sent to the Secretary of State’s office (additional verification is required during this process.)

    As to the mail-in ballots, they are opened and verified the day they are received and can be counted prior to election day as long as the machines being used have been, again, thrice-tested by a licensed inspector.

    This is how you vote in California:

    Everyone gets a ballot in the mail, and by that I mean everyone, dead or alive, moved out of state or not, etc. Then you can fill it out whenever or someone can “help” you – and everyone else in the nursing home or at the shelter or on the streetcorner or wherever – fill it out and drop it in a questionably-secured “official” box which may or may not have lots and lots of “found” ballots in it as well. Or you can wait until election day and vote in person – pretty much anywhere using a provisional ballot – and you do not have to show identification. And maybe eventually someone will check if you already voted by mail, or somewhere else.

    And this is how ballots are counted in California:

    • I tried to show my ID when I showed up to vote with a provisional ballot, and the election poll worker sitting at the table held up her hands, turned her face away, and said, in dismay, “Oh, no, no, no!” As if I had done something truly wrong and terrible.

      After I’d cast my vote and went to press the button for it to be recorded, I hesitated and looked over my shoulder, and an election poll worker was looking over my shoulder. I quickly stepped in front of him to block his view, saying, “do you mind?” and would not let him press any buttons or give me any instructions after that. “I am more than capable of figuring this out on my own,” I said. To which he responded, “Tsk.”

      I laughed and said, “Boomer!”

      The outcome is the same whether it’s reported the next day or a month from the election or if the cities are counted first and the rural counties last or vice versa. It’s all the same.

      That is unless the ruse thinks that the newly elected office holder takes the oath on November 9.

      Please don’t use Florida as an example as they’ve done some things that are quetionable and after the 2000 election they have no bragging rights. I still don’t trust an election with Desantis as governor and Cord Byrd as SoS, both REPUBLICANS. Remember Katherine Harris in 2000?

      Does anyone trust elections in Lancaster with Parris and the politically active church?
      Yeah, I didn’t think so.

  74. So with the democrats retaining control of the senate all eyes turn to the house, where we are maybe looking forward to a spectacular event with cataclysmic consequences for the Republican party.

    For this conversation let’s just assume that all the remaining undecided races wind up going to the current leaders. That gives the GOP a seven seat majority, 221-214. To be elected speaker McCarthy needs 218 votes. Since it only takes four there may very well be enough extremists in the mix who will stand on “McCarthy isn’t crazy enough” and refuse to vote for him, putting him out in the same pasture that John Boehner was dispatched to by the crazies of the ‘freedom caucus.’ At the same time, anyone who IS crazy enough for the extremists is likely to lose more than four votes from republicans who actually care about the country.

    So what happens if there is NO republican who can carry 218 out of the 221 republicans? Then the republicans have to choose someone who can get crossover votes from the democrats…more crossover votes than they lose by appealing to democrats. This would actually be GREAT for the country, but I’m not sure that such a republican exists in the house at this point. It certainly isn’t McCarthy, who would recognize that his district is full of crazies who would flip right out if he made such a compromise.

    Now we have seen a fortune accumulated not through merit, but through lawless abuse of the tax codes to gain competitive advantage, used to launch the career of the most lawless president the country has ever seen. Given his inherited position as head of a crime family can we claim to be surprised at the outcome with Donald Trump?

    What has brought this to mind though isn’t national, it’s local. I know people, good hard working honest people, who lost their businesses during the pandemic. Some of my favorite places closed down, and I am sure you can point to some of your own as well. I’m not here to argue about whether the shutdowns “were necessary.” I’m not here to argue over whether “masking requirements” actually did or did not reduce the impact of the pandemic. You probably know my perspective on that and that I think data is available to conclusively make the point, but that’s not the issue right now.

    The issue is that people who did their honest best, who said “hey I am a restaurant owner, not a doctor” and followed the law; those people were put out of business and are facing stiff challenges trying to get back in business because people who used their own willingness to break the law to gain competitive advantage are still being rewarded. I was in prison with a lot of drug dealers. They often thought of themselves as “sharp businessmen.” They also almost all stood on “I only sold what people wanted, and it shouldn’t have been illegal in the first place.” I used to point out frequently that if drugs weren’t illegal they would not be in prison, but they would also probably never have been any kind of successful; you don’t make the money they made by selling turnips.

    We see the same thing happening now. Some businesses are thriving, riding the afterglow of their total lawlessness during the pandemic. You can see it in their reviews, where customers commend them for “and I didn’t have to wear a mask!” in reviews from dead center of the lockdowns. Some even shouted their own lawbreaking into the great void of the internet, seeking to build a customer base out of those who did not care what public health officials might advise.

    Of course these barkeeps and brothel operators never really cared one way or another whether the officials were right or wrong. They are still standing on “they were wrong” no matter what evidence may or may not develop, because they looked at the law as something to break for competitive advantage, not something that may or may not have served some public good. These are the ‘success stories’ asking for your continued business and support.

    I think we should, all of us, examine the businesses that thrived through the pandemic and decide if we really want to reward their lawlessness…whether we personally believe the laws were effective or not, whether we personally believe they were appropriate or not, they were the law. I am routinely attacked for breaking the law last century, do the people who attack me want to support people who were feathering their nests by breaking the law last year?

In this case, DHS was instructed that the only domestic terror threat they were supposed to be looking for was the non-existent “central Antifa terrorist organizers and funding operation.” Factual information telling us that didn’t exist? Trump appointed leadership didn’t want to hear it. Information on the growing danger of right wing extremist groups that ultimately lead to the attack on the capitol? Trump appointed leadership did not want to hear it. Plain truths that publicly accusing protesters when there was no evidence to connect them to Trump’s imaginary “terrorist organization” and using DHS personnel to then round them up was a gross violation of their rights? Yeah, Trump appointed leadership DEFINITELY was not gonna hear that. ALL that they were going to listen to was stuff that supported Trump’s wildly imaginative campaign speeches, and anyone that didn’t have anything that would do that better make something up before they got fired.

    Two, it provides an example of what a previously classified document looks like when it has been declassified. It was never really highly classified, but still effective for showing that even though a president can ORDER something declassified if the random whim strikes him, there is still a process involved.

  100. So here’s a funny story of how a guy can think he is getting away with something and have it turn south…

    Timothy Shea was part of the same fraud scheme with Steve Bannon et al, getting gullible MAGAts to give them money to “build the wall” that they actually spent on luxuries for themselves. Most of the conspirators plead guilty, Bannon was convicted and sentenced to prison, but Shea “won” when a MAGAt on the jury said that no amount of evidence would ever make her find a fellow MAGAt guilty. So Shea got a hung jury and “went free.”

    Free to face a new trial, which is currently going on and is considered to be open and shut, so Shea will be going to prison. And unlike Bannon, who bought a pardon from Trump, Shea has no way out. Thanks for subverting justice there MAGAt that tainted the original jury. If not for you Shea would have bought a pardon as well and done no time for his crime.

  104. For those considering the move to a “red state paradise,” this is what you get when republicans write laws:

    In a recent case in Missouri the court and law enforcement agreed that no crimes were committed. A fight broke out between two men at a gas station. Both, ‘fearing for their lives’ resorted to deadly force with no attempt to disengage, as allowed by Missouri law. One had a gun, but lost it, and the other applied a choke hold. Fearing what would happen if he let go, reasonably enough, this guy apparently intended to choke the other guy to death, which would be legal.

    However, a woman recovered the lost gun, and after much screaming and demanding that the guy release his hold she recognized the ‘immanent danger of loss of life’ and shot the would be killer to death, as any citizen Samaritan is allowed to do, in accordance with Missouri law. This also was not a crime.

    So, let’s look at some added possibilities. What if someone turning into the gas station saw her pointing the gun and screaming, recognized that loss of life was immanent, and ran her over with their car? This too would be clearly legal under Missouri law.

    What if she saw the car coming and defended herself with a spray of bullets to the windshield, killing the driver? No crime there. She’s not even required to try to step out of the way. If the car then plowed through a gas pump setting the entire place ablaze and killing EVERYONE involved, along with bystanders, people in the gas station that had no idea anything was happening…whoever…that’s just how it goes.

    The Republicans of the Missouri state legislature has come up with the counterpoint to victimless crime, they have created crimeless victims.

        • Parking lots were at least 3/4 empty. I saw the light turn red at M from somewhere around M-12, and I pulled up at the light without a car in front of me. There were people at the Italian place; I know that place, it was popular with the car business people back when I sold cars. One person going into some sort of deli as I went by. The knickknack places were dead and stinking, which is why one of their owners is posting on social media about how slow it is. As I said, there was a pretty good crowd at the thrift shop; they had stuff out front.

          Time of day makes a difference of course. Your place may have been closed so you may not be aware of the lack of traffic at the time I was there.

      • It was Thursday. One of the local business owners off Ave M put out a plea for people to come by on another platform since things are so slow, so I went to check it out. Same basic mix of businesses as you’d find along Pearblossom Highway without the benefit of the highway traffic. I guess you might get some people passing through to the shopping center at Avenue N, but it’s easy to see how you two have so much time on your hands.

        It struck me as strange, since other small retail areas I frequent seem to have recovered to pre-covid traffic levels. I guess the loyal Trumpists of Quartz Hill are too busy convincing themselves of economic woe to get out and shop.

  115. So another member of the Proud Boys pleads guilty, this time to seditious conspiracy. Obviously the dude that plead to lesser charges in April got the better, one time, offer. Pro tip for the five clowns currently on trial: when two members of your conspiracy have plead guilty to conspiring with you it is time to cut your losses and make a deal, every man for himself. The guy who is ‘last man standing’ in that courtroom is going to get no deal at all.

    • I’ve been thinking about this on and off, and there is a procedural point that comes up that I have never seen resolved.

      A defendant who has plead not guilty has the right to change their plea at any point in the process before a verdict is read. People do that because if the case is strong against them they may get a more lenient sentence by “taking responsibility.”

      But in a multiple defendant conspiracy charge case it seems like one or more defendants changing their plea to guilty, and possibly then even testifying against their former co-defendants in front of the same jury, would be hugely prejudicial and deny the other defendants their rights.

      Anyone have any experience with this, or have a reference case where it happened?
