LANCASTER – A suspected drunk driver was arrested Sunday after a fatal hit-and-run crash involving a motorcyclist in Lancaster, authorities said.
The collision happened around 12:27 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 27, on Avenue I and 13th Street West, according to a news release from the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station.
“Preliminary investigation indicates a male adult in a BMW sedan was traveling eastbound on Avenue I and made a left turn at 13th Street West, in the path of a motorcyclist who was westbound on Avenue I,” the news release states.
Both vehicles collided and the motorcyclist was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released pending next kin of notification.
“The driver of the BMW fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended by deputies… The driver of the BMW was determined to have been driving under the influence of alcohol and arrested for vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, felony hit and run, and DUI causing bodily injury,” the sheriff’s news release states.
According to a source at the scene, the suspect left his car locked and deputies had to break out the car’s windows to make sure there was no one inside. The driver was subsequently found hiding in the bushes, the source said. The suspect’s name was not immediately released.
